The Geheime Staatspolizei (German for Secret State Police, abbreviated "Gestapo") was the secret police of Nazi Germany, and its main tool of oppression and destruction, which persecuted Germans, opponents of the regime, and Jews. It later played a central role in helping carry out the Nazi's "Final Solution."
The Gestapo was formally organized after the Nazis seized power in 1933. Hermann Göring, the Prussian minister of the interior, detached the espionage and political units of the Prussian police and proceeded to staff them with thousands of Nazis. On April 26, 1933, Göring became the commander of this new force that was given power to shadow, arrest, interrogate, and intern any "enemies" of the state. At the same time that Goring was organzing the Gestapo, Heinrich Himmler was directing the SS (Schutzstaffel, German for "Protective Echelon"), Hitler's elite paramilitary corps. In April 1936, he was given command of the Gestapo as well, integrating all of Germany's police units under Himmler.

Institutions and organizations were warped to serve this purpose, none more than the police. At first, it was the Storm Troopers of the SA, who beat, intimidated, and killed those who opposed the regime. But something more was needed than simple thuggery and the police were co-opted. The Gestapo, the Secret State Police, was the organization set up to perform this function. By reputation its network of black-clad officers spread everywhere; yet it was a small organization--at its height in 1941 there were only 8,000 officers. Program 1 shows the power struggle between the worst of Hitlers henchmen, Himmler and Heydrich on the one hand, and Göring on the other. And it introduces us to a mysterious figure, Heinrich Müller, a career policeman who became the ice-cold leader of the Gestapo."

Am 30. Januar 1933 übernimmt Hitler in Deutschland die Macht, und sofort beginnt die Einschüchterung und Ausschaltung jeglicher Opposition. Da die Polizei dafür noch nicht voll in Anspruch genommen werden kann, bringt Hitler seine paramilitärischen Truppen zum Einsatz. Unter dem Befehl von Ernst Röhm überzieht die "Sturmabteilung" (SA) der NSDAP das Land mit brutalem, "wilden" Terror. Im Visier der als "Hilfspolizei" eingesetzten Schläger sind vor allem Kommunisten, Sozialdemokraten und Gewerkschafter; aber auch die deutschen Juden trifft von Anfang ihr Terror.
Aber der offene Terror der SA verschreckt auch manche Anhänger des neuen Regimes. Hitler befiehlt die Einstellung der "wilden" SA-Aktionen. Die reguläre Polizei soll wieder für Ruhe und Ordnung sorgen - nun allerdings unter nationalsozialistischer Führung. Die Polizei soll zum Machtinstrument des NS-Regimes werden. Das gilt vor allem für die politische Polizei des "Dritten Reiches": die Gestapo.
Im Mai 1933 bezieht die Gestapo ihr Dienstgebäude in der Prinz- Albrecht-Straße 8 in Berlin. Noch ist sie nur für Preußen zuständig, noch ist sie Objekt im Machtkampf der Nazi-Größen. Heinrich Himmler, Reichsführer SS, setzt sich schließlich durch. Im Frühjahr 1934 übernimmt er zusammen mit Reinhard Heydrich die Gestapo im gesamten Reich. Die erste Bewährungsprobe der neuen Formation: Die Ermordung von SA-Chef Ernst Röhm - auf Geheiß Hitlers. Röhm, der aus der SA eine "Volksmiliz" machen will, steht Hitler im Weg. Der von Gestapo und SS geplanten Mordaktion fallen Ende Juni 1934 etwa 90 Menschen zum Opfer.
Mit der Erstellung eines reichsweiten Karteisystems zur Erfassung von "Gegnern", der Ernennung Himmlers zum Chef der gesamten deutschen Polizei (1936) und der unaufhaltsamen Kompetenzerweiterung wird die Gestapo zur schärfsten Waffe Hitlers. Die Gestapo verhaftet willkürlich und exzessiv. Die in "Schutzhaft" genommenen Opfer werden in Konzentrationslager verschleppt. Ihnen wird jeder Rechtsbeistand verweigert.
Zeitzeugen schildern eindringlich die mitleidslosen Methoden der Gestapoarbeit. So zum Beispiel Johann Schwert aus Frankfurt/Main, damals im kommunistischen Widerstand. Er wird verhaftet, gefoltert und muss viele Jahre in Einzelhaft verbringen. Erst 1945 kommt er frei. Nach 1935 überwacht die Geheime Staatspolizei auch die Einhaltung der "Nürnberger Rassegesetze", und sie ist im Verlauf des mörderischen Pogroms von 1938 auch dafür verantwortlich, dass tausende männliche Juden verhaftet und in Konzentrationslager verschleppt werden.
Die wachsende Bereitschaft der Bevölkerung zur Denunziation erleichtert der Gestapo den Terror. Josef Niklasch, damals bei den Zeugen Jehovas, und Marie-Luise Schulze-Jahn, damals im studentischen Widerstand, berichten von konkreten Fällen, in denen Hinweise aus der Bevölkerung zur Verhaftung durch die Gestapo führten. Auch bei der Durchsetzung von Hitlers Expansionspolitik spielt die Gestapo eine wichtige Rolle. Ihre Aufgabe ist es, die polizeiliche Macht in den besetzten Gebieten zu übernehmen und jeden Widerstand zu unterdrücken. Sie wird sich aber auch maßgeblich am Völkermord an den europäischen Juden beteiligen.

