The private sector is getting in on the action too, setting up a Smart Commute Toronto initiative to increase the city's transit efficiency.
1. The smartest city in the world is Vienna - Vienna was the only city that ranked in the top 10 in every category. It is establishing bold smart-city targets and tracking their progress to reach these goals with programs like Smart Energy Vision 2050, Roadmap 2020, and Action Plan 2012-2015.
A smart city is defined as using information and communication technologies to be more intelligent and efficient in the use of resources, resulting in cost and energy savings, improved service delivery and quality of life, and reduced environmental footprint--all supporting innovation and the low-carbon economy.
The rankings were determined by the cities scores on 4 global categories: Innovation, Green ranking, Quality of life and digital city.
Port Harcourt, Nigeria in 2014. As a Nigerian American born abroad this was a great experience for me. It was my first time back in Nigeria in 10 years. And overall it was my third time in Nigeria. I really learned about my country. I hope to visit frequently, I'm already looking for another ticket!!!

Intamin Transportation Ltd. has signed an agreement with Rivers Monorail Company Ltd to deliver a Monorail System for the city of Port Harcourt. Port Harcourt and its metropolitan area counts actually 3.7 Mio citizens and is characterised by oil production and its associated industries. The rapidly increasing traffic in the city regularly leads to congested roads. Therefore city-planners were looking for a fast implementation of an efficient mass transit system.
Rivers Monorail will be using Intamin’s monorail train type P30, an electric driven train especially designed and most suitable for public transport services in cities.
The train is characterized by an innovative design, spacious cabins and is equipped with large size door openings for easy access for passengers with luggage. The modern design of the trains combined with a seamless appearance of the track system integrates the system excellently into the environment.
The system covers approx. twenty kilometres within the city of Port Harcourt, serving 14 stations between Aggrey Rd. and the loop North/East of the Garrison station.
The train guiding system combined with a sophisticated automatic train protection and guiding solution, allows for optimisation of line performance while improving the safety of operation with trains at a speed of up to 80km/h. The train operation is monitored by staff in the Operation Control Centre.
The monorail project is part of the city’s and River State infrastructural investments to improve the traffic situation.
With over four decades of experience Intamin provides Monorail Systems for public transportation which are in compliance or even exceed the highest standards and safety regulations demanded by public transportation.

Port Harcourt is the capital of Rivers State and a port town in southern Nigeria. It lies along the Bonny River (an eastern distributary of the Niger), 41 miles (66 km) upstream from the Gulf of Guinea. Founded in 1912 in an area traditionally inhabited by the Ikwerre people, an Igbo subgroup, it serves as a port, named for Lewis Harcourt - the colonial secretary. Port Harcourt has long been an important merchant port and is today the centre of Nigeria’s oil industry. Its exports include petroleum, coal, tin, palm products, cocoa, and groundnuts. Among the industries of the area are timber processing, car manufacturing, food and tobacco processing, and the manufacture of rubber, glass, metal, and paper products, cement, petroleum products, paint, enamelware, bicycles, furniture, and soap.
Port Harcourt was a site for World War I military operations against German Kamerun; it was once part of the Republic of Biafra which seceded from Nigeria and was dissolved in 1970. Commercial quantities of crude oil was discovered in Oloibiri in 1956 and Port Harcourt's economy turned to petroleum when the first shipment of Nigerian crude oil was exported through the city in 1958. Through the benefits of the Nigerian petroleum industry Port Harcourt was further developed with aspects of modernisation such as overpasses and city blocks. Oil firms that currently have offices in the city include Royal Dutch Shell and Chevron.

Port Harcourt witnessed its greatest club party ever on Friday, July 26th, with the debut of Club Ultimate, the latest innovation from Nigeria's leading beer brand, Gulder. Thousands of young Nigerians trooped to the Aztech Acrium to experience the ultimate club event, hosted by Channel O VJ Denrele Edun. Intamin Transportation Ltd. has signed an agreement with Rivers Monorail Company Ltd to deliver a Monorail System for the city of Port Harcourt. Port Harcourt and its metropolitan area counts actually 3.7 Mio citizens and is characterised by oil production and its associated industries. The rapidly increasing traffic in the city regularly leads to congested roads. Therefore city-planners were looking for a fast implementation of an efficient mass transit system.
Rivers Monorail will be using Intamin’s monorail train type P30, an electric driven train especially designed and most suitable for public transport services in cities.
The train is characterized by an innovative design, spacious cabins and is equipped with large size door openings for easy access for passengers with luggage. The modern design of the trains combined with a seamless appearance of the track system integrates the system excellently into the environment.
The system covers approx. twenty kilometres within the city of Port Harcourt, serving 14 stations between Aggrey Rd. and the loop North/East of the Garrison station.
The train guiding system combined with a sophisticated automatic train protection and guiding solution, allows for optimisation of line performance while improving the safety of operation with trains at a speed of up to 80km/h. The train operation is monitored by staff in the Operation Control Centre.
The monorail project is part of the city’s and River State infrastructural investments to improve the traffic situation.
With over four decades of experience Intamin provides Monorail Systems for public transportation which are in compliance or even exceed the highest standards and safety regulations demanded by public transportation.

