JNU teachers, students, journalists and even bystanders were beaten up by the goons when they came to the court for the hearing of arrested JNUSU President Kanhaiya Kumar. As the sprawling campus of the Jawaharlal Nehru University in the national capital continued to simmer, a student who was present at the Feb 9 meeting called to protest the hanging of terror mastermind Afzal Guru, recounted the sequence of events that led to the arrest of students' union president Kanhaiya Kumar and subsequently snowballed into a huge state-vs-students tug of war.
"I am a JNU student studying right now and also happen to be a witness from distance for some events that happened on that controversial date - 9th February 2016. So, that kinda renders me more legitimate to answer this question than people who only know about it through Zee News and Times Now," JNU student Harshit Agarwal wrote in response to a Quora question on the issue.
His answer has been viewed over 17,000 times and has been shared by former Union Minister Shashi Tharoor on social platforms, among others.
"On 9th February 2016, ex-members of a student organization DSU, short for 'Democratic Students Union' had called for a cultural meeting of a protest against what they called 'the judicial killing of Afzal Guru and Maqbool Bhat' and in solidarity with 'the struggle of Kashmiri people for their democratic right to self-determination.' A lot of Kashmiri students from inside and outside the campus were to attend the event. 'Democratic Students Union(DSU)' is an ultra-leftist group in the campus that believes in the ideology of Maoism. It's a very small group of very well read students. They are not terrorists or naxals by any means. I have been in the campus for more than 2 years and never have I witnessed or heard of them committing a terror activity as much as of throwing a stone, let alone overthrowing the state," Agarwal wrote.

In the U.S., "Professors" commonly occupy any of several positions in academia, typically the ranks of Assistant Professor, Associate Professor or full Professor.
Research and education are among the main tasks of professors with the time spent in research or teaching depending strongly on the type of institution. Publication of articles in conferences, journals, and books is essential to occupational advancement. As of August 2007 teaching in tertiary educational institutions is one of the fastest growing occupations, topping the U.S. Department of Labor's list of "above average wages and high projected growth occupations," with a projected increase of 524,000 positions between 2004 and 2014.
Most professors in the U.S. are male,[citation needed]liberal (in the American political sense), and upper middle class. A slight majority of professors ranked among the top 15% of wage earners, in 2005.
According to a study by Robert Lichter, a professor at George Mason University, "The vast majority of professors in the United States identify themselves as liberal, and registered Democrats commonly outnumber registered Republicans." This varies across departments. Despite the liberal leaning of most professors, political scientist Brett O'Bannon of DePauw University has pointed out that the liberal opinions of professors seem to have little if any effect on the political orientation of students. In terms of education, the vast majority hold doctorate degrees. Professors at community colleges may only have a master's degree while those at four year institutions are commonly required to hold a doctorate degree.

Plot: A group of students are spending the summer vacation at a university camp studying the science of linguistics. One of the camp directors, Jaroslaw, is a young professor who prefers the straightforward, intimate approach to students. He is opposed in his liberal views by Jakub, who likes to manipulate people. There is a confrontation from the beginning when Jaroslaw allows to attend the seminar a student who presents the views not according to the official line. In the end, a jury prize is given to mediocre paper, while the suspected school of thought still draws a recommendation. Finally the deputy rector arrives for the closing ceremonies, and since he disfavors the line of thought awarded by the recommendation the tensions rise. They climax when student in question bites the rector in the ear while receiving recommendation. The confrontation results in a scandal and the police is called in.

As the sprawling campus of the Jawaharlal Nehru University in the national capital continued to simmer, a student who was present at the Feb 9 meeting called to protest the hanging of terror mastermind Afzal Guru, recounted the sequence of events that led to the arrest of students' union president Kanhaiya Kumar and subsequently snowballed into a huge state-vs-students tug of war.
"I am a JNU student studying right now and also happen to be a witness from distance for some events that happened on that controversial date - 9th February 2016. So, that kinda renders me more legitimate to answer this question than people who only know about it through Zee News and Times Now," JNU student Harshit Agarwal wrote in response to a Quora question on the issue.
His answer has been viewed over 17,000 times and has been shared by former Union Minister Shashi Tharoor on social platforms, among others.
"On 9th February 2016, ex-members of a student organization DSU, short for 'Democratic Students Union' had called for a cultural meeting of a protest against what they called 'the judicial killing of Afzal Guru and Maqbool Bhat' and in solidarity with 'the struggle of Kashmiri people for their democratic right to self-determination.' A lot of Kashmiri students from inside and outside the campus were to attend the event. 'Democratic Students Union(DSU)' is an ultra-leftist group in the campus that believes in the ideology of Maoism. It's a very small group of very well read students. They are not terrorists or naxals by any means. I have been in the campus for more than 2 years and never have I witnessed or heard of them committing a terror activity as much as of throwing a stone, let alone overthrowing the state," Agarwal wrote.