Gestapo używało stopni Sipo, aby zasugerować ludności cywilnej przynależność do policji. Czarne mundury były używane przez całą wojnę jako mundury galowe. Na co dzień funkcjonariusze Gestapo używali szarych mundurów SS oraz mundurów policyjnych SS z wykładanym kołnierzem, koszulą i czarnym krawatem.
Wszyscy funkcjonariusze Gestapo nosili na lewym rękawie romby z inicjałami SD, gdyż to właśnie SD sprawowała kierowniczą rolę w całej RSHA, a szefami pionów Gestapo zawsze byli oficerowie SD. Gestapo było w praktyce jedynie egzekutywą w rękach SD i wykonywała wszystkie jej wytyczne. Choć cele obu pionów w wielu dziedzinach się pokrywały (bądź dublowały), to jednak siłą sprawczą całego aparatu RSHA była właśnie SD.

Fondée en Prusse par Hermann Göring, son pouvoir s'étendit ensuite, sous l'impulsion d'Heinrich Himmler, à l'ensemble du Reich, puis aux territoires envahis par l'Allemagne au cours de la Seconde Guerre mondiale. Intégrée au Reichssicherheitshauptamt de Reinhard Heydrich, elle fut dirigée par Heinrich Müller de 1934 à 1945. Chargée de lutter contre les opposants internes ou externes, réels ou supposés, puis contre les adversaires du régime nazi ou les résistants dans les pays occupés, elle fut synonyme de terreur et d'arbitraire en Allemagne, puis dans une grande partie de l'Europe. Cette police d'état secrète fut une arme redoutablement efficace dans les mains du pouvoir nazi. C'est elle qui exécuta le monstrueux programme de la solution finale au"problème juif" , des rafles à l'organisation des camps d'extermination. Systématiquement la Gestapo pratiquait la torture selon des méthodes identiques dans tous les pays tombés sous le joug hitlérien.

1939 sorgt die Gestapo für einen Vorwand zum Angriff auf Polen. Heinrich Müller, ein erfahrener Kriminalbeamter, inszeniert einen angeblichen Überfall polnischer Soldaten auf den deutschen Rundfunksender Gleiwitz. Wenig später wird aus Heinrich Müller "Gestapo-Müller", der neue Chef der Gestapo.
Die Gestapo gehört nun zum "Reichssicherheitshauptamt" (RSHA, seit 1939), in dem unter Leitung von Reinhard Heydrich die Kriminalpolizei, der Sicherheitsdienst der SS (SD) und die Gestapo zusammengefasst werden. Das RSHA wird zur Zentrale des Terrors.
Mit Hitlers Angriffskriegen weitet die Gestapo ihren Machtanspruch auf ganz Europa aus. Ob in Prag, Kopenhagen, Amsterdam, Paris oder in den polnischen Ghettos - überall entwickelt die Gestapo mörderische Aktivitäten. Es wird erfasst, gefoltert, getötet. Auch die so genannten "Einsatzgruppen" - Mordkommandos, die im Osten wüten - werden in großem Umfang aus Kräften der Polizei rekrutiert.
Das Reichssicherheitshauptamt übernimmt auch die organisatorische Federführung bei der Deportation und Ermordung der europäischen Juden. Zuständig ist eine eigene Abteilung, unter der Leitung von Adolf Eichmann - mit direktem Draht zu Gestapochef Heinrich Müller. Am Beispiel der Stadt Würzburg dokumentiert der Film, wie sich die Gestapo am Völkermord beteiligte. In Würzburg ist neben schriftlichen Dokumenten eine einzigartige Fotosammlung überliefert, die in erschütternden Bildern der Abtransport von 852 mainfränkischen Juden in die Vernichtungslager zeigt. Ein Mitarbeiter der Gestapostelle Würzburg, der Kriminaloberassistent Oswald Gundelach, begleitet den Transport bis nach Lublin. Nach dem Krieg behauptet Gundelach, er habe lediglich "Arbeiten verrichtet, die vor 1933 und nach 1945 zu den dienstlichen Obliegenheiten der Polizei gehörten."
In Frankreich bereitet der ehemaligen Leiter der Gestapostelle Köln, Kurt Lischka, die Deportation tausender Juden vor. Dabei helfen lokale Behörden und Informanten. Vom Sammellager Drancy aus werden mehr als 65.000 Juden deportiert, die meisten nach Auschwitz. Kurt Lischka baut die Gestapozentrale in Paris zu einer effektiven Terrorbehörde aus, die auch alle Widerstandsgruppen gnadenlos verfolgt. Peter Gingold, damals als Deutscher Mitglied der Résistance, erzählt, wie er in die Fänge der Gestapo geriet und nur mit knapper Not entkommen konnte. Nach dem Krieg taucht Kurt Lischka unter. Erst als sich Serge und Beate Klarsfeld an seine Spur heften, wird er enttarnt und später zu einer mehrjährigen Haftstrafe verurteilt. Im Osten beginnt im März 1942 die so genannte "Aktion Reinhard" - Kennwort für die Ermordung von über 2 Millionen Juden in Polen. Ein Spezialauftrag von Heinrich Himmler. Angehörige der Gestapo, des SD, der Kriminal- und Ordnungspolizei töten zehntausende unschuldiger Menschen. Zitate aus Briefen und Tagebuchaufzeichnungen von beteiligten Polizisten dokumentieren die völlige Mitleidlosigkeit der Täter: Polizisten sind zu Massenmörder geworden.

