Game studies or "gaming theory" is an academic discipline that deals with the critical study of games. More specifically, it focuses on game design, players, and their role in society and culture. Game studies is an inter-disciplinary field with researchers and academics from a multitude of other areas such as computer science, psychology, sociology, anthropology, arts & literature, media studies, communication, theology, and more.
Like other media disciplines, such as television studies and film studies, game studies often involves textual analysis and audience theory. However, game studies tends to employ more diverse methodologies than these other branches, drawing from both social science and humanities approaches.
Prior to the late-20th century, the academic study of games was rare and limited to fields such as history and anthropology. For example, in the early 1900s Stewart Culin wrote a comprehensive catalog of gaming implements and games from Native American tribes north of Mexico while Johan Huizinga and Roger Caillois explored the importance of games and play as a basic human activity that helps define culture. As the videogame revolution took off in the early 1980s, so did academic interest in games, resulting in a field that draws on diverse methodologies and schools of thought.
One too many goals
That measure out your worth
To seek your weight in gold
Sat by the ivory sill
The further out you look
The further out you'll be
It's not enough to set the terms
If nothing ventured, nothing earned
Though odds are set against
In time, I'll belong to you
It's how it's meant to be
Settled on your own
Sweeping dust from stones
With a letter home
Back where the hour's long
The simplest things invite a thrill
If just by noticing at will
It's not enough to set the terms
If nothing ventured, nothing earned
It's how it's always been
E onde a sorte há de te levar
Saiba, o caminho é o fim, mais que chegar
E queira o dia ser gentil
À tua mão aberta pra quem é
In time, I'll belong to you
That's how it's meant to be
Shoulder to shoulder
Amused, but not advanced
He, she
You, me
It's all just circumstance
Eager, hopeful
Content to play the friend
Timid advances
With mutual regret
She can't always be wrong
He can't always be right
Not a matter of choice
Just a matter of time
Till they know where they stand
Once they reach the end
Awkward choices
With smiles from ear to ear
A fated union
That won't survive the year
Timeless series
Of blameless accidents
Oh, the stubborn cycle
Of inherited mistakes
She can't always be wrong
He can't always be right
Not a matter of choice
Just a matter of time
Till they know where they stand
Once they've reached the end
(2x)
I'll pay mind where I place my trust
When the desert ends
Spending time
Convinced that it's mine with her
Just to keep her out of mind
Still I'll take care to see
Which way the wind blows
Notice how her hair curls
Pay no mind
To the clown who sits to your side
Content to yield despite pride
He is a fool to assume you'd spare a thought
I'm a thieve who's just been caught
And I don't find it funny anymore
And so I won't play the part
I played before
Oh, no...
Not to you
I don't see you laughing anyway
And so I won't play a part
In your mistake
No way
I bet you're wondering how i knew
That this would come to an end
He stole your heart from you
So you tossed me out to the wind
I keep pretending not to care
But the winter scent in her hair
Compels my hands to do
The things my heart wouldn't dare
I'll keep holding on to you
See no use perfecting lives with strangers
If only you, if only now
And in the twilight of this hour
When fools are mistaken for men
This shadow suits me well
My regrets I'll face in the end
I'll keep holding on to you
See no use perfecting lives with strangers
If only you, if only now
I'll keep holding on to you
See no use perfecting love with strangers
Only when the goal
Is unattainable
Do I start to feel
Like I'm losing myself
And this deep secret
That hasn't come out yet
Is buried down deep with the rest
I can't coerce you into this one
Jealousy lay all your spells to bed
I'll choose unloved instead
If only songs were sung
To guide the doubtful ones
Beyond the rough
When not as much is good enough
Oh, if you find yourself
Amongst the lonely ones
I will be waiting here
With open arms
I can't coerce you into this one
Jealousy lay all yours spells to bed
One thought has me turning back
A dozen point the other way
We act upon desire
To each a hand for hire
And patience isn't worth the wait
You've got knives in your eyes
You would be happy not to change your mind
I can't defend you truly
When you worry about smoke instead of putting out the
fire
And if we work it out
Chances abound
We'd be standing our ground
For no one's better sake
(Better say) Goodbye
What are we waiting for?
What are we waiting for?
What are we waiting for?
What are we waiting for?
What are we waiting for?
What are we waiting for?
