Orishas " Represent Cuba" (feat. heather headley)
(The name "Orishas" refers to the set of deities worshipped in African-based religions in the Americas, like Santería in Cuba and Candomblé in Brazil, resulting from the relocation of Yoruba slaves. These orishas each represent a natural element (such as the ocean or leaves) and exhibit a human characteristic (such as motherhood or love))

Cuba: A deserted revolution? | Talk to Al Jazeera: In the Field
Cuba is witnessing an economic crisis that has taken the country back 30 years, to the so-called "Special Period".
As then, when subsidies from the former Soviet Union vanished, Cubans are suffering hardships and acute shortages of everything, from food to fuel.
The difference is that today, many tell you that the worst shortage is of hope.
And so, a new mass exodus of Cubans is under way, the largest in four decades.
On this edition of Talk to Al Jazeera: In the Field, we travel to the Cuban capital, Havana, to meet some of the people confronting the crisis.

Sometimes it’s hard to know whether Cuba is awakening to the world, or if the world is awakening to Cuba. Whatever your politics, it's easy to admire this island nation that has proudly gone its own way. Cuba may still have one foot firmly in the past, but as the world tumbles towards tomorrow, we can be thankful for the many things it has not let go.
For now, we hope you enjoy watching this #travel #guide as much as we enjoyed making it.

LYRICS

De Alto Cedro voy para Marcané
Luego a Cueto voy para Mayarí.
El cariño que te tengo
Yo no lo puedo negar
Se me sale la babita
Yo no lo puedo evitar.
Cuando Juanica y Chan Chan
En el mar cernían arena
Como sacudía el ‘jibe’
A Chan Chan le daba pena.
Limpia el camino de paja
Que yo me quiero sentar
En aquel tronco que veo
Y así no puedo llegar.
De Alto Cedro voy para Marcané
Luego a Cueto voy para Mayarí.

I’m going from Alto Cedro
to Marcané
Then from Cueto, I’m going
to Mayarí.
The love I have for you I cannot deny
My mouth is watering
I just can’t help myself.
When Juanika and Chan Chan
Sifted sand together on the beach
How her bottom shook and
Chan Chan was aroused!
Clean the dry sugar cane
leaves from the path
So I can get to that trunk
I want to sit down.
I’m going from Alto Cedro
to Marcané
Then from Cueto, I’m going
to Mayarí.

CUBA: HAVANA: EXPULSION ORDER SERVED AGAINST MIGRANTS IN CAPITAL
(28 May 1997) Spanish/Nat
An expulsion order has been served against the growing tide of rural Cubans pouring into the capital, Havana, in search of a better life.
Cuba's president, Fidel Castro, signed legislation last month which orders the ejection of migrants in Havana who moved without sufficient legal documentation.
The law comes as the capital, already suffering fuel and water shortages, is stretched to breaking point by a growing population.
Cuba's modernisation is threatening to overwhelm the capital, Havana.
The city is home to two million inhabitants -- a fifth of the country's population.
Those who live in the provinces and smaller towns increasingly view Havana as a haven of opportunity.
And six years of economic crisis have made it even more so, as forei...