This gave him command of the largest police force in Germany. Soon afterward, Göring detached the political and intelligence sections from the police and filled their ranks with Nazis. On 26 April 1933, Göring merged the two units as the Gestapo. He originally wanted to name it the Secret Police Office (German: Geheimes Polizeiamt), but discovered the German initials "GPA" would be too similar to the Soviet GPU.

War Machine (James Rupert Rhodes) is a fictional character, a comic book superhero appearing in comic books set in the Marvel Comics universe. The character of James Rhodes first appeared in Iron Man #118 (January 1979) by David Michelinie, John Byrne and Bob Layton. The War Machine armor, which became Rhodes' signature armored battlesuit, was designed by Len Kaminski and Kevin Hopgood.
Also known by his nickname Rhodey, Rhodes has been a featured character in the Iron Man animated series, Iron Man: Armored Adventures and The Invincible Iron Man animated film. He was first portrayed by actor Terrence Howard in the 2008 film Iron Man. Don Cheadle replaced Howard in the 2010 sequel Iron Man 2 and will reprise the role in Iron Man 3.
In addition to Iron Man and his own title War Machine, Rhodes has been featured in the ensemble titles West Coast Avengers; Force Works by Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning; Sentinel Squad O*N*E; The Crew by Christopher Priest; and Avengers: The Initiative by Dan Slott and Christos Gage. Rhodes was also featured in the alternate-reality Marvel MAX imprint's U.S. War Machine series by Chuck Austen, and U.S. War Machine 2.0, by Austen and Christian Moore.

Das gilt vor allem für die politische Polizei des "Dritten Reiches": die Gestapo. Im Mai 1933 bezieht die Gestapo ihr Dienstgebäude in der Prinz- Albrecht-Straße 8 in Berlin. Noch ist sie nur für Preußen zuständig, noch ist sie Objekt im Machtkampf der Nazi-Größen. Heinrich Himmler, Reichsführer SS, setzt sich schließlich durch. Im Frühjahr 1934 übernimmt er zusammen mit Reinhard Heydrich die Gestapo im gesamten Reich. Die erste Bewährungsprobe der neuen Formation: Die Ermordung von SA-Chef Ernst Röhm - auf Geheiß Hitlers. Röhm, der aus der SA eine "Volksmiliz" machen will, steht Hitler im Weg. Der von Gestapo und SS geplanten Mordaktion fallen Ende Juni 1934 etwa 90 Menschen zum Opfer. Mit der Erstellung eines reichsweiten Karteisystems zur Erfassung von "Gegnern", der Ernennung Himmlers zum Chef der gesamten deutschen Polizei (1936) und der unaufhaltsamen Kompetenzerweiterung wird die Gestapo zur schärfsten Waffe Hitlers. Die Gestapo verhaftet willkürlich und exzessiv. Die in "Schutzhaft" genommenen Opfer werden in Konzentrationslager verschleppt. Ihnen wird jeder Rechtsbeistand verweigert. Zeitzeugen schildern eindringlich die mitleidslosen Methoden der Gestapoarbeit. So zum Beispiel Johann Schwert aus Frankfurt/Main, damals im kommunistischen Widerstand. Er wird verhaftet, gefoltert und muss viele Jahre in Einzelhaft verbringen. Erst 1945 kommt er frei. Nach 1935 überwacht die Geheime Staatspolizei auch die Einhaltung der "Nürnberger Rassegesetze", und sie ist im Verlauf des mörderischen Pogroms von 1938 auch dafür verantwortlich, dass tausende männliche Juden verhaftet und in Konzentrationslager verschleppt werden. Die wachsende Bereitschaft der Bevölkerung zur Denunziation erleichtert der Gestapo den Terror. Josef Niklasch, damals bei den Zeugen Jehovas, und Marie-Luise Schulze-Jahn, damals im studentischen Widerstand, berichten von konkreten Fällen, in denen Hinweise aus der Bevölkerung zur Verhaftung durch die Gestapo führten. Auch bei der Durchsetzung von Hitlers Expansionspolitik spielt die Gestapo eine wichtige Rolle. Ihre Aufgabe ist es, die polizeiliche Macht in den besetzten Gebieten zu übernehmen und jeden Widerstand zu unterdrücken. Sie wird sich aber auch maßgeblich am Völkermord an den europäischen Juden beteiligen. -

Gestapo używało stopni Sipo, aby zasugerować ludności cywilnej przynależność do policji. Czarne mundury były używane przez całą wojnę jako mundury galowe. Na co dzień funkcjonariusze Gestapo używali szarych mundurów SS oraz mundurów policyjnych SS z wykładanym kołnierzem, koszulą i czarnym krawatem. Wszyscy funkcjonariusze Gestapo nosili na lewym rękawie romby z inicjałami SD, gdyż to właśnie SD sprawowała kierowniczą rolę w całej RSHA, a szefami pionów Gestapo zawsze byli oficerowie SD. Gestapo było w praktyce jedynie egzekutywą w rękach SD i wykonywała wszystkie jej wytyczne. Choć cele obu pionów w wielu dziedzinach się pokrywały (bądź dublowały), to jednak siłą sprawczą całego aparatu RSHA była właśnie SD. -

