At the height of the Fees Must Fall protests that rocked South African campuses in 2015, Professor Adam Habib, Vice-Chancellor of Wits University, was offered a chair to sit on during a mass meeting with students.
He declined, and sat down on the floor instead to listen to their grievances. It was a gesture of solidarity that quite literally put him on the same level as the protestors, but at the same time it was a reminder that he too once stood with his fist raised on the other side of the great divide.
As a young “troublemaker”, growing up in Pietermaritzburg, he was an active participant in high school boycotts, campus politics, and the trade union movement. During the State of Emergency years, on the cusp of South Africa’s transition to democracy, he was detained for his political activities, adding a touch of irony to his later decision, as Vice-Chancellor, to bring riot police onto the seething campus.
But as Professor Habib tells Ruda in this revealing interview, he had been “predicting an explosion” in the tertiary education system for years, so the intensity of the Fees Must Fall protests didn’t take him by surprise.
But what it did do was put him through “an existential crisis”, as he battled to align his strong support for the legitimate demands of students, with his duty to keep Wits from collapsing under the onslaught of the protests.
Now writing a book on Fees Must Fall, Professor Habib tells Ruda about his rabble-rousing early years, his political reawakening far away from home, and his realisation that the struggle for liberty continues to rage, even in a free society.

When Australian war journalist, Bryce Wilson, first saw the devastation wrought by the war in Ukraine’s east, it was how most saw it - through the keyhole of a computer screen. Australian interest in the Russian-Ukrainian conflict reached its greatest following after the downing of Flight MH17 in 2014, which resulted in the deaths of 27 Australians.
As Bryce sat at his desk being paid for work he detested, he read about and saw the suffering and hardship endured by hundreds of thousands of people in Ukraine. And then it stopped. Australian coverage dried up, so Bryce attempted to fill the space left behind by other media.
This video contains interviews with soldiers of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, as well as volunteers providing humanitarian aid in Ukraine’s east, and extensive video recorded during two weeks living on the frontline in Mariinka and Pisky, two towns in the contested Donetsk Oblast region.
One day during these two weeks Bryce found himself standing at the grave of a fallen Ukrainian soldier, someone he had lived with. The reality of war set in, and the cavernous vacuum left behind by the thrill of being shot at was filled with sadness. As he stood there silently crying, thousands of kilometres from home, he felt a small percentage of the pain those in Ukraine felt every day.

The Next Best Thing
The Next Best Thing is a 2000 American comedy-drama film, the final film directed by John Schlesinger. It stars Madonna, Rupert Everett, and Benjamin Bratt. It was a critical and commercial failure.
Plot
Two best friends – one a straight woman, Abbie, the other a gay man, Robert – decide to have a child together. Five years later, Abbie falls in love with a heterosexual man and wants to move away with him and Robert's little boy Sam, and a nasty custody battle ensues.

Production
The film began as an original screenplay, The Red Curtain, by Thomas Ropelewski, which he intended to direct, with his wife Leslie Dixon to produce. It was announced to be made in 1995 with Richard Dreyfuss attached as star; he dropped out then Helen Hunt was named as female lead. She was eventually replaced by Madonna and then Rupert Everett signed on as star. Filming took place between 23 April and 30 June 1999. It was later claimed the script was extensively rewritten by Ryan Murphy and Rupert Everett.

Time Stood Still (film)
Time Stood Still is a 1956 Warner Brothers Scope Gem travelogue, filmed the previous year in Dinkelsbühl, and presented in the wide-screen format of CinemaScope. Filmmaker André de la Varre handled a great many of that studio’s documentary shorts of the forties and fifties.
It was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Live Action Short Film at the 29th Academy Awards.

