It is mentioned in the epic Ramayana that Ram Setu was built by the son of Lord Vishwakarma when Lord Rama needed to cross the sea to reach Lanka. The bridge known as Adam's Bridge is said to be built of floating stones. The epic mentions that whenever the name of Lord Rama was written over any stone, it started to fl

Yes, the Banaras of south. Part of the Char Dham pilgrimage.
Located at the very end of the Indian Peninsula separated from mainland India. Road As well As Rail Bridge is there to commute.
Just travelling to the temple will be a fulfilling experience and to actually visit it a much cherished one.
According to Hindu mythology Lord Rama built a built a bridge over here to rescue Sita from Ravana. Till date the shorelines are also very quiet (unlike other shorelines where huge waves takes place) as it was promised to Lord Rama by the sea god to pave the way for building the bridge.
The temple along with the town is considered a holy pilgrimage site for both Shaivites andVaishnavites. Rameswaram is the closest point to reach Sri Lanka and geological evidence suggests that the Adam's Bridge was a former land connection between India and Sri Lanka. Adam's Bridge is a chain of limestone shoals, between Rameswaram and Mannar Island, off the northwestern coast of Sri Lanka. The bridge is 18 miles (30 km) long and separates the Gulf of Mannar (South West) from the Palk Strait (North East).
The name Rama's Bridge or Rama Setu (Sanskrit; setu: bridge) refers to the bridge built by the Vanara (ape men) army of Rama in Hindu mythology, which he used to reach Lanka and rescue his wife Sita from the demon king Ravana.
Rameswaram has an average elevation of 10 metres (32 feet). The island is spread across an area of 61.8 square kilometres and is in the shape of a conch. Rameswaram is significant for many Hindus as a pilgrimage to Varanasi is considered to be incomplete without a pilgrimage to Rameswaram.
The Ramanathaswamy Temple is the most notable historic landmark of the town. Located in the centre of town, Ramanathaswamy Temple is a famous Hindu temple dedicated to the god Shiva. The temple is one of the 12 Jyotirlinga shrines, where Shiva is worshipped in the form of a Jyotirlinga meaning "pillar of light".
There are sixty-four Tīrthas or Theerthams (holy water bodies) in and around Rameswaram. According to the Skanda Purana, twenty-four of them are important. Of the 24, 14 are in the form of tanks and wells within the precincts of the temple.
Pamban Bridge is a cantilever bridge on the Palk Strait that connects Rameswaram to mainland India.
How to reach:
Air: The nearest airport is at Madurai, at a distance of 154-km.
Rail: Rameshwaram is well connected by trains from all the major cities of India.
Road: State transport has a regular bus service available from the railway station to the various places in and around Rameshwaram. For local transportation taxis, auto-rickshaws, cycle-rickshaws and Tongas are available. City bus service is also available in the island.

Rameshwaram is the part of Char Dham Piligimage & considered to be one of the holiest places in India to Hindus. According to legend, this is the place from where Rama, the seventh avatar of the god Vishnu built a bridge, across the sea to Lanka to rescue his consort Sita from her abductor Ravana. Lord Rama along with Maa Sita and his brother Lakshmana, installed and worshiped the lingam (an iconic symbol of Shiva) here to expiate the sin of Brahmahatya incurred while killing of the Brahmin Ravana. According to another version, as quoted in Adhyarma Ramayana, Rama installed the lingam before the construction of the bridge to Lanka.

The Pamban Bridge :
----------------------------
The Pamban Bridge is a cantilever railway bridge on the Palk Strait which connects the town of Rameswaram on Pamban Island to mainland India. The bridge refers to both the road bridge and the cantilever railway bridge, though primarily it means the latter.
Opened in 1914, it was India's first sea bridge, and was the longest sea bridge in India till 2010. The rail bridge is for the most part, a conventional bridge resting on concrete piers, but has a double leaf bascule section midway, which can be raised to let ships and barges pass through. On 24 February 2014, the Pamban Bridge marked its 100th anniversary.
The Rameswaram bridge aka Pamban bridge is 6,776 ft (2,365 m) long and was opened for traffic in 1914. The railroad bridge is a still-functioning double-leaf bascule bridge section that can be raised to let ships pass under the bridge. About 10 ships such as cargo carriers, coast guard ships, fishing vessels and oil tankers pass through the bridge every month.
After completion of Pamban bridge, metre gauge lines were laid from Mandapam up to Pamban Station, from here the railway lines bifurcated into two directions one towards Rameshwaram about 6.25 miles (10.06 km) up and another branch line of 15 miles (24 km) terminating at Dhanushkodi. The section was opened to traffic in 1914.
The bridge consist of 143 piers and the centre span is a Scherzer rolling type lift span. It's 220 ft (67 m) long and each of 100 tonnes.
Pamban Bridge accident 1964 :
-------------------------------------------
The 1964 Rameshwaram cyclone (also known as the Dhanushkodi cyclone) was regarded as one of the most powerful storms to ever strike Sri Lanka (known then as Ceylon) on record. Early on December 23, the storm struck Ceylon near Pamban Island with winds estimated at 240 kmph (150 mph), ranking it as a modern-day super cyclonic storm.
At least 1,800 people lost their lives as a result of the cyclone.
On December 23, an estimated 7.6 m (25 ft) storm surge struck the town of Dhanuskodi on the south eastern edge of the island, submerging the town and overturning the Pamban - Dhanuskodi passenger train killing all 150 passengers on board. The town, an important transit point between India and Ceylon, was completely destroyed and has not been rebuilt since.