1939 sorgt die Gestapo für einen Vorwand zum Angriff auf Polen. Heinrich Müller, ein erfahrener Kriminalbeamter, inszeniert einen angeblichen Überfall polnischer Soldaten auf den deutschen Rundfunksender Gleiwitz. Wenig später wird aus Heinrich Müller "Gestapo-Müller", der neue Chef der Gestapo. Die Gestapo gehört nun zum "Reichssicherheitshauptamt" (RSHA, seit 1939), in dem unter Leitung von Reinhard Heydrich die Kriminalpolizei, der Sicherheitsdienst der SS (SD) und die Gestapo zusammengefasst werden. Das RSHA wird zur Zentrale des Terrors. Mit Hitlers Angriffskriegen weitet die Gestapo ihren Machtanspruch auf ganz Europa aus. Ob in Prag, Kopenhagen, Amsterdam, Paris oder in den polnischen Ghettos - überall entwickelt die Gestapo mörderische Aktivitäten. Es wird erfasst, gefoltert, getötet. Auch die so genannten "Einsatzgruppen" - Mordkommandos, die im Osten wüten - werden in großem Umfang aus Kräften der Polizei rekrutiert. Das Reichssicherheitshauptamt übernimmt auch die organisatorische Federführung bei der Deportation und Ermordung der europäischen Juden. Zuständig ist eine eigene Abteilung, unter der Leitung von Adolf Eichmann - mit direktem Draht zu Gestapochef Heinrich Müller. Am Beispiel der Stadt Würzburg dokumentiert der Film, wie sich die Gestapo am Völkermord beteiligte. In Würzburg ist neben schriftlichen Dokumenten eine einzigartige Fotosammlung überliefert, die in erschütternden Bildern der Abtransport von 852 mainfränkischen Juden in die Vernichtungslager zeigt. Ein Mitarbeiter der Gestapostelle Würzburg, der Kriminaloberassistent Oswald Gundelach, begleitet den Transport bis nach Lublin. Nach dem Krieg behauptet Gundelach, er habe lediglich "Arbeiten verrichtet, die vor 1933 und nach 1945 zu den dienstlichen Obliegenheiten der Polizei gehörten." In Frankreich bereitet der ehemaligen Leiter der Gestapostelle Köln, Kurt Lischka, die Deportation tausender Juden vor. Dabei helfen lokale Behörden und Informanten. Vom Sammellager Drancy aus werden mehr als 65.000 Juden deportiert, die meisten nach Auschwitz. Kurt Lischka baut die Gestapozentrale in Paris zu einer effektiven Terrorbehörde aus, die auch alle Widerstandsgruppen gnadenlos verfolgt. Peter Gingold, damals als Deutscher Mitglied der Résistance, erzählt, wie er in die Fänge der Gestapo geriet und nur mit knapper Not entkommen konnte. Nach dem Krieg taucht Kurt Lischka unter. Erst als sich Serge und Beate Klarsfeld an seine Spur heften, wird er enttarnt und später zu einer mehrjährigen Haftstrafe verurteilt. Im Osten beginnt im März 1942 die so genannte "Aktion Reinhard" - Kennwort für die Ermordung von über 2 Millionen Juden in Polen. Ein Spezialauftrag von Heinrich Himmler. Angehörige der Gestapo, des SD, der Kriminal- und Ordnungspolizei töten zehntausende unschuldiger Menschen. A Gestapo foi criada em 26 de abril de 1933, na Prússia, a partir da Polícia Secreta Prussiana. No início, era apenas um ramo da polícia prussiana, conhecida como "Departamente 1A da Policial do Estado Prussiano". Seu primeiro comandante foi Rudolf Diels, que recrutou membros de departamentos policiais profissionais e fez com que ela funcionasse como uma Polícia federal, semelhante ao FBI dos EUA. O papel da Gestapo como polícia política só foi estabelecido quando Hermann Göring foi designado para suceder Diels como comandante, 1934. In den letzten Kriegsmonaten ist der Gewaltapparat der Gestapo weitgehend auf das "Altreich" zurückgedrängt. Die Gestapo bekommt eine neue Aufgabe: Sie soll dafür sorgen, dass die Heimatfront hält - um jeden Preis. "Abweichler", Kritiker und Gegner des Regimes sollen "ausgeschaltet" werden. Schon kleinste Vergehen werden hart bestraft. Als Zeitzeugin berichtet Eva Rössner wie ihr Großvater wegen Hören eines "Feindsenders" mit zweieinhalb Jahren Zuchthaus bestraft wurde. Der Jazzmusiker Emil Mangelsdorff und die Zeitzeugen Wolfgang Lauinger und Franz Kremer erzählen, wie sie als so genannte Swingjugend von der Gestapo verfolgt, verhaftet und gefoltert wurden. Ihr Vergehen: Sie hatten verbotene Jazz-Musik gehört. Ins Visier der Gestapo geraten jetzt auch noch jene wenigen Juden, die mit einem nichtjüdischen Partner in so genannter Mischehe leben. Zum Beispiel Clara Greding aus Frankfurt. Ihre Töchter erzählen, wie ihre Mutter in die Lindenstraße 27 bestellt wurde, Sitz der Gestapozentrale in Frankfurt. Hier herrscht Heinrich Baab. Laut späterer Zeugenaussagen soll er sich damit gebrüstet haben, 387 Frauen vernichtet und ausgelöscht zu haben. Baab lässt Clara Greding im Januar 1944 nach Auschwitz deportieren. Dort wird sie ermordet. Heinrich Baab wird nach dem Krieg zu einer lebenslangen Haftstrafe verurteilt - eine Ausnahme, viele seiner Gestapokollegen kommen straffrei davon. In den Millionen im Reich lebenden Zwangsarbeitern sieht die Gestapo seit 1943 ein wachsendes Sicherheitsproblem. Deshalb werden sie misstrauisch überwacht und beim kleinsten Verdacht mit äußerster Härte bestraft. In den letzten Kriegswochen macht sich bei den Verantwortlichen des Terrorsystems Untergangsstimmung breit. Die Organisationsstrukturen zerfallen, die Maschinerie des Terrors gerät außer Kontrolle. Nicht wenige, die dem Regime bis zuletzt treu und schrecklich dienen, bereiten sich insgeheim auf die Nachkriegszeit vor. In großem Umfang werden belastende Akten vernichtet. Von den Gestapounterlagen bleibt nur ein verschwindend kleiner Teil erhalten. Mit gefälschten Papieren verschaffen sich viele Gestapomänner eine neue Identität. Man hilft sich gegenseitig: Fluchtwege, so genannte "Rattenlinien" in sichere Zufluchtsländer - meist nach Südamerika - werden eingerichtet. Wenige Jahre nach dem Krieg tun viele wieder Dienst. Nicht selten in leitender Funktion. -

