About this presentation There is nothing more frightening than the moment we expose our ideas to the world. Author and vulnerability researcher Brené Brown shows us how to deal with the critics and our own self-doubt by refusing to "armor up" and shut ourselves off. "Not caring what people think," she says, "is its own kind of hustle." Instead we must "reserve a seat" for the critics and our own self-doubt. "Tell them, I see you, I hear you, but I'm going to do this anyway." Watch more videos at http://www.99u.com/videos 2:14 "Design is a function of connection. Living Brave with Brene Brown and Oprah Winfrey
Brené Brown is a research professor at the University of Houston Graduate College of Social Work. She has spent the past ten years studying vulnerability, courage, authenticity, and shame. She spent the first five years of her decade-long study focusing on shame and empathy, and is now using that work to explore a concept that she calls Wholeheartedness. She poses the questions: How do we learn to embrace our vulnerabilities and imperfections so that we can engage in our lives from a place of authenticity and worthiness? How do we cultivate the courage, compassion, and connection that we need to recognize that we are enough – that we are worthy of love, belonging, and joy?
TEDxKC talk synopsis: In our anxious world, we often protect ourselves by closing off parts of our lives that leave us feeling most vulnerable. Yet invulnerability has a price. When we knowingly or unknowingly numb ourselves to what we sense threatens us, we sacrifice an essential tool for navigating uncertain times -- joy. This talk will explore how and why fear and collective scarcity has profoundly dangerous consequences on how we live, love, parent, work and engage in relationships -- and how simple acts can restore our sense of purpose and meaning. Speaker: Dr. Brené Brown is a research professor at the University of Houston Graduate College of Social Work where she has spent the past 10 years studying courage, shame and authenticity. Show Up and Let Yourself be Seen Is vulnerability the same as weakness? “In our culture,” teaches Dr. Brené Brown, “we associate vulnerability with emotions we want to avoid such as fear, shame, and uncertainty. Yet we too often lose sight of the fact that vulnerability is also the birthplace of joy, belonging, creativity, authenticity, and love.” On The Power of Vulnerability, Dr. Brown offers an invitation and a promise - that when we dare to drop the armor that protects us from feeling vulnerable, we open ourselves to the experiences that bring purpose and meaning to our lives. Here she dispels the cultural myth that vulnerability is weakness and reveals that it is, in truth, our most accurate measure of courage. “The Power of Vulnerability is a very personal project for me,” Brené expl...

Et qu’ils me parlent d’amour. J’oublie tous mes remous. La pluie peut bien tomber Et le ciel gronder La foudre ne me fait pas peur Quand je suis avec eux. Ils sont jours de soleil. Et nuits de mon bonheur. Ainsi ce passe la vie Dans le petit chez eux. An animated illustration of Brene Brown in conversation with Krista Tippett. I came across this conversation through the recommendation of a friend years ago, and Brene Brown's stories and teachings have since helped me survive the hardest time of my life and made me feel much less alone. I have returned to them over and over and over again, always hearing something I hadn't received before. She helped me realize that we are all carrying around shame, that we're all seeking to connect but are afraid of how we'll be perceived, that most of the negative interactions we have are a direct result of our collective fear, and also that it's okay to be seen, that connecting with others will release your burden in a way you never imagined possible, and that you can somehow find the most comfort i...