This is really mind blowing for some real religionist.
It is mentioned in the epic Ramayana that Ram Setu was built by the son of Lord Vishwakarma when Lord Rama needed to cross the sea to reach Lanka. The bridge known as Adam's Bridge is said to be built of floating stones. The epic mentions that whenever the name of Lord Rama was written over any stone, it started to float in the sea water.
Some such stones are said to be scattered at Rameswaram during the Tsunami

View of the Agni Theertham and Rameswaram Sri Ramanathaswamy temple. December 2012. The temple has the longest corridor among all Hindu temples in India. The temple is located in Rameshwaram, an island town in South India, considered a holy pilgrimage site for Shaivites, Vaishnavites and Smarthas. The Temple is also one of the 12 Jyothirlinga temples, where Shiva is worshipped in the form of a Jyotirlingam meaning "pillar of light". According to Ramayana, Rama, the seventh incarnation of God Vishnu, is believed to have prayed to Shiva here to absolve any sins that he might have committed during his war against the demon king Ravana in Sri Lanka. To worship Shiva, Rama wanted to have the largest lingam. He directed Hanuman, to bring the lingam from Himalayas. Since it took longer to bring the lingam, Sita (the wife of Rama) built with sand a small lingam, which is believed to be the lingam in the sanctum.

Rameshwaram Travelogue - 2015
It started off with a rather sleepy uncle using my shoulder as a pillow on the plane, and led to one of the most beautiful and yet undiscovered places I have ever seen. The stars shone brighter here, the waves rolled freely onto the serene sands of Rameswaram and the silence that envelopes your ears here at night is just bliss. The sun always beats down with a kind of heat that could smoulder you

Rameswaram, (also spelt as Ramesvaram, Rameshwaram or Ramisseram) is a town and a second grade municipality in theRamanathapuram district in the South Indian state of Tamil Nadu. It is located on Pamban Island separated from mainland India by the Pamban channel and is about 50 kilometres from Mannar Island, Sri Lanka. It is situated in the Gulf of Mannar, at the very tip of the Indian peninsula. Pamban Island, also known as Rameswaram Island, is connected to mainland India by the Pamban Bridge. Rameswaram is the terminus of the railway line from Chennai and Madurai. Together with Varanasi, it is considered to be one of the holiest places in India to Hindus, and part of the Char Dham pilgrimage.
According to Hindu mythology, this is the place from where the Hindu god Rama built a bridge, across the sea to Lanka to rescue his wife Sita from her abductor Ravana. The Ramanathaswamy Temple dedicated to the Hindu god Shiva is located at the centre of the town and is closely associated with Rama. The temple along with the town is considered a holy pilgrimage site for bothshaivas and vaishnavas.
Rameswaram is the closest point to reach Sri Lanka and geological evidence suggests that the Rama Sethu was a former land connection between India and Sri Lanka. The town has been in the news over the Sethusamudram Shipping Canal Project,Kachchatheevu, Sri Lankan Tamil refugees and attacks by the Sri Lankan navy on local fishermen for alleged cross border activities. Rameswaram is administered by a municipality established in 1994. The town covers an area of 53 km2 and had a population of 44,856 as of 2011. Tourism and fishery employ the majority of workforce in Rameswaram.

A 2.3 km train ride over the rough and raging Bay of Bengal to the Rameswaram temple island in South India. The railway bridge historically carried meter-gauge trains, but Indian Railways upgraded the bridge to carry broad-gauge trains in a project that finished Aug 12, 2007. The bridge constructed by the British over a 100 years ago and still in good condition is a marvel of engineering. Until recent times, the bridge formed Pamban island's only link with the Indian mainland. Thousands of Hindu pilgrims on pilgrimage to the holy Hindu shrine of Rameswaram traverse it everyday. The ride is fascinating, but scary when you look down at the choppy sea below, and wonder what could happen if a storm pushes the train off the bridge! This video was shot in May 2008 by the father (me!) of the cute girl sitting at the window!

The sun always beats down with a kind of heat that could smoulder you and yet it only warmed us.
As for the people - well they were all about the saying 'hot weather & warm people'.
The fear of heights was somewhat conquered and now it was time to rid that bothersome fear of water. Scuba diving was a whole different experience. Throwing yourself straight into the deep end (without a life jacket) is both ridiculously scary and a total adrenaline kick!
However, I think one of the biggest lessons I was fortunate enough to take away from this kitesurfing sabbatical, was to stop trying so hard and sometimes, let life take it's course and you'll be amazed at what you discover. Our Kite-Surfing instructor Jehan, was always trying to instil the importance of mind over muscle and it didn't quite hit home until we were leaving. Sometimes, you gotta let go, to stay in control!
The very first destination The Reel Explorer kicked off with was the kind of India we don't get to see often, the kind that ever so often takes your breath away. Just see for yourself.