Plot: Rome 1943. ANGELA is an attractive, unwed mother who lives in a working class neighborhood of Rome. We are in the middle of the Second World War. Alone and considered a "disgrace," Angela is an easy target for gossip and backbiting. Hardened by life, she has learned to fend for herself and for her young "illegitimate" boy. Forced by necessity to ignore certain scruples and seek profit from the tragic events around her, she works on the black market for quick cash. But History, the one with a capital "H" throws her for a loop. It is October 16, 1943, the fateful day of the German purge upon Rome's Jewish Ghetto. Angela is informed of the round-up by Signor Brescia, an old jeweler who asks her to hide his son Davide in her home in exchange for a kilo of gold. Though full of misgivings, Angela accepts the trade-off and hosts the young Jew in the secret storeroom where she keeps her black market supplies. The beginning of their relationship is turbulent to say the least. Davide despises that greedy and insensitive woman, and she, in turn, considers him only "trouble," a liability that could get her into serious hot water. But in time, despite the odds, the two opposites, he the idealistic and she the practical, inexorably come to attract each other. Angela and Davide fall in love... an absolute love that denies all the glaring obstacles of those bitter days without future; a love nurtured on illusion replete with plans and projects too grand and distant to be plausible. But for Davide, that love, however fulfilling, is not enough: safely hidden in that house, he feels like a coward. At all costs, he wants to join the Resistance Movement and fight for Freedom, all the more so after he witnesses the brutal arrest of one of Angela's neighbors, the railway worker Giacomo Sinisi. Events take their course: it is March 23, 1944 and along Via Rasella, the "Bozen" Battalion is attacked by partisans. A bomb kills twenty-six soldiers and leaves roughly an equal number seriously wounded. The final death toll reaches thirty. The Nazis command an immediate reprisal. After hasty and furious negotiations, a "decimation" is ordered: for every German soldier, ten Italians will be killed, culled from the criminals, Jews and political prisoners detained at the Regina Coeli and Via Tasso prisons. News of the reprisal spreads like an evil omen and Angela, just back from the countryside outside Rome where she gets her Black Market supplies (and keeps her son out of harm's way), discovers that on precisely that same day, Davide had slipped out of the house to join the Resistance Movement. Ignoring the curfew, she marches through a city full of prowling German military vehicles, and tracks down a partisan contact who can bolster her hope that Davide is safe. But unfortunately, just the opposite is true: Davide was caught in a round-up and dragged off to Regina Coeli. Now Angela is impelled by desperation to find a solution, no matter how extreme, to save her beloved's life. She appeals to Chief Warden Marino Santipani, a longtime suitor of hers, whom she had always firmly refused. She tries to swing a deal with the man: a kilo of gold in exchange for Davide' life. But as Angela is quick to realize, it's not gold that Santipani wants. She accepts his implicit demand. The Chief Warden savagely possesses her with the arrogance of one who has finally conquered a young, attractive and spirited woman who had always tauntingly denied herself. But after Angela's mortifying sacrifice, the man reneges on his end of the deal and instead offers a painful dilemma. While recognizing his obligation, Santipani, cruel and cunning, imposes his own thankless task on her: he can cancel Davide's name from the list of condemned men to be consigned to the Germans, but she, instead of him, must name the replacement. Is Angela equal to the moral burden of deciding the life and death of another person... perhaps even a boy... or a man with wife and children? Angela caves in, she can't do it and Davide is consequently sent off to die with the other 335 victims of the Fosse Ardeatine massacre. Unspeakable grief nearly kills her as well, a grief that turns to rage and hatred. Aware that she's expecting Davide's baby, Angela is now convinced that justice can only mean one thing: murderous revenge. Gun in hand, she waits for Santipani in the shadows by the apartment building door... But in the fraction of a second between decision and action, she is overwhelmed by the realization that Davide had changed her. And suddenly, that pathetic man she is about to kill is no longer worth the weight of further remorse. But as her heart pounds and mind races, a shot is fired, its deafening report echoing through the entrance hall... a shot fired from another gun, brandished by another woman bent on revenge: Signora Sinisi, whose husband Giacomo was doomed to Davide's same fate. The Geheime Staatspolizei (German for Secret State Police, abbreviated "Gestapo") was the secret police of Nazi Germany, and its main tool of oppression and destruction, which persecuted Germans, opponents of the regime, and Jews. Gestapo (Geheime Staatspolizei) – tajna policja utworzona w nazistowskich Niemczech 26 kwietnia 1933, która w sposób bezwzględny zwalczała wszelkie przejawy oporu, rozwiązana wraz z upadkiem III Rzeszy w 1945 roku. Gestapo używało stopni Sipo, aby zasugerować ludności cywilnej przynależność do policji. Czarne mundury były używane przez całą wojnę jako mundury galowe. Na co dzień funkcjonariusze Gestapo używali szarych mundurów SS oraz mundurów policyjnych SS z wykładanym kołnierzem, koszulą i czarnym krawatem. Wszyscy funkcjonariusze Gestapo nosili na lewym rękawie romby z inicjałami SD, gdyż to właśnie SD sprawowała kierowniczą rolę w całej RSHA, a szefami pionów Gestapo zawsze byli oficerowie SD. Unter dem Befehl von Ernst Röhm überzieht die "Sturmabteilung" (SA) der NSDAP das Land mit brutalem, "wilden" Terror. Im Visier der als "Hilfspolizei" eingesetzten Schläger sind vor allem Kommunisten, Sozialdemokraten und Gewerkschafter; aber auch die deutschen Juden trifft von Anfang ihr Terror.
