Here is part one of a detailed two part unauthorized video examination of the life and films of Danish auteur, Nicholas Winding Refn.
WARNING: Major to minor spoilers of Refn's films abound, as well as profanity and violence.
In this episode, we'll examine Refn's childhood, burgeoning cinematic obsession, and his first four feature films; Pusher, Bleeder, Fear X, and Pusher II: With Blood on my Hands, as well as the events surrounding the making of each.
Be sure to check out part two, where we look at Pusher 3, Miss Marple, Bronson, Valhalla Rising, and finally, Drive, as well as what the future holds for Refn.
I used a vast array of sources for this video, including director's commentary tracks for the three Pusher films, the many, many interviews Refn has given in the course of his career that are available in print and online, and two feature length documentaries of Refn's career; Gambler (2006) by Phie Ambo, and NWR (2012) by Laurent Duroche. This is the first time all of this information has been put together in one place.

Nous avons rencontré Nicolas Winding Refn lors de son passage à Paris. Le réalisateur danois, auteur de "Drive", de "Pusher" et de "Bronson" (entre autres), est venu présenter son dernier livre, l'Art du Regard. L'occasion, pour Clique, de provoquer une première rencontre entre le réalisateur et Kavinsky, auteur de Nightcall - le morceau qui ouvre "Drive". Débarrassé de son avatar, le compositeur, qui ne se montre jamais devant les caméras, nous a également fait l'honneur de nous rejoindre.
Mouloud Achour : "J'aimerais te parler de deux choses : l'amour et la violence. Là où les gens voient de la violence dans tes films, je vois de l'amour. Dans "Only God Forgives", ou "Drive", j'ai vu une histoire d'amour. Pour moi, c'est un mec prêt à défoncer tout le monde par amour. Est-ce que c'est ta façon de définir l'amour ?"
Nicolas Winding Refn : "Ce qui me stimule, c'est ce que je voudrais voir. Parfois, ça peut être très violent. Ou ça peut parler du fait de tomber amoureux".
"Je pense que "Drive" parle d'un homme qui veut préserver l'innocence. La violence devient pour lui un moyen d'affirmer son identité, de protéger l'innocence et l'amour".
Mouloud : "Parle-moi de Ryan Gosling".
"Ryan est mon alter ego. C'est le seul homme qui m’ait jamais embrassé. C'est quelque chose... Il est unique. Il est un prolongement de moi-même, comme des jumeaux séparés à la naissance"
Kavinsky entre dans la pièce. Drive est sorti en 2011, mais c'est la première fois que les deux hommes se rencontrent. "J''étais à Los Angeles, en train de monter "Drive" chez moi", se souvient Nicolas Winding. "On écoutait toutes ces musiques. Et puis il y a eu "Nightcall". J'ai choisi ce morceau, sans hésitation".
"Nightcall" était la musique qui allait ouvrir le film.
Mouloud (à Nicolas Winding) : "Est-ce que tu connaissais l'univers de Kavinsky avant ? Nightcall, c'est l'histoire d'un fantôme qui conduit une voiture".
"Non, je ne connaissais pas l'histoire. J'ai juste beaucoup aimé la musique. Je la réécoutais encore et encore, jusqu'à décider de jouer le morceau entier dans le film. Et maintenant que tu me dis de quoi elle parle, c'était prédestiné. Presque comme si Dieu l'avait prévu".
Mouloud (à Kavinsky) : "Comment as-tu réagi, quand tu as entendu ta musique dans le film ?"
"Je suis allé au cinéma sans savoir exactement quand allait arriver mon morceau. Et je me suis rendu compte que c'était le générique de début". Je me rappelle avoir crié dans la salle. Et quelqu'un derrière moi a dit "Asseyez-vous ! On veut voir le film !"
Mouloud : "Dernière question pour vous deux : quelle est votre définition d'une clique ?"
Kavinsky : "Pour moi, c'est le clic qu'on utilise en musique pour garder le tempo. C'est tout".
Nicolas Winding : "Pour moi, c'est quand deux personnes accrochent. De belles choses arrivent".
Mouloud : "Vous venez de cliquer tous les deux".
Nicolas Winding : "Ça nous aura pris des années !"

Having just made his biggest splash in Hollywood with the incredible 'Drive,' Nicolas Winding Refn is a director I'm incredibly excited to see getting wide acclaim. Ever since his early features such as 'Pusher' and 'Bleeder,' Refn's films have boasted a dark and suspenseful tone which he has managed to develop and perfect across his eight features. This edition of 'The Works' was an interesting one to cut since I wasn't familiar with many of Refn's films prior to editing. However I feel that I did justice to the films of one of todays most talented emerging directors.