A UN report says it will cost up to $1bn and take 30 years to clean up the damage done by decades of drilling by Shell. Oil exploration in Nigeria's south for several decades has had a debilitating effect on the environment of the region. Shell, the Anglo-Dutch oil company, has been accused of serious failures in its handling of the pollution in the Niger Delta and shirking its responsibility. Shell faces damages over Nigeria oil spill Dutch court upholds just one out of five allegations by Niger Delta farmers against the oil company. A court in the Netherlands has ruled that Royal Dutch Shell can be held partially responsible for pollution in Nigeria's Niger Delta region and ordered it to pay damages to one farmer. Dutch court: Shell can be liable for Nigeria spills
A judge in the Hague ruled that the multinational can be held legally responsible for alleged pollution by its subsidiary in Nigeria. The ruling means other Dutch-based companies operating around the world can also be sued. Shell says it's "disappointed" by the ruling. Shell has done next to nothing to help Ogoni. By 1996, Shell employed only 88 Ogoni (0.0002% of the Ogoni population, and only 2% of Shell's employees in Nigeria). Ogoni villages have no clean water, electricity, abysmal health care, no jobs for displaced farmers and fisher persons and face the effects of unrestrained environmental molestation by Shell everyday.
Since Shell began drilling oil in Ogoniland in 1958, the people of Ogoniland have had pipelines built across their farmlands and in front of their homes, suffered endemic oil leaks from these very pipelines, been forced to live with the constant flaring of gas. This environmental assault has smothered land with oil, killed masses of fish and other aquatic life, and introduced devastating acid rain to the land of the Ogoni. For the Ogoni, a people dependent upon farming and fishing, the poisoning of the land and water has had devastating economic and health consequences. Shell claims to clean up its oil spills, but such "clean-ups" consist of techniques like burning the crude which results in a permanent layer of crusted oil metres thick and scooping oil into holes dug in surrounding earth.
Both Shell and the government admit that Shell contributes to the funding of the military in the Delta region. Under the auspices of "protecting" Shell from peaceful demonstrators in the village of Umeuchem (10 miles from Ogoni), the police killed 80 people, destroyed houses and vital crops. Shell conceded it twice paid the military for going to specific villages. Although it disputes that the purpose of these excursions was to quiet dissent, each of the military missions paid for by Shell resulted in Ogoni fatalities. Shell has also admitted purchasing weapons for the police force who guard its facilities, and there is growing suspicion that Shell funds a much greater portion of the military than previously admitted.
Ken Saro-Wiwa and the Ogoni 8 were leaders of MOSOP, the Movement for Survival of the Ogoni People. As outspoken environmental and human rights activists, they declared that Shell was not welcome in Ogoniland. On November 10, 1995, they were hanged after a trial by a special military tribunal (whose decisions cannot be appealed) in the murder of four other Ogoni activists. The defendants' lawyers were harassed and denied access to their clients. Although none of them were near the town where the murders occurred, they were convicted and sentenced to death in a trial that many heads of state strongly condemned for a stunning lack of evidence, unmasked partiality towards the prosecution and the haste of the trial. The executions were carried out a mere eight days after the decision. Two witnesses against the MOSOP leaders admitted that Shell and the military bribed them to testify against Ken Saro-Wiwa with promises of money and jobs at Shell. Ken's final words before his execution were:

Nigerians have risen up and asked for reforms after years of corruption in the country's oil industry. Questions are being asked about how much power does Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan's new government have? Or is it the government or the oil companies that really hold the power in the country? Nigeria is a major player in the oil business and the 12th biggest exporter in the world. Eighty percent of the country's revenue comes from oil and half of that is from the British/Dutch Company, Shell.
In 1995, nine local environmental activists were hanged by the Nigerian government for protesting against Shell activities. Similar atrocities continue today and many point the blame at Shell's hidden hand. On this week's INFocus, we will look into the many human rights abuses committed by Shell in North African country.

Oil exploration in Nigeria's south for several decades has had a debilitating effect on the environment of the region.
Shell, the Anglo-Dutch oil company, has been accused of serious failures in its handling of the pollution in the Niger Delta and shirking its responsibility.
Activists have demanded that Shell's licence be revoked for the environmental disaster.
But with 90 per cent of the government's revenue coming from petroleum exports, oil companies seem to have clear political leverage over the issue.

South African President, Nelson Mandela, is due to arrive in Britain later today (Monday) for a five-day official visit.
He's to have talks with Prime Minister John Major, and will be a guest of the Queen at Buckingham Palace.
This is Nelson Mandela's first visit to Britain since being elected President - and could also be his last. The 78 year old President announced at the weekend that he would not seek another term in office.
Two years into his presidency, Nelson Mandela is preparing for his first trip to Britain as South Africa's President.
Before he left - he met with some members of the press where he spoke of his country - and the role he would be playing in the coming years.
Mandela endorsed Thabo Mbeki, his deputy and a long-time aide in the struggle against apartheid to take over as President when he steps down in 1999.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
"Well, you must remember that I'm 78. And perhaps older than your parents - And I don't think that it is wise that a confident South Africa - a robust country with a younger democracy should be led by a septuagenarian. And at the end of my term I'll be 81. You need younger man who can really shake and move this country, and many of my colleagues are head and shoulders above me in almost every respect and I think that rather than being an asset I'm more of a decoration."