A laboratory in the College of Agricultural, Consumer and Environmental Sciences at New Mexico State University is home to ongoing research on bed bugs and their resistance to certain insecticides. Alvaro Romero, assistant professor of urban entomology in NMSU’s Department of Entomology, Plant Pathology and Weed Science, co-authored an article recently published in the Journal of Medical Entomology regarding the new findings about resistance of some United States bed bug populations to insecticides commonly used for bed bug control. For the first time, Alvaro and other researchers are reporting that there are some populations of bed bugs in the United States that have developed resistance to neonicotinoids. -

Dr. Kocian and the students, who last reported on Sept. 30, 2015, have been conducting interviews with addicts at various stages of recovery since April. They were asked to present their findings to high-ranking FBI and Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) officials and agents as part of a task force investigation because of the prevalence of heroin use in Westmoreland County. Regina Bateson is an Assistant Professor of Political Science at MIT. She joined the Department in July 2013, after completing her PhD at Yale University. She studies comparative politics, with interests in crime, violence, civil wars, policing, and informal institutions. Her current book project explores the ways that ordinary people understand and provide for their own security. The book draws on extensive field research in Guatemala, where Regina argues that local experiences during the civil war explain variation in postwar systems of vigilantism and social control. In a separate research agenda, she is also investigating how violence and trauma affect political behavior.
Regina's work has twice been recognized by the American Political Science Association: in 2014 she won the Gabriel A. Almond Award for the best dissertation in comparative politics, and in 2013, she won the Heinz I. Eulau Award for the best article published in the American Political Science Review in the previous year. Regina received her BA from Stanford University, and she was previously a Foreign Service Officer for the US Department of State. Her research has been supported by the School of Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences at MIT, the National Science Foundation, the Tinker Foundation, and Yale University.

Silicon is a remarkably useful element. Its abundance, low cost and low toxicity, combined with vast practical know-how means it is a leading material on which to base technologies. However for good reason, certain applications have under-utilised Si, with thermoelectrics (TE) being one example. Compared to other materials, highly-doped Si has desirably large Seebeck coefficient and high electrical conductivity, but these are negated by high thermal conductivity, meaning that TE performance is relatively poor for bulk Si, about 100-fold worse than for popular TE materials.
This talk will review some of the methods being explored to reduce the Si thermal conductivity, highlighting the significant engineering challenges involved, particularly as solutions until now have involved substantial alteration of the Si crystal structure, such as the introduction of porosity or the formation of nanowires or nanostructures. The talk will describe a range of successful alternative processes – such as so-called vacancy-engineering – which, via ion implantation and rapid-thermal annealing, leaves the Si structure almost indistinguishable from bulk Si. This novel approach shows that the introduction of large concentrations of lattice vacancies in silicon creates more than a 25-fold reduction in thermal conductivity, while electrical conductivity and Seebeck coefficient are largely maintained.
This results in thermoelectric performance comparable to silicon nanowires, but in a more robust material that is straight-forward to fabricate. Other novel strategies for Si thermoelectrics being explored by my group – such as dislocation-engineering – will also be discussed, as will our recent work to overcome engineering challenges to apply these methods to first, thin-films, and ultimately to bulk materials.
Presenters Bio:
Nick Bennett received a Master’s degree in Physics from the University of Warwick in 2004. Later in the same year he began a PhD at the University of Surrey. His research thesis investigated the effects of strain on dopants in silicon. In 2007 Nick joined Newcastle University as a Postdoctoral Researcher, continuing work on nano-scale doping of silicon- and germanium-based materials. In 2009 he accepted a research position at Dublin City University, initially in a Postdoctoral Researcher position, before assuming a Lecturing role and leading two projects as Principal Investigator – the first on novel doping metrologies for nano-electronics/photovoltaics, and the second on silicon nano-pillars for thermoelectrics.
Since 2013 Nick has been Assistant Professor at Heriot-Watt University. His research aims to enhance the electronic, optical and thermal properties of silicon-based materials for applications in energy harvesting devices, such as thermoelectric generators or photovoltaic cells. Dr Bennett is an author on over 50 research publications, has presented work at numerous conferences worldwide, including two invited talks. He leads the Nano-Materials Lab at Heriot-Watt, a research group which currently consists of himself, 4 PhD students and 1 Research Fellow. He is theme leader for ‘Energy Materials and Storage’ within HWU’s cross-disciplinary Energy Academy. He lectures on the topic of renewable energy technologies and is Programme Director of HWU’s MSc in Renewable Energy Engineering.

Lilia Soto, Assistant Professor of American Studies and Latina/o Studies, College of A&S;, at University of Wyoming, presented Mexican-America in the Napa Valley: Wine, Tourism, and Race in the Wine Country during the Spring Saturday U. The event took place at the National Museum of Wildlife Art in Jackson, WY on March 12, 2016.
This presentation examines the experiences of Mexicans in the Napa Valley in California as workers and as wine makers. Soto argues that they have been hidden from the Napa Valley narrative, rendering them new immigrants at best and invisible at worse. To uncover their stories, multiple historical moments are discussed and examined – and shared in this presentation.
Saturday University is a collaborative program connecting popular University of Wyoming professors with Wyoming residents who have a desire to learn. Saturday University is sponsored by the University of Wyoming, University of Wyoming Foundation and the Wyoming Humanities Council. The program is presented locally by Central Wyoming College and the National Museum of Wildlife Art.

