Heinz Kohut - Se', narcisismo, personalita'. Rel: Flavia Andreucci.Coordinatore: G.G.Giacomini.

Many of the chapters of my book, The Search For Being, have been very important to me. But this one, Heinz Kohut's Perspective, "Confirmation And Other Needs of Being," was one of the most important. I think it is important to our society, too, because it can help explain the intractable problem of our mass shootings. But we also need to look at other chapters to get insights into what is going wrong. We have to look to Winnicott who explains how the false self is created. These shooters don't remember the deficits that were part of their early environment, but the body memories are there. Some environmental failure results in a lack of ego strength, the development of a strong sense of self. It is a sure bet that the inner life of these shooters is one of chaos, unintegration. One suspects that they introjected, swallowed whole, aspects of people in their environment, rather than identifying with the function they provided for them which contributes to a lack of integration, incongruence. Getting back to Kohut, my bet is they lacked the twinship - role models of people with personality types similar to theirs - that is often necessary for us to know ourselves, to be ourselves, to understand our strengths and gifts and potentialities. It is a sure bet they lacked the idealizing function which would have made them able to soothe themselves and leads to emotional regulation. It is a sure bet they lacked confirmation for their unique personalities, perhaps, because they lived in a household where parents were unfamiliar with concepts of personality type and misinterpreted their child's differentness. When we get to Erich Fromm's perspective, the relationship between violence and being will be explored in greater depth. But, for now, what this chapter tells us is confirmation for our specialness, uniqueness, someone whose strength we can merge with when we don't have the self-structure to soothe ourselves, someone to idealize, twinship - others like ourselves, role models for our personality type - are the ingredients of a healthy functioning individual. It is a sure bet the shooters we see engaging in these mass killings lacked these requirements for a healthy self. What society needs to do to avoid more and more mass shootings is see that the prerequisites for healthy functioning are there in our homes, in our schools, throughout society. Information is what is key. The Search For Being by Bonnie Calcagno http://bookstore.xlibris.com/Products/SKU-0033743049/The-Search-for-Being.aspx - http://www.wholenewparadigm.com

Otto Friedmann Kernberg (born 10 September 1928) is a psychoanalyst and professor of psychiatry at Weill Cornell Medical College. He is most widely known for his psychoanalytic theories on borderline personality organization and narcissistic pathology. In addition, his work has been central in integrating postwar ego psychology (which was primarily developed in the United States and the United Kingdom) with Kleinian and other object relations perspectives (which was developed primarily in the United Kingdom and South America). His integrative writings were central to the development of modern object relations, a theory of mind that is perhaps the theory most widely accepted among modern psychoanalysts.
Born in Vienna, Kernberg and his family fled Nazi Germany in 1939, emigrating to Chile. He studied biology and medicine and afterwards psychiatry and psychoanalysis with the Chilean Psychoanalytic Society. He first came to the U.S. in 1959 on a Rockefeller Foundation fellowship to study research in psychotherapy with Jerome Frank at the Johns Hopkins Hospital. In 1961 he emigrated to the U.S. joining the C.F. Menninger Memorial Hospital, later became director of the hospital. He was the Supervising and Training Analyst of the Topeka Institute for Psychoanalysis, and Director of the Psychotherapy Research Project of Menninger Foundation. In 1973 he moved to New York where he was Director of the General Clinical Service of the New York State Psychiatry Institute. In 1974 he was appointed Professor of Clinical Psychiatry at the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Columbia University and Training and Supervising Analyst at the Columbia University Center for Psychoanalytic Training and Research. In 1976 he was appointed as Professor of Psychiatry at Cornell University and Director of the Institute for Personality Disorders Institute of the New York Hospital-Cornell Medical Center. He was President of the International Psychoanalytical Association from 1997 to 2001. He was married to Paulina Kernberg, a child psychiatrist and also a Cornell professor, until her death in 2006.
His principal contributions have been in the fields of narcissism, object relations theory and personality disorders. He developed a novel and useful framework for coordinating personality disorders along dimensions of structural organization and severity. He was awarded the 1972 Heinz Hartmann Award of the New York Psychoanalytic Society and Institute, the 1975 Edward A. Strecker Award from the Institute of Pennsylvania Hospital, the 1981 George E. Daniels Merit Award of the Association for Psychoanalytic Medicine.

