Ross Rosenberg is in the process of changing what we know about codependency. I his book, The Human Magnet Syndrome: Why We Love People Who Hurt Us, he not only redefines codependency, but he explains why codependents predictably and reflexively fall in love with pathological narcissists.
In this video he makes the bold move by renaming Codependency to Self-Love Deficit Disorder (SLD). According to Rosenberg, codependency" is an outdated term that connotes weakness and emotional fragility, both of which are far from the truth. The new term should recognize the problem with which all codependents struggle: a deficiency of self-love. Without it, they are perpetually and hopelessly attracted to pathological narcissists. The term “Self-Love Deficit Disorder" takes the disgrace out of the name of Codependency and places the focus on the shame that perpetuates it.

Very often times codependents can be just as aggressive as they can be passive. When 'nice' codependents have had enough of being pushed around, sometimes they lash out and can sound like tyrants. The key is however, they don't leave the relationships that are causing them distress.
If you are codependent, chances are you have been both very kind, very passive, and also nasty, condescending, passive aggressive, and withholding. One of the most popular weapons of a codependent is the silent treatment. A codependent will do everything you expect them to do, but watch out! When they get tired, or sick, or have had just about enough of being pushed around, they can lash out and sound very much like a narcissist.
It is important to remember that codependents bark but don't bite. They complain but rarely if ever set boundaries. They are caught on ferris wheels of emotions, and do not know how to get off. They simply do not have the data they need in their minds to stop the insanity.
When we are dedicated to recovery, we learn to seek the middle ground. We strive towards finding inner harmony, and learn to be extremely protective of our personal vibrations. We realize that no one can really effect our vibrations unless we give others the right to.

I am frequently asked the question, "can a person be a codependent and narcissist at the same time." Codependents ask this question because of their distorted sense of self and personal boundaries. As susceptible victims of mind control and brainwashing, or gaslighting, their reality is turned against them. They are convinced that when they want something, they are behaving selfishly. By convincing the codependent that they are selfish or narcissistic when they try to defend themselves or want something from the narcissist, they sense of power and control is effectively neutralized. In this video, I bring up the question (and concept) of "What is a codependent relationship?"
It took me many decades to realize that the relationship isn't codependent--it's codependent people that are codependent. And if we have codependent issues, then we bring them into whatever relationship we are in--whether it's with a significant other, our children, parents, friends, extended family, neighbors, people we volunteer with, members of our church, etc.
A codependent relationship is one that is unbalanced. It's a dynamic where we sink ourselves so that someone else might swim--all so that the relationship will stay afloat.
The tricky part is that many codependent traits are great character traits and are celebrated and encouraged by society as a whole--so codependent people often have a hard time seeing that they have a problem. They just know that something is off. That they have a pattern of being involved in unequal or one-sided relationships with people who they either feel they "need" or who "need" them.
Codependent people tend to act in three main ways: clingy, controlling, and/or care taking.
Codependency is formed in childhood, generally due to a parent(s) who were either emotionally and/or physically unavailable--either due to addiction, alcoholism, mental illness, depression, working all the time, or their own personality disorders (Narcissism, Sociopathy, etc.).
It is important that we realize that if we have children, and if we are in a dysfunctional relationships--then they are too. We need to talk to them about healthy boundaries and standards for behavior so they don't repeat this cycle when they get older.
Disclaimer: I am not a therapist, doctor, attorney, or expert in Narcissism...or anything at all really. If anything, I am a student of life, love, behavior and behavior change.
Professionally, I worked as an advocate for victims of domestic violence at a domestic violence shelter, and currently I am a psychiatric nurse. Personally, I have been through two relationships with Narcissists, and have been able to not only survive those, but have been able to move forward and thrive.
My goal with these videos is to share all of my lessons learned, as well as to start many important conversations about abuse, and recovery with the hopes that together we can provide the clarity, closure, and healing that we all deserve.