Dr. Drury and Rev. Beck joined us on January 6, 2016 to speak on the potential for the practice of testimony to help adolescents lead joyful, flourishing lives:
“The verdict is out: when our teenagers talk about their faith, they are formed into more faithful people. But being a "more faithful person" doesn't necessarily lead to a joy-filled life. In fact, in many cases, we see evidence of God-talk resulting in loneliness and guilt. Why is it that some conversations about God increase our joy and intimacy while others simply leave us feeling isolated and miserable? What if the teenagers within our ministries could find their conversations about God to be life-giving? What if articulating their faith was a meaningful experience? Throughout this lecture we will explore various factors of testifying that contribute to a joy-filled life.”

This interview is from the 2014 AA&MDSIF; Bone Marrow Failure Disease Scientific Symposium. Dr. David Araten is an assistant professor in the Division of Hematology at the NYU School of Medicine in New York City. Prior to holding this position, he worked as an assistant professor and instructor in hematology at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, also in New York City. Learn how scientists and subsistence hunters are collaborating using a combination of satellite imagery and local observations to study the effects of changing sea ice on the behavior and migration of walrus, bearded, ringed and spotted seals in Alaska. Olivia Lee has a PhD in wildlife and fisheries sciences from Texas A&M; University, and a BA in marine science from the University of Hawaii at Hilo. Topic: Understanding Innovation and the Impact of Institutional Change in Intellectual Property Rights in the Emerging Market of China. Kenneth Huang, Assistant Professor of Strategic Management, was awarded the Sing Lun Fellowship for the period October 2010 to March 2012. In his lecture, Kenneth provided an overview of the innovation landscape in China, followed by an elaboration of a new conceptual framework (jointly developed with the co-authors), to understand the differential impact of the IPR regime shift on these firms' innovation strategies and behaviours. He shared his empirical analysis and findings, and discussed the implications for policymakers as well as strategies for both the Chinese and Western firms. -

Since its inception in 1935, roller derby has been a co-ed, egalitarian sport. Not so lately, according to Dr. Michella Marino, Assistant Professor of History at Hastings College, as controversial gender politics have arisen between the modern women’s and men’s roller derby leagues. On Friday, March 27, 2015, at 10 am in French Memorial Chapel (800 N. Turner Ave.), she explored gender politics in roller derby during her Artist Lecture Series Invited Faculty Lecture. Talk Title: "Design of Ultra-low Power Integrated Circuits with Emerging Technology"
Abstract: For more than five decades, the continuous development of integrated circuits based on semiconductor technology have been driving the revolution of modern electronics, from personal computers to workstation, from smartphone to wearable devices. As Moore’s law slows down in recent years, we are more than ever under urgency of exploring novel solutions to solve the pressing issues associated with technology scaling such as power consumption and process variation. This talk will first present some of the past work in designing ultra-low power mobile processors in advanced CMOS technology using statistical analysis. The second part of the talk will present a few recent developments from the speaker, including emerging memristor based configurable IC design with self-healing operation, low voltage speculative computing with integrated power management, and silicon tracking circuits for reconfigurability and hardware security.
Bio: Prof. Jie Gu received the B.S degree from Tsinghua University, China, the M.S degree from Texas A&M; University, and the Ph.D degree from University of Minnesota in 2008. Dr. Gu joined the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at Northwestern University from late 2014. Before joining Northwestern University, Dr. Gu worked at Texas Instruments, Dallas, TX from 2007 to 2010 as a key designer on ultra-low voltage DSP processor and the next-generation power management technique for application processor used in the cell phone. Lately, Dr. Gu was a Senior Staff Engineer in Maxlinear, Inc., leading the development of low power broadband mixed-signal communication ICs.

His residency was in internal medicine at Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center and received his medical degree from Harvard Medical School in Boston. Dr. Araten's research has focused largely on PNH and he has published in a wide variety of peer reviewed journals on this topic. He is also a recipient of the 1997 New Researcher Award & Vernille Family Fund Research Grant awarded by the Aplastic Anemia and MDS International Foundation.

Climate change significantly effects vast regions of the sensitive arctic landscape. As a result, previously inaccessible locations will open up for commerce, research, natural resource exploration and recreation, with an increase of human traffic and environmental impact. The ability to monitor the changes is vital for environmental monitoring, resource management, disaster response and patterns of use. The arctic region’s vast size, harsh environmental conditions, lack of reliable power and sparse communication infrastructure requires alternative means of survey and monitoring tools: cheap, redundant, decentralized, distributed and asynchronous. This talk will present a conceptual design of sensor networks that are inspired by the neuro-physiology of the human brain for event sensing in vast remote regions.
