We hope that the video will make it clear that
SWOSU and the
Health Department are committed to stopping as much falling as we possibly can.
The Western Technology Center has led the way in supporting free evidence-based fall prevention classes during the day (10-11am Tu.&Thurs.;)
We are moving ahead in bringing this training to the
Weatherford Pioneer Center. And by offering the opportunity to provide certified teacher training to the personnel at the
YMCA, we hope to have them spreading the training across the ages, out there as well. Where ever our vulnerable seniors have an opportunity to have a trained person advise them on any of the many actions that effect their stability, balance, basic fitness, and self-confidence, there is clearly a place for one of our graduates.
At the beginning of the video, I make the
point that the specific nature of the falls that are sweeping across
Western Oklahoma has led us to start with the three fall prevention forms designed to prevent those falls. We will of course, move on to cover falls in the other five directions as soon as we have the class members on the vital path to having those the first three forms moving strongly and steadily into their defensive reflexes—the
Silver Shield that is either there, or not, when the too often lethal fall begins.
As important as fall prevention is, it’s important to understand that as soon as we begin moving through the growing number of forms in a balanced and relaxed manner, the increased circulation, the fuller healthy breathing, the
peace of mind gained by leaving the worries of the day behind, all lead to a number of well documented health benefits: “improved balance and posture, strengthened muscles, reduced stress, positive attitude/self-esteem, reduction of arthritic symptoms, increased flexibility, improved cardiovascular
function, reduced hypertension, improved quality of sleep, enhanced stamina, increased energy level, and stress reduction.”--mayoclinic.com/health/tai-chi/SA00087
I am a 78 year old 30% service-related disabled veteran—two bad knees and a bad back.
I've been teaching this program since 2009. I have a number of students in my class at the
Western Technology Center who have fully recovered from knee replacements, serious hip injuries, bouts of dangerous dizziness, and the clear need for more hip and leg strength. They have all met these goals and more, and continue to come, some from day one, because we can't afford to let our
Silver Shields get rusty, and we fully enjoy continuing to lead full and active lives.
I have been teaching the
Personal Safety Training courses at SWOSU since
2002—which makes use of the
Better Balance system's extremely strong fall-proof stepping and the very efficient hand and arm movements that keep the nearby space safely clear of incoming forces. So instead of fighting, this gives us space to slip away to a safe distance, unharmed. There is also a harm-free professional version of this training for licensed professional counselors, therapists, and social workers, for 14
CEU's. So the investment in learning the
Tai Chi:
Moving for Better
Balance Tai Chi forms provides a cornerstone of health and safety for yourself, your family, your colleagues, and your customers.
Past, present, and future.
It's time to catch up, and we can begin right here.
I hope to see you in GSTDY 1741 Interdisciplinary

Seniors to audit the course free, and give them the chance to live out the life they so clearly earned. They built this place. Now we can build the Silver Shield with them. For more info contact robert.lackey@swosu.edu