He also reads his essay, Codependency, Don't Dance! This essay was the inspiration of both the seminar and his book, The Human Magnet Syndrome.
In Ross's book, The Human Magnet Syndrome: Why We Love People Who Hurt Us, he introduces a new psychological theory describing the irresistible love attraction between opposite personality types: Codependents and Emotional Manipulators. These relationships are "perfectly" dysfunctionally balanced.
Emotional Manipulators are pathological narcissists and Codependents are pathological givers and caretakers. Codependent sex can be confusing. It is inauthentic. It can be messy and often times is abused in relationships for different reasons. I have created two videos to because it needs to be seen from a variety of different angles.
Sometimes we females use sex as a way to manipulate a man into paying attention to us--but eventually our need to play that game ends, as we wind up feeling used--and unaware we started it!
Sometimes we act like we are far more sexual than we are--so to people please and seek our man's attention and validation. Because we are not connected to the Self--we do not know how to please ourselves so we do not know how to ask for what we want in a relationship in terms of sex. Ugh--its such a mess...

Codependency
Codependent relationships are a type of dysfunctional helping relationship where one person supports or enables another person's addiction, poor mental health, immaturity, irresponsibility, or under-achievement. Among the core characteristics of codependency, the most common theme is an excessive reliance on other people for approval and identity.
History
According to disability studies specialist Lennard J. Davis, historically, the concept of co-dependence "comes directly out of Alcoholics Anonymous, part of a dawning realization that the problem was not solely the addict, but also the family and friends who constitute a network for the alcoholic." It was subsequently broadened to cover the way "that the codependent person is fixated on another person for approval, sustenance, and so on."

The tricky part is that many codependent traits are great character traits and are celebrated and encouraged by society as a whole--so codependent people often have a hard time seeing that they have a problem. They just know that something is off. That they have a pattern of being involved in unequal or one-sided relationships with people who they either feel they "need" or who "need" them. Codependent people tend to act in three main ways: clingy, controlling, and/or care taking. Codependency is formed in childhood, generally due to a parent(s) who were either emotionally and/or physically unavailable--either due to addiction, alcoholism, mental illness, depression, working all the time, or their own personality disorders (Narcissism, Sociopathy, etc.). It is important that we realize that if we have children, and if we are in a dysfunctional relationships--then they are too. We need to talk to them about healthy boundaries and standards for behavior so they don't repeat this cycle when they get older. Disclaimer: I am not a therapist, doctor, attorney, or expert in Narcissism...or anything at all really. If anything, I am a student of life, love, behavior and behavior change. Professionally, I worked as an advocate for victims of domestic violence at a domestic violence shelter, and currently I am a psychiatric nurse. In this video, I bring up the question (and concept) of "What is a codependent relationship?"
It took me many decades to realize that the relationship isn't codependent--it's codependent people that are codependent. And if we have codependent issues, then we bring them into whatever relationship we are in--whether it's with a significant other, our children, parents, friends, extended family, neighbors, people we volunteer with, members of our church, etc.
A codependent relationship is one that is unbalanced. It's a dynamic where we sink ourselves so that someone else might swim--all so that the relationship will stay afloat.
The tricky part is that many codependent traits are great character traits and are celebrated and encouraged by society as a whole--so codependent people often have a hard time seeing that they have a problem. They just know that something is off. That they have a pattern of being involved in unequal or one-sided relationships with people who they either feel they "need" or who "need" them.
Codependent people tend to act in three main ways: clingy, controlling, and/or care taking.
Codependency is formed in childhood, generally due to a parent(s) who were either emotionally and/or physically unavailable--either due to addiction, alcoholism, mental illness, depression, working all the time, or their own personality disorders (Narcissism, Sociopathy, etc.).
It is important that we realize that if we have children, and if we are in a dysfunctional relationships--then they are too. We need to talk to them about healthy boundaries and standards for behavior so they don't repeat this cycle when they get older.
Disclaimer: I am not a therapist, doctor, attorney, or expert in Narcissism...or anything at all really. If anything, I am a student of life, love, behavior and behavior change.
Professionally, I worked as an advocate for victims of domestic violence at a domestic violence shelter, and currently I am a psychiatric nurse. Personally, I have been through two relationships with Narcissists, and have been able to not only survive those, but have been able to move forward and thrive.
My goal with these videos is to share all of my lessons learned, as well as to start many important conversations about abuse, and recovery with the hopes that together we can provide the clarity, closure, and healing that we all deserve.

Sometimes we females use sex as a way to manipulate a man into paying attention to us--but eventually our need to play that game ends, as we wind up feeling used--and unaware we started it!
Sometimes we act like we are far more sexual than we are--so to people please and seek our man's attention and validation. Because we are not connected to the Self--we do not know how to please ourselves so we do not know how to ask for what we want in a relationship in terms of sex. Ugh--its such a mess...