funny baby tantrums | capricci bambino divertente | rabietas divertidos del bebé | birras engraçados do bebê
A tantrum, a temper tantrum or a hissy fit is an emotional outburst, usually associated with children or those in emotional distress, that is typically characterized by stubbornness, crying, screaming, defiance, angry ranting, a resistance to attempts at pacification and, in some cases, even hitting. Physical control may be lost; the person may be unable to remain still; and even if the "goal" of the person is met, he or she may not be calmed. A tantrum may be expressed in a tirade: a protracted, angry, or violent speech.
Toddlers
Tantrums are one of the most common forms of problematic behaviour in young children, but tend to decrease in frequency and intensity as the child grows older. For the toddler, tantrums can be considered as normal, even as gauges of a developing strength of character.
While tantrums are sometimes seen as a predictor of future anti-social behaviour, in another sense they are simply an age-appropriate sign of excessive frustration, and will diminish over time given a calm and consistent handling. Parental containment where a child cannot contain itself - rather than what the child is ostensibly demanding - may be what is really required.
Selma Fraiberg warned against "too much pressure or forceful methods of control from the outside" in child-rearing: "if we turn every instance of pants changing, treasure hunting, napping, puddle wading and garbage distribution into a governmental crisis we can easily bring on fierce defiance, tantrums, and all the fireworks of revolt in the nursery".
Some people who have neurological disorders such as autism or intellectual disability could be more prone to tantrums than others, when it happens, they throw themselves on the floor, crying, screaming and kicking as a means of getting across that things are "not right", although anyone experiencing brain damage (temporary or permanent) can suffer from tantrums. Anyone may be prone to tantrums once in a while, regardless of gender or age.
Aberrations
Freud considered that the Wolf Man's development of temper tantrums was connected with his seduction by his sister: he became "discontented, irritable and violent, took offence on every possible occasion, and then flew into a rage and screamed like a savage". Freud linked the tantrums to an unconscious need for punishment driven by feelings of guilt - something which he thought could be generalised to many other cases of childhood tantrums.
Heinz Kohut contended that tantrums were narcissistic rages, caused by the thwarting of the infant's grandiose-exhibitionist core. The blow to the inflated self-image, when a child's wishes are (however justifiably) refused, creates fury because it strikes at the feeling of omnipotence.
Jealousy over the birth of a sibling, and resulting aggression, may also provoke negativistic tantrums, as the effort at controlling the feelings overloads the child's system of self-regulation.
In later life
Thackeray claimed that in later life "you may tell a Tantrum as far as you can see one, by the distressed and dissatisfied expression of its countenance—'Tantrumical', if we may term it so".
Heinz Kohut contended that "the infant's core is likely to contain a self-centred, grandiose-exhibitionist part", and that "tantrums at being frustrated thus represent narcissistic rages" at the blow to the inflated self-image. With "a child confronted with some refusal ... regardless of its justifications, the refusal automatically provokes fury, since it offends his sense of omnipotence".
The willingness of the celebrity to throw tantrums whenever thwarted to the least degree is a kind of Acquired Situational Narcissism - tantrumical.

In this fascinating interview, the famous psychoanalyst and distinguished writer, Prof. Martin Stanton converses with Dr. Anastasios Gaitanidis about his latest book 'Making Sense'. How do we 'make sense' of our lives? How do we keep the process of 'making sense' in constant flux without fixing it to predetermined understandings? How can psychoanalysis help us to 'make sense' without assuming that we ever 'know'? How can it maintain its unique character as a form of questioning one's way of 'being in the world' without becoming a 'therapy' or a 'cure'? How can it help us celebrate our lives and our cultural environments? All of these questions (and many more) are raised and explored in this conversation with a plethora of references to Martin Stanton's unique psychoanalytic theories, his extensive work on Ferenczi and Balint, and his rich experiences of French and British psychoanalytic and academic worlds.
This video was produced with the support of the Department of Psychology and the Media Services of the University of Roehampton and is part of the activity of its Research Centre for Therapeutic Education (RCTE).

"The symptoms of Narcissistic personality disorder can be similar to the traits of individuals with strong self-esteem and confidence; differentiation occurs when the underlying psychological structures of these traits are considered pathological. Narcissists have such an elevated sense of self-worth that they value themselves as inherently better than others. Yet, they have a fragile self-esteem and cannot handle criticism, and will often try to compensate for this inner fragility by belittling or disparaging others in an attempt to validate their own self-worth. It is this sadistic tendency that is characteristic of narcissism as opposed to other psychological conditions affecting level of self-worth...
...To the extent that people are pathologically narcissistic, they can be controlling, blaming, self-absorbed, intolerant of others' views, unaware of others' needs and of the effects of their behavior on others, and insistent that others see them as they wish to be seen...
...Narcissistic individuals use various strategies to protect the self at the expense of others. They tend to devalue, derogate and blame others, and they respond to threatening feedback with anger and hostility...
...People who are overly narcissistic commonly feel rejected, humiliated and threatened when criticised. To protect themselves from these dangers, they often react with disdain, rage, and/or defiance to any slight criticism, real or imagined.[14] To avoid such situations, some narcissistic people withdraw socially and may feign modesty or humility. In cases where the narcissistic personality-disordered individual feels a lack of admiration, adulation, attention and affirmation, s/he may also manifest a desire to be feared and to be notorious" - Wikipedia.

'Megalomania is characterized by an inflated sense of self-esteem and overestimation by persons of their powers and beliefs'.[1] Historically it was used as an old name for narcissistic personality disorder prior to the latter's first use by Heinz Kohut in 1968, and is used these days as a non-clinical equivalent" - Wikipedia.