What are we waiting for?
How faint might that light become
In focus, but from miles away?
Although my position
Just gives you amnunition
Be certain that I know my place
So is this how it ends?
Oh with a whimper in the place of a bang
I can't defend you truly
When I worry about smoke instead of putting out the
fire
And if we work it out
Chances are bound
We'd be standing around
For no one's better sake
(Better say) Goodbye
We would be friends
If we tried again
I'll take second place
Just to end the race
For no one's better sake
Read from start to end
And again
Oh, the fearlessness of thoughts in print
Strips the chord of a sensible word
And what’s worse?
She left her mark, indelible
Oh the nature of her scripted verse
Keeps my eyes
Set on the page
And it says
Frankly dear I’m forced to give it up
Tried my hand and now I’ve had enough
Even though we have to say goodbye
Keep me in mind
Keep me in mind
Keep me in mind
Blamed in advance
For the past
With no bearing on a present tense
All that's left
Are the claims that she made
When she said
Oh dear someday
You'll learn to be
Someone better
Fit to pursue me
But ‘til then
We’ll call it the end
As she adds
Frankly dear the drifters had it right
Stayed the afternoon and left at night
Even though we have to say goodbye
Keep me in mind
Keep me in mind
Keep me in mind
Mama, someday you'll be so proud of me
You'll see me hanging in the New York Gallery
Someday, I'm gonna draw from the left side of my brain
People gonna ask "is it brilliant or plain?"
But as long as I don't know
How to hang a warhol
I'll keep sketching birds
That are all like her
Very simple and true
Like you've known me to do
And if you like'em, yeaah
But if you don't it's not bad
Cause I really don't care
Said, papa someday I'm gonna write a symphony
Fourty-eight piece band all dressed up like me
I said I'll write someday the saddest of all songs
I'm gonna chill the marrow in their bones
But as long as I can't get
Into Carnegie Hall
I'll keep writing songs
That are all my own
Very simple and dumb
Like I always have done
And if you like'em, yeaah
But if you don't, too bad
Cause it's all I have
Ever since I met her
I keep thinking, God
How great it is to play a guitar
This way I feel that she's always with me
Cause every other song
Underneath its tongue
Tempo a gente tem
Quanto a gente dá
Corre o que correr,
Custe o que custar...
Tempo a gente dá
Quanto a gente tem
Custa o que correr,
Corre o que custar...
O tempo que eu perdi
Só agora eu sei
Aprender a dar
Foi o que ganhei
E ando ainda atrás
Desse tempo ter
O de não correr,
E ele me encontrar,
Ah... não se mexer!
Beija-flor no ar
O rio fica lá
A água que correu
Chega na maré,
Ele vira mar...
Como se morrer
Fosse desaguar!
Derramar no céu,
Se purificar...
Ah... deixar pra trás,
Sais e minerais,
Margarita has a strange appeal
sways between suthers on a broken heel
Of course her desires they always mess up
She rather be scarred than be scarred with love
In conversation she often content
Costumes builds customs that have all dead-ends
She found her courage in a change of scene
The sunday social would be short it's queen
All her best years spent distracted
By this tired re-enaccments
With the right stuff
she would try her chances
Somewhere else
There he is a step outside of view
Presiding the words he hope she might persuit
Night upon night of faithful lie shore*
He only convinces legs across the floor
Please don't watch me dancing
oh no don't watch me dancing
Something changes when she glances
I'll have to teach you what romance is
With the right stuff
they tried their chances
Somewhere else
Please don't watch me dancing
don't watch me dancing
Please don't watch me dancing
Take advantage of the season
don't take off your overcoat
the spirits will lift
of those young men you provoke
but I'll be laughing, knowing I will take you home
there ain't no lover like the one I've got
ain't no lover like the one I've got
she and I and a brand new start
I gotta give all my love
all this time they had me thinking
love's a boat that's long been sinking
but you made the claim
that taking a chance is embracing the change
I count my blessings knowing you will take me home
there ain't no lover like the one I've got
ain't no lover like the one I've got
she and I and a brand new start
I gotta give all my love
I've got time to hold my own
what's a day when the years are on their way
I gotta say
there ain't no lover like the one I've got
ain't no lover like the one I've got
she and I and a brand new start
ain't no lover like the one I've got
Read from start to end