Nicolas Winding Refn (born 29 September 1970) is a Danish film director, screenwriter and producer. Winding Refn moved to the United States in 1981 and graduated from the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in 1993. He is famous for directing the Pusher trilogy. His film Drive premiered in competition at the 2011 Cannes Film Festival where it won him the Best Director Award.
Winding Refn was born in Copenhagen and raised partly in New York. He is married to actress Liv Corfixen, with whom he has two children. His parents are Danish film director and editor Anders Refn and cinematographer Vibeke Winding. His half-brother is Danish singer Kasper Winding.

Having just made his biggest splash in Hollywood with the incredible 'Drive,' Nicolas Winding Refn is a director I'm incredibly excited to see getting wide acclaim. Ever since his early features such as 'Pusher' and 'Bleeder,' Refn's films have boasted a dark and suspenseful tone which he has managed to develop and perfect across his eight features. This edition of 'The Works' was an interesting one to cut since I wasn't familiar with many of Refn's films prior to editing. However I feel that I did justice to the films of one of todays most talented emerging directors. Nous avons rencontré Nicolas Winding Refn lors de son passage à Paris. Le réalisateur danois, auteur de "Drive", de "Pusher" et de "Bronson" (entre autres), est venu présenter son dernier livre, l'Art du Regard. Dans "Only God Forgives", ou "Drive", j'ai vu une histoire d'amour. Pour moi, c'est un mec prêt à défoncer tout le monde par amour. Est-ce que c'est ta façon de définir l'amour ?"
Nicolas Winding Refn : "Ce qui me stimule, c'est ce que je voudrais voir. Parfois, ça peut être très violent. Ou ça peut parler du fait de tomber amoureux".
"Je pense que "Drive" parle d'un homme qui veut préserver l'innocence. La violence devient pour lui un moyen d'affirmer son identité, de protéger l'innocence et l'amour".
Mouloud : "Parle-moi de Ryan Gosling".
"Ryan est mon alter ego. C'est le seul homme qui m’ait jamais embrassé. C'est quelque chose... Il est unique. Il est un prolongement de moi-même, comme des jumeaux séparés à la naissance"
Kavinsky entre dans la pièce. Drive est sorti en 2011, mais c'est la première fois que les deux hommes se rencontrent. "J''étais à Los Angeles, en train de monter "Drive" chez moi", se souvient Nicolas Winding. "On écoutait toutes ces musiques. Et puis il y a eu "Nightcall". J'ai choisi ce morceau, sans hésitation".
"Nightcall" était la musique qui allait ouvrir le film.
Mouloud (à Nicolas Winding) : "Est-ce que tu connaissais l'univers de Kavinsky avant ? Nightcall, c'est l'histoire d'un fantôme qui conduit une voiture".
"Non, je ne connaissais pas l'histoire. J'ai juste beaucoup aimé la musique. Je la réécoutais encore et encore, jusqu'à décider de jouer le morceau entier dans le film. Et maintenant que tu me dis de quoi elle parle, c'était prédestiné. Presque comme si Dieu l'avait prévu".
Mouloud (à Kavinsky) : "Comment as-tu réagi, quand tu as entendu ta musique dans le film ?"
"Je suis allé au cinéma sans savoir exactement quand allait arriver mon morceau. Et je me suis rendu compte que c'était le générique de début". Je me rappelle avoir crié dans la salle. Et quelqu'un derrière moi a dit "Asseyez-vous ! On veut voir le film !"
Mouloud : "Dernière question pour vous deux : quelle est votre définition d'une clique ?"
Kavinsky : "Pour moi, c'est le clic qu'on utilise en musique pour garder le tempo. C'est tout".
Nicolas Winding : "Pour moi, c'est quand deux personnes accrochent. De belles choses arrivent".
Mouloud : "Vous venez de cliquer tous les deux".
Nicolas Winding : "Ça nous aura pris des années !"

