HEADLINE:AAA: Expect packed roads Memorial Day weekend CAPTION: AAA released results from the company's annual summer travel survey on Tuesday telling drivers to pack their patience when they hit the roads this upcoming Memorial Day holiday weekend, because the roads will be packed. (May 15) SOT Yolanda Cade, AAA, Managing Director: "Now, AAA is projecting that 34.8 percent of Americans will travel 50 miles or more from home this Memorial holiday weekend. Now this represents an increase of 1.2 percent year-over-year or more than a half-million people more than last year's 34.3 million travelers. So, it's pretty clear here that America's passion for the traditional summer vacation and visiting family and friends still remains strong despite seasonally high gas prices this spring and continued concerns about the economy. So, what does that mean? That means almost 9 out of 10 travelers will be taking to the nations roads between May 24th and May 28th//We do expect that the roads will be full during the holiday with approximately 30.7 million people driving to their destinations which is an increase of 1.2 percent over last year. Now the automobile is by far still the most dominant form of travel that consumers choose during this weekend.// Air travel serves a relatively small share of the total number of memorial holiday travelers with 7 percent selecting air as their means of transportation.// This summer however many of them are choosing vacations that will simply give them more bang for their buck. And despite high gas prices and questions about the economy, Americans are still traveling."