When Australian war journalist, Bryce Wilson, first saw the devastation wrought by the war in Ukraine’s east, it was how most saw it - through the keyhole of a computer screen. Australian interest in the Russian-Ukrainian conflict reached its greatest following after the downing of Flight MH17 in 2014, which resulted in the deaths of 27 Australians.
As Bryce sat at his desk being paid for work he detested, he read about and saw the suffering and hardship endured by hundreds of thousands of people in Ukraine. And then it stopped. Australian coverage dried up, so Bryce attempted to fill the space left behind by other media.
This video contains interviews with soldiers of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, as well as volunteers providing humanitarian aid in Ukraine’s east, and extensive video recorded during two weeks living on the frontline in Mariinka and Pisky, two towns in the contested Donetsk Oblast region.
One day during these two weeks Bryce found himself standing at the grave of a fallen Ukrainian soldier, someone he had lived with. The reality of war set in, and the cavernous vacuum left behind by the thrill of being shot at was filled with sadness. As he stood there silently crying, thousands of kilometres from home, he felt a small percentage of the pain those in Ukraine felt every day.

At the height of the Fees Must Fall protests that rocked South African campuses in 2015, Professor Adam Habib, Vice-Chancellor of Wits University, was offered a chair to sit on during a mass meeting with students.
He declined, and sat down on the floor instead to listen to their grievances. It was a gesture of solidarity that quite literally put him on the same level as the protestors, but at the same time it was a reminder that he too once stood with his fist raised on the other side of the great divide.
As a young “troublemaker”, growing up in Pietermaritzburg, he was an active participant in high school boycotts, campus politics, and the trade union movement. During the State of Emergency years, on the cusp of South Africa’s transition to democracy, he was detained for his political activities, adding a touch of irony to his later decision, as Vice-Chancellor, to bring riot police onto the seething campus.
But as Professor Habib tells Ruda in this revealing interview, he had been “predicting an explosion” in the tertiary education system for years, so the intensity of the Fees Must Fall protests didn’t take him by surprise.
But what it did do was put him through “an existential crisis”, as he battled to align his strong support for the legitimate demands of students, with his duty to keep Wits from collapsing under the onslaught of the protests.

When Australian war journalist, Bryce Wilson, first saw the devastation wrought by the war in Ukraine’s east, it was how most saw it - through the keyhole of a computer screen. Australian interest in the Russian-Ukrainian conflict reached its greatest following after the downing of Flight MH17 in 2014, which resulted in the deaths of 27 Australians.
As Bryce sat at his desk being paid for work he detested, he read about and saw the suffering and hardship endured by hundreds of thousands of people in Ukraine. And then it stopped. Australian coverage dried up, so Bryce attempted to fill the space left behind by other media.
This video contains interviews with soldiers of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, as well as volunteers providing humanitarian aid in Ukraine’s east, and extensive video recorded during two weeks living on the frontline in Mariinka and Pisky, two towns in the contested Donetsk Oblast region.
One day during these two weeks Bryce found himself standing at the grave of a fallen Ukrainian soldier, someone he had lived with. The reality of war set in, and the cavernous vacuum left behind by the thrill of being shot at was filled with sadness. As he stood there silently crying, thousands of kilometres from home, he felt a small percentage of the pain those in Ukraine felt every day.

The Next Best Thing
The Next Best Thing is a 2000 American comedy-drama film, the final film directed by John Schlesinger. It stars Madonna, Rupert Everett, and Benjamin Bratt. It was a critical and commercial failure.
Plot
Two best friends – one a straight woman, Abbie, the other a gay man, Robert – decide to have a child together. Five years later, Abbie falls in love with a heterosexual man and wants to move away with him and Robert's little boy Sam, and a nasty custody battle ensues.

Production
The film began as an original screenplay, The Red Curtain, by Thomas Ropelewski, which he intended to direct, with his wife Leslie Dixon to produce. It was announced to be made in 1995 with Richard Dreyfuss attached as star; he dropped out then Helen Hunt was named as female lead. She was eventually replaced by Madonna and then Rupert Everett signed on as star. Filming took place between 23 April and 30 June 1999. It was later claimed the script was extensively rewritten by Ryan Murphy and Rupert Everett.
