The New World Summit on Stateless Democracy – Video Online

The New World Summit on Stateless Democracy took place at Utrecht University in the Netherlands recently, bringing together activists and intellectuals from around the globe to explore the possibilities for uncoupling democracy from the nation-state. Speakers from a variety of movements across the globe converged to discuss radical democracy, nationalism, and especially the Kurdish liberation struggle that has captured the imagination of the world.

Many of these exciting discussions can now [...]

Debbie Bookchin in The Nation on Turkey’s repression of the Kurdish liberation movement

Debbie Bookchin in The Nation on Turkey’s repression of the Kurdish liberation movement

Debbie Bookchin has penned a powerful new article for The Nation on Erdogan’s current war against the Kurdish movement in Southeastern Turkey, and why the US and EU must act now to stop the bloodshed.

“Why would Erdogan resume the peace process when his NATO allies give him tacit permission to brutalize his own people in the name of combating terrorism? As long as [...]

Assemblies and Elections: Questions for the Left

Author and acclaimed scholar of horizontalist movements, Marina Sitrin, reflects on discussions at the recent Left Forum in New York City. She encourages those who’ve participated in movements such as Occupy Wall Street, 15-M in Spain, and Gezi Park in Istanbul to familiarize themselves with municipalist ideas to better address the huge organizational challenges faced by the global left. This article originally appeared on TeleSur English:

How can we change society so as to run it [...]

On David Harvey’s engagement with Bookchin’s ideas

From an early 2000s ISE alum, writing from Berlin:

I don’t know if others are aware of this text, so I am forwarding it along. It is from David Harvey, who, has begun to engage with Murray’s ideas about libertarian municipalism in a serious and constructive way. He began the dialogue in his book Rebel Cities, where he wrote that libertarian municipalism was “by far the most sophisticated radical proposal to deal with the creation and collective use of the commons at a variety of scales.”

In his new text, “Listen Anarchist!”, he continues to engage with Murray’s lasting contribution to [...]

Toward a new municipal agenda in Spain

From ROAR Magazine, an article by Carlos Delclós, a sociology researcher in Barcelona. Here’s an excerpt:
Radical municipal politics is not an altogether new concept, especially not in Spain. In Catalonia, the Popular Unity Candidacies of the left-wing independence movement have had a notable presence in smaller towns for several years (they also quadrupled their 2011 results on Sunday, for what it’s worth). At the southern end of the country, the Andalusian village of Marinaleda is a well-documented experiment in utopian communism that has been going on for over three decades now.
In fact, the so-called father of libertarian [...]

New book: Social Ecology and Social Change

In September last year New Compass organized a conference in collaboration with the University of Oslo called Ecological Challenges. Some of the questions we asked were:  How can we create a society that is ecological as well as egalitarian? How can we develop new forms of activism that are constructive as well as confrontational? How can we work for genuine social change and simultaneously prevent ecological destruction and improve people’s lives in today’s world?
The results of these discussions are now gathered in one book! Many people associated with the ISE in Vermont, both past and present, are among [...]

Ursula LeGuin on Murray Bookchin

"Capitalism’s grow-or-die imperative stands radically at odds with ecology’s imperative of interdependence and limit. The two imperatives can no longer coexist with each other; nor can any society founded on the myth that they can be reconciled hope to survive. Either we will establish an ecological society or society will go under for everyone, irrespective of his or her status."

New collection of Murray Bookchin’s political essays

From Athens to New York, recent mass movements around the world have challenged austerity and authoritarianism with expressions of real democracy. For more than forty years, Murray Bookchin developed these democratic aspirations into a new left politics, influencing political thinkers and social movements alike.
