Elections for Sale September 21, 2012 Full Show
One of the reasons Moyers & Company frequently returns to the theme of money and politics is because it’s absolutely necessary to do so. Nothing corrupts our political system more than the ability of the rich and influential to spend limitless amounts of money -- often in secret -- with the intention of creating preferred political outcomes. And far from being a regulator of campaign finances, our political funding laws -- aided by a corporate-friendly Supreme Court and self-interested politicians -- only facilitate the process of empowering the few while subjugating the many.
Few understand the ways money moves in and out of our political system than campaign finance reform advocate Trevor Potter. A former chairman of the Federal Election Commission and founding president of the Campaign Legal Center, Potter was Stephen Colbert’s chief advisor when Colbert formed his own super PAC and 501 (c)(4) in a clever effort to expose the potential for chicanery behind each.
Bill and Potter discuss how American elections are bought and sold, who covers the cost, and how the rest of us pay the price.
Also on the show, a Bill Moyers Essay on the bags of money that campaigns drop on consultants and TV ads to affect and distort your point of view.

U.S. Supreme Court - Edward Lawson won it!
EDWARD LAWSON
Civil Rights Activist - ProPer Inc.
On his own he took a civil rights case to the
Supreme Court of the United States - and won.
In California cops stopped citizens without
probable cause or a reasonable suspicion
and asked for I.D.
Typically black, brown and young people.
Edward Lawson as a pedestrian
was stopped by cops and asked for I.D.
more than 15 times in an 18 month period
in San Diego County.
He kept written notes about what happened
and the cops that stopped him
and brought one combined legal action
first in California Courts and then in U.S. Federal Court.
The United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit
ruled in his favor. The San Diego Sheriff's Department
then appealed the ruling to the U.S. Supreme Court
In Kolender v. Lawson (461 U.S. 352, 1983)
the United States Supreme Court ruled that a statute (in California or in any state) authorizing a police officer to arrest a citizen merely for refusing to present identification was unconstitutionally vague.
His case has been cited in 1000s of later cases.
Alas, in 2008 stop and I.D. laws in some states are back on the books.

What’s Fueling Today’s Abortion Debate? January 25, 2013 Full Show
This year marks the 40th anniversary of Roe v. Wade, the Supreme Court decision that overturned many federal and state restrictions on a woman’s right to an abortion. But while polls show that most Americans support the decision, and that a majority -- for the first time -- believe abortion should be legal in all or most cases, anti-abortion forces show no sign of relenting. A study by the Guttmacher Institute reported that state legislatures passed 92 provisions restricting a woman’s access to reproductive health care in 2011 -- a number four times higher than the previous year.
Bill discusses the changing face of the reproductive rights movement and those it serves -- as well as the success of social conservatives on the abortion front -- with Jessica González-Rojas, Executive Director of the National Latina Institute for Reproductive Health, and Lynn Paltrow, founder and Executive Director of National Advocates for Pregnant Women.
In a second segment, Bill talks to U.S. Representative Peter Welch (D-VT) on the bi-partisan bill to repeal the $500 million mysterious Congressional giveaway to the drug company Amgen.

Republic, Lost
In an era when special interests funnel huge amounts of money into our government—driven by shifts in campaign-finance rules and brought to new levels by the Supreme Court in Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission—trust in our government has reached an all-time low. More than ever before, Americans believe that money buys results in Congress, and that business interests wield control over our legislature.
With heartfelt urgency and a keen desire for righting wrongs, Harvard law professor Lawrence Lessig takes a clear-eyed look at how we arrived at this crisis: how fundamentally good people, with good intentions, have allowed our democracy to be co-opted by outside interests, and how this exploitation has become entrenched in the system. Rejecting simple labels and reductive logic—and instead using examples that resonate as powerfully on the Right as on the Left—Lessig seeks out the root causes of our situation. He plumbs the issues of campaign financing and corporate lobbying, revealing the human faces and follies that have allowed corruption to take such a foothold in our system. He puts the issues in terms that nonwonks can understand, using real-world analogies and real human stories. And ultimately he calls for widespread mobilization and a new Constitutional Convention, presenting achievable solutions for regaining control of our corrupted—but redeemable—representational system. In this way, Lessig plots a roadmap for returning our republic to its intended greatness.
While America may be divided, Lessig vividly champions the idea that we can succeed if we accept that corruption is our common enemy and that we must find a way to fight against it. In REPUBLIC, LOST, he not only makes this need palpable and clear—he gives us the practical and intellectual tools to do something about it.