Arrowroot is a perennial plant growing to a height of between 0.3 m (1 ft) and 1.5 m (5 ft). Its leaves are lanceolate. The edible part of the plant is the rhizome. Twin clusters of small white flowers bloom about 90 days after planting. The plant rarely produces seed and reproduction is typically by planting part of a rhizome with a bud. Rhizomes are ready for harvesting 10–12 months after planting as leaves of the plant begin to wilt and die. The rhizomes are fleshy, cylindrical, and grow from 20 cm (8 in) to 45 cm (18 in) long.
The arrowroot plant probably originated in the Amazon rainforest of north-western Brazil and neighboring countries. It grows best between temperatures of 23 °C (73 °F) and 29 °C (84 °F) with annual precipitation between 150 cm (59 in) and 200 cm (79 in). The dormant rhizomes can withstand temperatures as low as 5 °C (41 °F).
In the continental United States, arrowroot is cultivated as an outside plant only in southern Florida.
Distribution
Maranta arundinacea is native to Mexico, Central America, the West Indies (Cuba, Hispaniola, Puerto Rico, Trinidad, Lesser Antilles) and South America (Brazil, Peru, Ecuador, Colombia, Venezuela, Suriname, Guyana, French Guiana).[2] It is widely cultivated in the many warm countries and is considered naturalized in Jamaica, Bahamas, Bermuda, the Netherlands Antilles, India, Sri Lanka, China (Guangdong, Guangxi, Hainan, Yunnan), Taiwan, Volcano Islands, Mauritius, Réunion, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, Florida, Cambodia, Indonesia and the Philippines.[6][7]
The Caribbean island nation of St. Vincent and the Grenadines is the world's largest grower of arrowroot and producer of arrowroot flour.[8] In Kerala, India, arrowroot, locally called bilathi koova, is cultivated to produce an easily digestible starch.[9]
Prehistoric domestication
Radio-carbon dating has established that M. arundinacea was one of the first plants domesticated in prehistoric South America. Arrowroot, along with leren (Calathea allouia), squash (Cucurbita moschata), and bottle gourd (Lagenaria siceraria) became cultivated plants in northern South American and Panama between 8200 BC and 5600 BC.[10] Some archaeologists believe that arrowroot was first used by Native Americans not as food but as a poultice to extract poison from wounds caused by spears or arrows.[11]
Evidence of the use of arrowroot as food has been found dating from 8200 BC at the San Isidro archaeological site in the upper Cauca River valley of Colombia near the city of Popayán. Starch grains from arrowroot were found on grinding tools. It is unclear whether the arrowroot had been gathered or grown, although the elevation of the site of 1,700 metres (5,600 ft) is probably outside the normal range of elevations at wh

And six years of economic crisis have made it even more so, as foreign investment and tourism take root in a country hit hard by shortages.
A phrase has been coined for Havana's growing number of illegal migrants - Palestinos, a reference to the past stateless identity of Palestinians.
An estimated 50-thousand such Palestinos moved to Havana last year, double the figures reported for 1990.
SOUNDBITE: (Spanish)
"Havana is full. It's packed. There is not much work, almost none. There is not enough housing, there a lot of people in one house. That is why they passed this law. It (Havana) is very small for the whole of Cuba. Havana is the smallest province there is but look at the number of people here."
SUPER CAPTION: Vox Pop
The new legislation is widely regarded as controversial.
Already cars have been requisitioned to carry the so-called "Palestinos" away.
This off-duty police officer turned reporters away from San Miguel del Padron, a run down housing development on the outskirts of Havana where many live in fear of expulsion.
SOUNDBITE: (Spanish)
"I don't have a problem with this law, being a native from here, but I think that those who are from outside and who are here in Havana have the same right as us to be here."
SUPER CAPTION: Raul Olivar, Havana resident
Newcomers often move into homes that are simple, often communal, with one water pump for several families.
But despite the rustic conditions, many are reluctant to leave.
Many are now so established in the capital they have nothing to return to.
SOUNDBITE: (Spanish)
"On the one hand my children are here studying. It would be a shame to have to go back to wherever they came from and discover they don't have the education that they get here."
Q: Do you have a house there (in the provinces)?
A: "No, I am here with my daughter who lives here."
SUPER CAPTION: Juana Maria Serrano, moved to Havana
But there is little open criticism of the policy.
The state has made it clear the capital is struggling to deliver sufficient fuel and water supplies to its swelling population.
In parts of Old Havana, population density has reached 30-thousand people per square kilometer.
And the government is blaming the new migrants for the capital's crime wave.
SOUNDBITE: (Spanish)
"If it were necessary, I would go but it's more convenient and there is more work here."
SUPER CAPTION: Juan Antonio, construction worker
The new legislation requires a thorough survey of inhabitants and legal documentation.
SOUNDBITE: (Spanish)
SUPER CAPTION: Liale, local official
Those who are removed from Havana dread returning to a life of toil in the fields -- the main source of provincial employment.
The city's modernisation is unique in a country still embedded in a communist-inspired revolution.
Even so, many Cubans hope the modernisation in Havana is a taste of things to come.

Listening is a more natural way of learning, when compared to reading. Written language only began at around 3200 BC, but spoken language has existed long ago.
Learning by listening is a great way to:
- increases imagination and understanding
- improves your listening skills
- improves your own spoken accent
- learn while on the move
- reduce eye strain
Now learn the vast amount of general knowledge available on Wikipedia through audio (audio article). You could even learn subconsciously by playing the audio while you are sleeping! If you are planning to listen a lot, you could try using a bone conduction headphone, or a standard speaker instead of an earphone.