Nous avons rencontré Nicolas Winding Refn lors de son passage à Paris. Le réalisateur danois, auteur de "Drive", de "Pusher" et de "Bronson" (entre autres), est venu présenter son dernier livre, l'Art du Regard. L'occasion, pour Clique, de provoquer une première rencontre entre le réalisateur et Kavinsky, auteur de Nightcall - le morceau qui ouvre "Drive". Débarrassé de son avatar, le compositeur, qui ne se montre jamais devant les caméras, nous a également fait l'honneur de nous rejoindre.
Mouloud Achour : "J'aimerais te parler de deux choses : l'amour et la violence. Là où les gens voient de la violence dans tes films, je vois de l'amour. Dans "Only God Forgives", ou "Drive", j'ai vu une histoire d'amour. Pour moi, c'est un mec prêt à défoncer tout le monde par amour. Est-ce que c'est ta façon de définir l'amour ?"
Nicolas Winding Refn : "Ce qui me stimule, c'est ce que je voudrais voir. Parfois, ça peut être très violent. Ou ça peut parler du fait de tomber amoureux".
"Je pense que "Drive" parle d'un homme qui veut préserver l'innocence. La violence devient pour lui un moyen d'affirmer son identité, de protéger l'innocence et l'amour".
Mouloud : "Parle-moi de Ryan Gosling".
"Ryan est mon alter ego. C'est le seul homme qui m’ait jamais embrassé. C'est quelque chose... Il est unique. Il est un prolongement de moi-même, comme des jumeaux séparés à la naissance"
Kavinsky entre dans la pièce. Drive est sorti en 2011, mais c'est la première fois que les deux hommes se rencontrent. "J''étais à Los Angeles, en train de monter "Drive" chez moi", se souvient Nicolas Winding. "On écoutait toutes ces musiques. Et puis il y a eu "Nightcall". J'ai choisi ce morceau, sans hésitation".
"Nightcall" était la musique qui allait ouvrir le film.
Mouloud (à Nicolas Winding) : "Est-ce que tu connaissais l'univers de Kavinsky avant ? Nightcall, c'est l'histoire d'un fantôme qui conduit une voiture".
"Non, je ne connaissais pas l'histoire. J'ai juste beaucoup aimé la musique. Je la réécoutais encore et encore, jusqu'à décider de jouer le morceau entier dans le film. Et maintenant que tu me dis de quoi elle parle, c'était prédestiné. Presque comme si Dieu l'avait prévu".
Mouloud (à Kavinsky) : "Comment as-tu réagi, quand tu as entendu ta musique dans le film ?"
"Je suis allé au cinéma sans savoir exactement quand allait arriver mon morceau. Et je me suis rendu compte que c'était le générique de début". Je me rappelle avoir crié dans la salle. Et quelqu'un derrière moi a dit "Asseyez-vous ! On veut voir le film !"
Mouloud : "Dernière question pour vous deux : quelle est votre définition d'une clique ?"
Kavinsky : "Pour moi, c'est le clic qu'on utilise en musique pour garder le tempo. C'est tout".
Nicolas Winding : "Pour moi, c'est quand deux personnes accrochent. De belles choses arrivent".
Mouloud : "Vous venez de cliquer tous les deux".
Nicolas Winding : "Ça nous aura pris des années !"

Having just made his biggest splash in Hollywood with the incredible 'Drive,' Nicolas Winding Refn is a director I'm incredibly excited to see getting wide acclaim. Ever since his early features such as 'Pusher' and 'Bleeder,' Refn's films have boasted a dark and suspenseful tone which he has managed to develop and perfect across his eight features. This edition of 'The Works' was an interesting one to cut since I wasn't familiar with many of Refn's films prior to editing. However I feel that I did justice to the films of one of todays most talented emerging directors.

Last week at The CineFamily in Los Angeles, Milan Records held an album release party for Nicolas Winding Refn’s Bronson soundtrack. While the CD was available when the film was first released, this is the first time you can own a vinyl edition of the soundtrack that features everything from Glass Candy to Pet Shop Boys, to Giuseppe Verdi to Anton Brucker. The double LP is now available and has new artwork by All Media. In addition to releasing his own soundtracks on vinyl, Refn has partnered up with Milan Records for a series that’s called “Nicolas Winding Refn Presents” and the line will release limited edition soundtracks on vinyl with new artwork. Last week at The CineFamily in Los Angeles, Milan Records held an album release party for Nicolas Winding Refn’s Bronson soundtrack. While the CD was available when the film was first released, this is the first time you can own a vinyl edition of the soundtrack that features everything from Glass Candy to Pet Shop Boys, to Giuseppe Verdi to Anton Brucker. The double LP is now available and has new artwork by All Media.
In addition to releasing his own soundtracks on vinyl, Refn has partnered up with Milan Records for a series that’s called “Nicolas Winding Refn Presents” and the line will release limited edition soundtracks on vinyl with new artwork. Shortly before the party started, I sat down with Refn for an exclusive video interview. He talked about how he partnered up with Milan, future vinyl releases, what he collects, his next film The Neon Demon, what it was like working with Keanu Reeves, how he’s working on the most expensive poster book ever produced that will be coming out this year, Tyler Stout’s Drive poster, and a lot more.