Aber der offene Terror der SA verschreckt auch manche Anhänger des neuen Regimes. Hitler befiehlt die Einstellung der "wilden" SA-Aktionen. Die reguläre Polizei soll wieder für Ruhe und Ordnung sorgen - nun allerdings unter nationalsozialistischer Führung. Die Polizei soll zum Machtinstrument des NS-Regimes werden. Das gilt vor allem für die politische Polizei des "Dritten Reiches": die Gestapo.
Im Mai 1933 bezieht die Gestapo ihr Dienstgebäude in der Prinz- Albrecht-Straße 8 in Berlin. Noch ist sie nur für Preußen zuständig, noch ist sie Objekt im Machtkampf der Nazi-Größen. Heinrich Himmler, Reichsführer SS, setzt sich schließlich durch. Im Frühjahr 1934 übernimmt er zusammen mit Reinhard Heydrich die Gestapo im gesamten Reich. Die erste Bewährungsprobe der neuen Formation: Die Ermordung von SA-Chef Ernst Röhm - auf Geheiß Hitlers. Röhm, der aus der SA eine "Volksmiliz" machen will, steht Hitler im Weg. Der von Gestapo und SS geplanten Mordaktion fallen Ende Juni 1934 etwa 90 Menschen zum Opfer.
Mit der Erstellung eines reichsweiten Karteisystems zur Erfassung von "Gegnern", der Ernennung Himmlers zum Chef der gesamten deutschen Polizei (1936) und der unaufhaltsamen Kompetenzerweiterung wird die Gestapo zur schärfsten Waffe Hitlers. Die Gestapo verhaftet willkürlich und exzessiv. Die in "Schutzhaft" genommenen Opfer werden in Konzentrationslager verschleppt. Ihnen wird jeder Rechtsbeistand verweigert.
Zeitzeugen schildern eindringlich die mitleidslosen Methoden der Gestapoarbeit. So zum Beispiel Johann Schwert aus Frankfurt/Main, damals im kommunistischen Widerstand. Er wird verhaftet, gefoltert und muss viele Jahre in Einzelhaft verbringen. Erst 1945 kommt er frei. Nach 1935 überwacht die Geheime Staatspolizei auch die Einhaltung der "Nürnberger Rassegesetze", und sie ist im Verlauf des mörderischen Pogroms von 1938 auch dafür verantwortlich, dass tausende männliche Juden verhaftet und in Konzentrationslager verschleppt werden.
Die wachsende Bereitschaft der Bevölkerung zur Denunziation erleichtert der Gestapo den Terror. Josef Niklasch, damals bei den Zeugen Jehovas, und Marie-Luise Schulze-Jahn, damals im studentischen Widerstand, berichten von konkreten Fällen, in denen Hinweise aus der Bevölkerung zur Verhaftung durch die Gestapo führten. Auch bei der Durchsetzung von Hitlers Expansionspolitik spielt die Gestapo eine wichtige Rolle. Ihre Aufgabe ist es, die polizeiliche Macht in den besetzten Gebieten zu übernehmen und jeden Widerstand zu unterdrücken. Am Beispiel der Stadt Würzburg dokumentiert der Film, wie sich die Gestapo am Völkermord beteiligte. In Würzburg ist neben schriftlichen Dokumenten eine einzigartige Fotosammlung überliefert, die in erschütternden Bildern der Abtransport von 852 mainfränkischen Juden in die Vernichtungslager zeigt. Ein Mitarbeiter der Gestapostelle Würzburg, der Kriminaloberassistent Oswald Gundelach, begleitet den Transport bis nach Lublin. Nach dem Krieg behauptet Gundelach, er habe lediglich "Arbeiten verrichtet, die vor 1933 und nach 1945 zu den dienstlichen Obliegenheiten der Polizei gehörten."
In Frankreich bereitet der ehemaligen Leiter der Gestapostelle Köln, Kurt Lischka, die Deportation tausender Juden vor. Dabei helfen lokale Behörden und Informanten. Gestapo é o acrónimo em alemão de Geheime Staatspolizei, significando "polícia secreta do Estado".
Sob a administração geral da SS (Schutzstaffel, em português "Tropa de Proteção"), era supervisada pela RSHA (Reichssicherheitshauptamt, em português Escritório Central de Segurança do Reich) e considerada uma organização dual da Sicherheitsdienst e até 1939 uma parte da Sicherheitspolizei. Reinhard Heydrich foi o principal chefe de operações, sendo substituído por Heinrich Müller após o atentado contra a vida de Heydrich.
A Gestapo foi criada em 26 de abril de 1933, na Prússia, a partir da Polícia Secreta Prussiana. No início, era apenas um ramo da polícia prussiana, conhecida como "Departamente 1A da Policial do Estado Prussiano".
Seu primeiro comandante foi Rudolf Diels, que recrutou membros de departamentos policiais profissionais e fez com que ela funcionasse como uma Polícia federal, semelhante ao FBI dos EUA.
O papel da Gestapo como polícia política só foi estabelecido quando Hermann Göring foi designado para suceder Diels como comandante, 1934. O termo Gestapo vem da abreviação de Geheime Staatspolizei (Polícia secreta do Estado) e levou o governo nazista a expandir sua força para além da Prússia, para toda a Alemanha. Só não teve sucesso na Baviera, onde Heinrich Himmler, chefe da SS, era o presidente de polícia e usava as forças locais da SS como polícia política.
Em abril de 1934, Góring e Himmler concordaram em colocar de lado as diferenças e, principalmente por um ódio combinado às Sturmabteilung, Göring aceitou colocar o comando da Gestapo sob a autoridade das SS. Naquele ponto, a Gestapo foi combinada com a Sicherheitspolizei e considerada uma organizaçào irmã da Sicherheitsdienst ou SD.
A Gestapo era a garantia do completo domínio da população pelo Partido nazista.