During his presidency Mandela has come face to face with a choice of intervening in Nigeria - a country also blasted for its human rights record.
While angry with the hangings of poet and activist Ken Saro-wiwa and some of his colleagues - Mandela felt wrongly accused of inaction at the Commonwealth meeting in New Zealand.
He alone, he said, did not possess the authority to solely condemn and act against Nigeria's government.

"When dealing with a situation such as Nigeria - you can't deal with it on the basis of the moral authority possessed - the so-called moral authority possessed by a single man. It is countries who have got a substantial trade with that country that will bring about change, like the United State of America which can launch sanctions and withdrawal and refuse to buy Nigerian oil. Britain, France, they can bring about pressure. Moral authority alone cannot."

Mandela was also questioned about his hopes for the trip to Britain.
His last trip was a celebration of his release from prison - will this one - the press asked - be a mission to seek more investors?

Dutch court upholds just one out of five allegations by Niger Delta farmers against the oil company.
A court in the Netherlands has ruled that Royal Dutch Shell can be held partially responsible for pollution in Nigeria's Niger Delta region and ordered it to pay damages to one farmer.
The court dismissed on Wednesday four out of five allegations against the oil company. The amount of damages to be paid was to be announced at a later date.
Activists say the case could set a precedent for damage claims related to the foreign activities of multinational companies.
Four Nigerians and interest group Friends of the Earth filed the suit in 2008 in The Hague, where Shell has its joint global headquarters, seeking unspecified reparations for lost income from contaminated land and waterways in the Niger Delta.
The Nigerians - fishermen and farmers - said they could no longer feed their families because the region had been polluted by oil from Shell's pipelines and production facilities.
The pollution is a result of oil spills in 2004, 2005 and 2007, they said.
"The significance of the case is that at least there is an international agreement, if you like, in an international space where money and corruption do not come to play the way it does in Nigeria," Annkio Briggs, a Niger Delta activist, told Al Jazeera's Yvonne Ndege in Port Harcourt.
"This is a great victory even though we still have the issues of the other ones that have been thrown out. It is very important for us and very encouraging that we will have to take these cases outside of Nigeria for Nigerians to have justice.
"Ironically we have to take the cases out to the counties where these oil companies come from. So it shows what we've been saying for years - that oil companies are doing [things in Nigeria] illegally what they will never dare to do anywhere else in the world."

With a number of chemical firms preparing to release earnings in the oncoming weeks, including Dow Chemical (NYSE:DOW) and Huntsman Corporation (NYSE:HUN), Citigroup Equity Research issued a note to clients Thursday saying they see anecdotal evidence of restocking.
Citi analyst P.J. Juvekar said they believe "restocking has a long way to go with the exception of China, which may be at normal inventory levels. US ethylene inventory days are expected to reach a record low of ~3 days this month, according to CMAI. Recent discussions with converters lead us to believe that inventories in the supply chain still remain low."
Citigroup expects raw material costs to dominate discussions on second quarter guidance as prices for oil and oil derivatives increase. Companies that are more exposed to oil such as Lubrizol Corporation (NYSE:LZ), Sherwin-Wililams Company (NYSE:SHW), The Valspar Corporation (NYSE:VAL), and Huntsman Corporation (NYSE:HUN) may find it difficult to boost prices.
Juvekar concluded, "We are generally raising 1Q and FY10 estimates for specialty and commodity names. We prefer early cyclicals and beneficiaries of cheap gas -DOW, PPG, PX, and AGU - and select specialties like ALB, ECL, and NLC."
wn.com/News Update Citigroup Issues Q1 Chemical Earnings Preview, Likes Specialty And Commodity Names
With a number of chemical firms preparing to release earnings in the oncoming weeks, including Dow Chemical (NYSE:DOW) and Huntsman Corporation (NYSE:HUN), Citigroup Equity Research issued a note to clients Thursday saying they see anecdotal evidence of restocking.
Citi analyst P.J. Juvekar said they believe "restocking has a long way to go with the exception of China, which may be at normal inventory levels. US ethylene inventory days are expected to reach a record low of ~3 days this month, according to CMAI. Recent discussions with converters lead us to believe that inventories in the supply chain still remain low."
Citigroup expects raw material costs to dominate discussions on second quarter guidance as prices for oil and oil derivatives increase. Companies that are more exposed to oil such as Lubrizol Corporation (NYSE:LZ), Sherwin-Wililams Company (NYSE:SHW), The Valspar Corporation (NYSE:VAL), and Huntsman Corporation (NYSE:HUN) may find it difficult to boost prices.
Juvekar concluded, "We are generally raising 1Q and FY10 estimates for specialty and commodity names. We prefer early cyclicals and beneficiaries of cheap gas -DOW, PPG, PX, and AGU - and select specialties like ALB, ECL, and NLC."
