The Royal Game of Ur, also known as Twenty Squares.
This game dates back to 2600BC making it one of the oldest board games known to man at over 4500 years old and may be the predecessor to games like backgammon & Ludo. Ur was played in ancient Mesopotamia and boards have been found in the Royal Tombs of Ur, ancient burial grounds and even the great pyramids.
The Royal Game of Ur is a two player board game, the player who gets all of their pieces around the board first wins.
Players take turns to roll the dice and move their pieces around the board. Only 1 piece is allowed in any square, if you land on a square with an opponents piece then you knock it off and it goes back to the start. If you land on a square with a rosette then you can roll the dice again and have another go.
We use 4 pyramid shaped dice with a white dot painted on one corner, giving possible rolls from 0 to 4.
You will soon pick it up, and with help on we'll show you the route around the board and valid moves.
This game was played all over the world by Kings and Queens, Princess and Pharaohs as well as paupers and peasants in many different cultures, naturally the rules vary slightly from culture to culture. With this in mind we provide the option of turning off the rules so counters can be placed anywhere and at any time, obvious the computer can't play under these conditions.
Settings screens allows choice of 3 different version of the game, Royal Pyramid Ur - 7 pieces, Mummy's tomb Ur - 5 Pieces and Sarcophagus Ur - 3 pieces for that extra quick baby game.
Have fun, learn the strategy and if you ever bump into an Egyptian mummy on a dark night just whip out your phone, start up the Royal Game of Ur and challenge it to a game :-)
Younger players (anybody less then say 3000 years old, it similar to ludo.

This is a Trailer and Demo for my new game, Royal Game of Ur. This game pre-dates backgammon. It dates back at least 2500BC. It was named Royal Game of Ur because it was found in the Royal Tombs at Ur in what was once Mesopotamia. No one seems to know what it was originally called or how it was originally played. I created a version especially for the new iPad. It is a universal App so it will work on iPhone and iPod Touch as well. Now on iTunes.

In the 1920s, British Museum's archaeologist Sir Leonard Wooley (1880-1960) found a few of these board games in Mesopotamia (Southern Iraq), in fairly good condition. The FREE game featured here is a reconstruction of one of these highly treasured artefacts, now part of the Museum's collection. There is evidence that The Royal Game of Ur was the most popular game of the era. It is a typical race game, the ancestor of today's race games.

Watch as I unbox three boardgames from The Midnight Collection, a Kickstarter Project by Bibelot Games.
The three games I was given are: The Stake-Out and Wherewolf (both from The Midnight Collection) as well as The Royal Game of Ur from Bibelot Game's previous "The Reliquary Collection set.
This is my first time ever being handling any of these games in person and it was a beautiful thing. The materials of suede leather for the pouches and pieces made of Marble and Walnut Wood are absolutely gorgeous and the feel, AND SMELL, is truly exquisite. I wish you could smell what I smell in this video!

Once a coastal city near the mouth of the Euphrates on the Persian Gulf, Ur is now well inland, south of the Euphrates on its right bank, 16 kilometres (9.9 mi) from Nasiriyah.
The city's patron deity was Nanna, the Sumerian moon god, and the name of the city is in origin derived from the god's name, URIM2KI being the classical Sumerian spelling of LAK-32.UNUGKI, literally "the abode (UNUG) of Nanna (LAK-32)".
The site is marked by the ruins of the Ziggurat of Ur, which contained the shrine of Nanna, excavated in the 1930s. The temple was built in the 21st century BC (short chronology), during the reign of Ur-Nammu and was reconstructed in the 6th century BC by Nabonidus. The ruins cover an area of 1,200 metres (3,900 ft) northwest to southeast by 800 metres (2,600 ft) northeast to southwest and rise up to about 20 metres (66 ft) above the present plain level.

The Royal Game of Ur, also known as Twenty Squares.
This game dates back to 2600BC making it one of the oldest board games known to man at over 4500 years old and may be the predecessor to games like backgammon & Ludo. Ur was played in ancient Mesopotamia and boards have been found in the Royal Tombs of Ur, ancient burial grounds and even the great pyramids.
The Royal Game of Ur is a two player board game, the player who gets all of their pieces around the board first wins.
Players take turns to roll the dice and move their pieces around the board. Only 1 piece is allowed in any square, if you land on a square with an opponents piece then you knock it off and it goes back to the start. If you land on a square with a rosette then you can roll the dice again and have another go.
We use 4 pyramid shaped dice with a white dot painted on one corner, giving possible rolls from 0 to 4.
You will soon pick it up, and with help on we'll show you the route around the board and valid moves.
This game was played all over the world by Kings and Queens, Princess and Pharaohs as well as paupers and peasants in many different cultures, naturally the rules vary slightly from culture to culture. With this in mind we provide the option of turning off the rules so counters can be placed anywhere and at any time, obvious the computer can't play under these conditions.
Settings screens allows choice of 3 different version of the game, Royal Pyramid Ur - 7 pieces, Mummy's tomb Ur - 5 Pieces and Sarcophagus Ur - 3 pieces for that extra quick baby game.
Have fun, learn the strategy and if you ever bump into an Egyptian mummy on a dark night just whip out your phone, start up the Royal Game of Ur and challenge it to a game :-)
Younger players (anybody less then say 3000 years old, it similar to ludo.

The materials of suede leather for the pouches and pieces made of Marble and Walnut Wood are absolutely gorgeous and the feel, AND SMELL, is truly exquisite. I wish you could smell what I smell in this video!