Seu primeiro comandante foi Rudolf Diels, que recrutou membros de departamentos policiais profissionais e fez com que ela funcionasse como uma Polícia federal, semelhante ao FBI dos EUA.
O papel da Gestapo como polícia política só foi estabelecido quando Hermann Göring foi designado para suceder Diels como comandante, 1934. O termo Gestapo vem da abreviação de Geheime Staatspolizei (Polícia secreta do Estado) e levou o governo nazista a expandir sua força para além da Prússia, para toda a Alemanha. Só não teve sucesso na Baviera, onde Heinrich Himmler, chefe da SS, era o presidente de polícia e usava as forças locais da SS como polícia política.
Em abril de 1934, Góring e Himmler concordaram em colocar de lado as diferenças e, principalmente por um ódio combinado às Sturmabteilung, Göring aceitou colocar o comando da Gestapo sob a autoridade das SS. Naquele ponto, a Gestapo foi combinada com a Sicherheitspolizei e considerada uma organizaçào irmã da Sicherheitsdienst ou SD.
A Gestapo era a garantia do completo domínio da população pelo Partido nazista.
Ela foi a polícia política da Alemanha nazi; criada em 26 de abril de 1933 por Hermann Göring e reorganizada em 1936 por Reinhard Heydrich, passou sob o controle de Heinrich Himmler em 1934.
Esta polícia funcionava sem tribunal, decidindo ela mesma as sanções que deviam ser aplicadas. Tornou-se célebre primeiramente na Alemanha, e depois em toda a Europa ocupada, pelo terror implacável de seus métodos. A Gestapo representou o arbítrio e o horror das forças nazistas. A sua sede ficava na rua Prinz-Albrechtstrasse, em Berlim - onde há um museu sobre a sua história.

