The 2023 Eddie Aikau Big Wave Invitational at Waimea Bay
World's most iconic big-wave event returns to Waimea Bay.
WHAT ARE WE WATCHING?
The word “unique” is thrown around a lot. In this case, it fits. There is nothing like the Eddie Aikau Big Wave Invitational, inside surfing or out. The event has been placed on a three-month hold every Hawaiian winter for the past 34 years, and run only nine times — only when Waimea Bay offers itself up at 20 feet or bigger for a full day of surfing.
It is run in the memory of Eddie: fantastic surfer, Hawaiian all the way through, the first lifeguard in North Shore history, who vanished in an impossibly heroic rescue effort off the capsized double hull canoe Hokule’a in March 1978. Surfers attend the event by invitation from the Aikau family, and there’s no greater honor in surfing.
This year, a total of 4...

The Eddie Aikau Story
Edward Ryon Makuahanai Aikau (Kahului, Hawaii, May 4, 1946 – March 17, 1978) was a Hawaiian lifeguard and surfer. As the first lifeguard at Waimea Bay on the island of Oahu, he saved over 500 people and became famous for surfing the big Hawaiian surf, winning several awards including the 1977 Duke Kahanamoku Invitational Surfing Championship.
Born in Kahului, Maui, Aikau was the third child of Solomon and Henrietta Aikau. The words Makua Hanai in Eddie Aikau's full name means feeding parent, an adoptive, nurturing, fostering parent, in the Hawaiian language.
He was a descendant of Hewahewa, the kahuna nui (high priest) of King Kamehameha I and his successor Kamehameha II. Aikau first learned how to surf at Kahului Harbor on its shorebreak.

2023 Eddie Aikau Invitational Highlights: Best Waves in Historic Surf at Waimea Bay
What will we remember most about January 22, 2023 at Waimea Bay? Everyone who took part, whether it be watching from afar via our live broadcast, standing on the beach with jaws hanging down to the sand, or in the water trying to hunt — we’ll all have different memories.
This year, a total of 40 surfers have been so honored. (See our list below.)
The event format is simple: Two rounds of eight-person heats are held, so everyone gets to surf twice. Each surfer’s top four rides count toward a total score. Those top four rides can come from one or both heats, so a wobbly first heat isn’t the end of the world.
But it wouldn’t be anyway. Just paddling out for one of these heats is prized by every surfer who’s ever taken part.
There’s been nine winners of the Eddie so far. Nobody has ever won it twice.
Former winners:
Denton Miyamura (1987), Clyde Aikau (1986), Keone Downing (1990), Noah Johnson (1999), Ross Clarke-Jones (2001), Kelly Slater (2002), Bruce Irons (2004), Greg Long (2009), John Florence (2016)

He moved to Oʻahu with his family in 1959, and at the age of 16 left school and started working at the Dole pineapple cannery; the paycheck allowed Aikau to buy his first surfboard.
In 1968, he became the first lifeguard hired by the City & County of Honolulu to work on the North Shore. The City & County of Honolulu gave Aikau the task of covering all of the beaches between Sunset and Haleiwa.
Not one life was lost while he served as lifeguard of Waimea Bay, as he braved waves that often reached 30 feet (9.1 m) high or more. In 1971, Aikau was named Lifeguard of the Year. On February 28, 1978, TV producer John Orland was the last person Aikau rescued at Waimea Bay.
Lost at sea
In 1978, the Polynesian Voyaging Society was seeking volunteers for a 30-day, 2,500-mile (4,000 km) journey to follow the ancient route of the Polynesian migration between the Hawaiian and Tahitian island chains. Aikau joined the voyage as a crew member.
The double-hulled voyaging canoe Hōkūleʻa left the Hawaiian islands on March 16, 1978. It developed a leak in one of its hulls and later capsized about twelve miles (19 km) south of the island of Molokaʻi.
In an attempt to get help, Aikau paddled toward Lānaʻi on his surfboard. Although the rest of the crew were later rescued by the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Cape Corwin, Aikau's body was never found.
He removed his life jacket since it was hindering his paddling of the surfboard. The ensuing search for Aikau was the largest air-sea search in Hawaiian history.
A true Hawaiian legend.

What will we remember most about January 22, 2023 at Waimea Bay? Everyone who took part, whether it be watching from afar via our live broadcast, standing on the beach with jaws hanging down to the sand, or in the water trying to hunt — we’ll all have different memories. But when it comes down to winning the day, here’s the waves that really counted. As you watch, bear in mind how the event is judged in the context of the Bay’s unique complexities: the panel is looking for wave size, critical positioning on takeoff (ie steep and deep), control of the drop, and successful “make”, ie completion of the ride through and past the wave base. Rides into the shorebreak, while serious crowd-pleasers, aren’t big points-adders: as you’ll note from this selection, the big points come from those first 10-20 seconds of the ride — which also relies on the decision to go in the first place. (Also worth noting: waves are scored out of a possible 30, rather than 10. Also, Mark Healey’s wave above was so close — 29.6 — that we had to include here.)
It was an amazing day, however you saw it. We hope you enjoy these seven moments of magic.
Results (scores are out of a possible 90.)
1. Luke Shepardson 89.1
2. John John Florence 84.2
3. Mark Healey 82.3
4. Billy Kemper 79.5
5. Kai Lenny 76.7
6. Ezekiel Lau 75.5
7. Landon McNamara 75.3
8. Keali’i Malama 72.5
9. Lucas Chianca 71.7
10. Ross Clarke-Jones 70
11. Tyler Larronde
Wave of the Day: Zeke Lau.
Waves ridden in order:
Landon McNamara 75.3 | (00:00-0:36) Round 1 Heat 3
Ezekiel Lau 75.5 | (0:37-1:21) Round 1 Heat 4
Luke Shepardson 89.1 | (1:22-1:49) Round 1 Heat 5
John John Florence 84.2 | (1:50-2:23) Round 2 Heat 1
Mark Healey 82.3 | (2:24-3:33) Round 2 Heat 2
Tyler Larronde | (3:34-4:00) Round 2 Heat 5
