STORYLINE:
Angry residents of Nairobi's Mathare shanty town hurled stones at police who fired tear gas and gunshots on a second day of opposition protests on Thursday.
Residents hid indoors and crouched on the floors of shops as young men ran past, and police fired tear gas down alleyways and gunshots into the air.
One
Red Cross medic said his ambulance picked up a 24-year-old with deep machete cuts to his head and neck and a fractured arm. The medic asked not to be named because he was not authorised to speak to the press.
Police also fired tear gas in downtown Nairobi at dozens of protesters, some of whom threw stones.
"I think Kibaki has instructed his police to fire at us. We have been tear gassed just now, we are continuing," a leader from the opposition Orange Democratic Movement told AP
Television.
"They are harassing people everywhere, Why? Why are this? This is our right. They have stolen our votes, they have bribed the Electoral Commission, yes, and now they (inaudible) and they want to fire at us, we are ready to die," said Najib Balala.
AP Television also filmed residents of the Kibera area of Nairobi running as police fired warning shots and tear gas shells towards them, on Thursday.
The unrest comes after a call by opposition leader,
Raila Odinga, for three days of demonstrations that began on Wednesday.
But turnout across the country has been low and there were few of the serious clashes and home burnings that characterised protests immediately after results from the disputed
27 December election were announced.
Riots and ethnic killings in the wake of the disputed vote have marred
Kenya's image as a stable democratic oasis in a war-ravaged region and damaged its tourist-dependent economy.