Gestapo używało stopni Sipo, aby zasugerować ludności cywilnej przynależność do policji. Czarne mundury były używane przez całą wojnę jako mundury galowe. Na co dzień funkcjonariusze Gestapo używali szarych mundurów SS oraz mundurów policyjnych SS z wykładanym kołnierzem, koszulą i czarnym krawatem.
Wszyscy funkcjonariusze Gestapo nosili na lewym rękawie romby z inicjałami SD, gdyż to właśnie SD sprawowała kierowniczą rolę w całej RSHA, a szefami pionów Gestapo zawsze byli oficerowie SD. Gestapo było w praktyce jedynie egzekutywą w rękach SD i wykonywała wszystkie jej wytyczne. Choć cele obu pionów w wielu dziedzinach się pokrywały (bądź dublowały), to jednak siłą sprawczą całego aparatu RSHA była właśnie SD.

The Topography of Terror (German: Topographie des Terrors) is an outdoor and indoor history museum in Berlin, Germany. It is located on Niederkirchnerstrasse, formerly Prinz-Albrecht-Strasse, on the site of buildings which during the Nazi regime from 1933 to 1945 were the headquarters of the Gestapo and the SS, the principal instruments of repression during the Nazi era. The buildings that housed the Gestapo and SS headquarters were largely destroyed by Allied bombing during early 1945 and the ruins demolished after the war. Park Rangers threatened arrests to anyone found near the famous adjacent geyser. The Topography of Terror (German: Topographie des Terrors) is an outdoor and indoor history museum in Berlin, Germany. It is located on Niederkirchnerstrasse, formerly Prinz-Albrecht-Strasse, on the site of buildings which during the Nazi regime from 1933 to 1945 were the headquarters of the Gestapo and the SS, the principal instruments of repression during the Nazi era.
The buildings that housed the Gestapo and SS headquarters were largely destroyed by Allied bombing during early 1945 and the ruins demolished after the war. The boundary between the American and Soviet zones of occupation in Berlin ran along the Prinz-Albrecht-Strasse, so the street soon became a fortified boundary, and the Berlin Wall ran along the south side of the street, renamed Niederkirchnerstrasse, from 1961 to 1989. The wall here was never demolished. Indeed the section adjacent to the Topography of Terror site is the longest extant segment of the outer wall (the longer East Side Gallery section in Friedrichshain being actually part of the inner wall not visible from West Berlin).

They start by exploring the compact city center, built around a network of beautiful canals overlooked by the gabled mansions of 17th century merchants. Whilst Jonathan looks around using the locals' favorite means of transport, the bicycle, Brianna takes a tour of the waterways with the free-spirited Saint Nicolaas Boat Club. Amsterdam is renowned as one of the world's most liberal cities, and en route they check out the city's famously tolerant attitude to soft drugs like marijuana, and the nefarious goings-on in the city's infamous Red Light District.
As befits one of Europe's major cultural centers, Amsterdam is also home to numerous excellent museums. Jonathan visits the Rijksmuseum, which has a magnificent collection of paintings by the great Dutch Masters, whilst Brianna marvels at the artistic genius of Vincent Van Gogh at the Van Gogh Museum.
On the rougher fringes of the city, beyond the lovely 17th century Golden Age mansions and canals of central Amsterdam, lie the city docks. Brianna visits a replica of an East Indiaman cargo ship moored here, discovering how the great wealth of the city during its Golden Age depended predominantly on the riches that its merchants were able to extract from the Dutch colonies in Asia. Jonathan, meanwhile, visits a dockland squat -- Amsterdam, it seems, has a severe housing shortage, in part because of the difficulty of building new apartment blocks in the historic city centre preservation zone.
On their final day in the city, whilst Jonathan does what he does best -- having fun -- Brianna by contrast follows the trail of the city's darkest days during World War II. In particular, she visits the Anne Frank House, once home to the young Jewish girl whose famous diary recorded her family's last days as they hid from the Nazis in an attic, before their hiding place was betrayed to the Gestapo by a collaborator, and they were murdered in the Holocaust.
Alongside the Jews, the Nazis persecuted numerous other minority groups, including homosexuals, but happily today, in liberal Amsterdam, gays and lesbians can celebrate their love freely. Jonathan ends his trip partying along with them at one of the city's biggest events of the year - the Gay Parade - as a procession of boats and floats make their joyous way along the city center canals.

Daily Caller described the situation - A Yellowstone tour guide accused the National Park Service of using "Gestapo tactics" while shutting down the park, after armed rangers locked a group of terrified senior citizens inside their hotel for many hours to prevent them from visiting nearby attractions.
The Lawrence, Massachusetts Eagle-Tribune reports that the rangers also prevented the group from taking pictures of wildlife and from stopping at a rest facility during their departure, forcing seniors to wait well over two hours before using the restroom.

On May 1, 2011 I was in for a special treat: a guided bicycle tour of East Berlin. Local expert guide Stefan Danziger from Berlin on Bike took me through the Friedrichshain neighbourhood to the Bornholmerstrasse Bridge, the first former East German border crossing that opened up when the wall came down in 1989. Then we went through the picturesque Volkspark Friedrichshain which even features a fairy tale fountain!
Along the way Stefan shared his local knowledge of Berlin and its fascinating history with me. We continued on to the famous Karl-Marx Allee, the former Stalinallee, with its monumental socialist realist buildings. After a tasty lunch on the Boxhagener Square Stefan showed me a really neat cultural and entertainment area that is housed in a series of former railway sheds on Revaler Strasse.
Finally he took me to the East Side Gallery, one of the few remaining sections of the Berlin Wall, an international memorial for freedom that features many famous paintings by artists from all over the world. Discovering Berlin by bicycle with local expert Stefan was a real highlight of my trip!
After the bike tour I visited the New Synagogue on Oranienburger Strasse, a fantastic building from the 1860s that was the main synagogue of Berlin's large Jewish community. After being partially destroyed by the Nazis during Kristallnacht in 1938 and following more damage due to air raids in 1943 it was largely demolished after WWII. The street facade and the impressive gold-leaf covered dome are a true reconstruction of the magnificent original building that today again houses a small prayer and meditation room.
To understand the city's history even better I went to see one of Berlin's most visited sites: the Topography of Terror, a documentation centre located on the actual site of the former headquarters of the Nazi SS and the Gestapo. The site also features the cellars of the former Gestapo headquarters where many political prisoners were tortured and executed. Unfortunately I arrived late in the evening and only had one hour to explore the extensive complex, but it helped me learn about the power structures and oppressive tactics employed by the Nazi regime.
Finally I walked a bit further and hit Checkpoint Charlie, the most well-known border crossing between East Berlin and West Berlin. A replica of the original guardhouse together with oversize images of a Russian and an American soldier can still be seen today. Located just steps away is the Checkpoint Charlie Museum which commemorates many of the daring escape attempts from the former East Germany.
