Dunk, Dunks, or Dunking may refer to:
Henry Dunks, (1882– 1955), Australian politician
A slam dunk, also dunk or dunk shot, is a type of basketball shot that is performed when a player jumps in the air, controls the ball(s) above the horizontal plane of the rim, and scores by putting the ball directly through the basket with one or both hands. This is considered a normal field goal attempt; if successful it is worth two points. Such a shot was known as a "dunk shot" until the term "slam dunk" was coined by former Los Angeles Lakers announcer Chick Hearn.
The slam dunk is the most efficient basketball shot. Moreover, it is a crowd-pleaser. Thus, the maneuver is often extracted from the basketball game and showcased in slam dunk contests. Perhaps the most popular is the NBA Slam Dunk Contest held during the annual NBA All-Star Weekend. The seminal incarnation of the NBA Slam Dunk Contest was held during the half-time of the 1976 American Basketball Association All-Star Game.
Dunking was banned in the NCAA from 1967 to 1976. Many people have attributed this to the dominance of the then-college phenomenon Lew Alcindor (now known as Kareem Abdul-Jabbar); the no-dunking rule is sometimes referred to as the "Lew Alcindor rule."
Kenneth "Kenny" "Sky" Walker (born August 18, 1964) is an American former professional basketball player, primarily for the New York Knicks of the NBA. Walker played college basketball at the University of Kentucky. He is currently a radio host for WVLK in Lexington, Kentucky.
Walker was born in Roberta, Georgia. After being named Mr. Basketball in his home state of Georgia in 1982, Walker chose to play collegiately at the University of Kentucky. Walker had a very successful college career, being named to an All-SEC team four times and the All-American team twice. Walker's 1984 Kentucky team made it to the Final Four of the NCAA Tournament before losing to the Georgetown Hoyas.
In 1986, Walker set a record by scoring 11 times on 11 field goal attempts in the NCAA tournament.
Walker was selected with the 5th pick of the 1986 NBA Draft by the New York Knicks. Walker played for five coaches in five years with the Knicks. On February 11, 1989, Walker won the NBA Slam Dunk Contest, competing three days after the death of his father. He also secured 3rd place in the 1990 contest. However, his success on the court was dwindling, and knee injuries forced him to leave the NBA and join the ACB league in Spain.
Clyde Austin "The Glide" Drexler (born June 22, 1962) is an American retired professional basketball swingman. During his career, he was a ten-time All-Star, and named one of the 50 Greatest Players in NBA History. Drexler won an Olympic gold medal in 1992 as part of the 1992 United States men's Olympic basketball team ("The Dream Team") and an NBA Championship in 1995 with the Houston Rockets. He is a two-time Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame inductee (being inducted 2004 for his individual career, and in 2010 as a member of the "Dream Team") He currently serves as a color commentator for Rockets home games.
Born in New Orleans, Louisiana, Drexler lived in the South Park area in Houston, Texas, and attended Ross Sterling High School in Houston, where he was a classmate of tennis player Zina Garrison. As a sophomore, he made the varsity baseball team, and of course tried out for the basketball team but failed to make the cut. Drexler played as a 6 ft 6 in (1.98 m) center as a senior. He began receiving attention from college coaches following a 34-point, 27-rebound performance against Sharpstown High School during a 1979 Christmas tournament.
The NBA Slam Dunk Contest (officially known as the Verizon Slam Dunk for sponsorship reasons) is an annual National Basketball Association (NBA) competition held during the NBA All-Star Weekend. The contest was inaugurated by the American Basketball Association (ABA) at its All-Star Game in 1976 in Denver, the same year the slam dunk was legalized in the NCAA. As a result of the ABA-NBA merger later that year there would not be another slam dunk contest at the professional level until 1984. The contest has adopted several formats over the years, including, until 2014, the use of fan voting, via text-messaging, to determine the winner of the final round.
The very first slam dunk contest was won by Julius Erving of the Nets at the 1976 ABA All-Star Game. The current champion of the NBA Dunk Contest is Zach LaVine of the Minnesota Timberwolves.
On January 27, 1976 at McNichols Sports Arena during halftime of the 1976 ABA All Star Game the first-ever Slam Dunk Contest was held, which was won by Julius Erving of the New York Nets over David Thompson of the Denver Nuggets, Artis Gilmore of the Kentucky Colonels, and George Gervin and Larry Kenon of the San Antonio Spurs. There was a format each competitor had to follow in which they must attempt 5 dunks in a row under two minutes. One from a standing position, one from a distance of ten feet away from the basket (which is basically the bottom of the semi circle that surrounds the free throw line in the Key. The next 3 were freelance positions, one coming in from the left side of the basket, one coming in from the right side of the basket and finally from either corner down the baseline to the basket. They were judged on artistic ability, imagination, body flow as well as fan response.

[Intro: Fes Taylor]
You gotta have swag to pull this one off
It's like ya'll rappers scared to make money, huh?
[Fes Taylor:]
Breeze with the top down
Kinda cool when you eating at the top now
Still move like a player from the Chi-Town
I'm S.I. bound, now I take the top down
I ride around, what up, ma, jump in the car
Pull in the hotel, you can jump on the rod
I 'bust a rhyme' like 'oh my God'
Playing with the big joker, I hold my cards
Place ya bet, pace my steps
Park Hill Project, the place I rep
Like Henry the VIII, I make my reps
So I still chase paper til I face my death
After we say grace, what's left
Drop a jewel, out my chain or my bracelet I left
Know the ones that's struggled, embrace this best
We ain't have nothing, got a taste of the best
[Chorus: Fes Taylor]
Fly, fly, fly, fly
Fly, fly, fly away with me
Fly, fly, fly, fly
Fly, fly, fly away with me
I'm so high, I can touch the sky
So proud, I can walk on the clouds, say it loud now
I'm so high, I can touch the sky
So proud, I can walk on the clouds, say it loud now
[Fes Taylor:]
We on the come up now, shorties smile
Hoes looking at the kid like he come up, how
I ain't trick no bread, I just run up town
Trying, to flood the town with a couple of pounds
Last vacation, we spent ten thou'
You know, sky high, looking down from the penthouse
Haters rather see me in the big house
So I make a couple bucks, slide 'fore the pigs out
Big chain looking like he switch lanes
When the light hit 'em like the signal flashing
Nigga you ain't balling, you single flashing
Plus I'm still single, I mingle in Aspen
You a hasbeen, I was getting cash then
Fucking with broads, pop ecst' like aspirins
Past tense, he ain't been back sense
Came back with a suntan and an accent
