The US Army chief met top Chinese generals in Beijing Friday amid regional tensions and efforts to build trust between the two nation's militaries.
US Army Chief of Staff General Ray Odierno was greeted with full military honours on Friday morning at China's Defence Ministry and had a full day of meetings scheduled in addition to an event at prestigious Peking University.
His visit comes amid bitter disputes between China and two US allies - Japan and the Philippines - over territorial claims in the East and South China seas.
China also sparked US concerns late last year when it unexpectedly announced an air defence zone encompassing a large swath of the East China Sea, including islands controlled by Japan but claimed by Beijing.
Washington has refused to recognise the zone or follow China's demands that its aircraft file flight plans with Beijing's Defence Ministry and heed Chinese instructions or face unspecified retaliatory measures.
Despite those tensions, the militaries have pushed ahead with limited steps to reduce longstanding mistrust between them.
They have held simulations aimed at cooperating in humanitarian relief operations, and China's navy later this year is to take part in multi-national naval exercises off Hawaii.

The title, chief of staff, identifies the leader of a complex organization, institution, or body of persons and it also may identify a Principal Staff Officer (PSO), who is the coordinator of the supporting staff or a primary aide-de-camp to an important individual, such as a president.
In general, a chief of staff provides a buffer between a chief executive and that executive's direct-reporting team. The chief of staff generally works behind the scenes to solve problems, mediate disputes, and deal with issues before they bubble up to the Chief Executive. Often Chiefs of Staff act as a confidante and advisor to the Chief Executive, acting as a sounding board for ideas. Ultimately the actual duties depend on the actual position and the people involved.
In general, the positions listed below are not "chiefs of staff" as defined at the top of this page. In general, they are the heads of the various forces/commands. Note that, in general, they tend to have subordinates that do fulfill the "chief of staff" roles.

General Gebregziabher Andemariam, Chief of Staff of the Eritrean Defence Force,was conducted today at Asmara Patriots Cemetery with patriotic zeal in the presence of President Isaias Afwerki, Ministers, Senior Government and PFDJ officials, Army Commanders, religious leaders and a large number of nationals. The funeral ceremony was accompanied by Salute of the Guard of Honor that marched from Maj. General Gebregziabher's home to the cemetery, and the memoir was presented by Brig. General Tekle Libsu. The departed Maj. General Gebregziabher joined the Liberation Forces in 1971 and served in various capacities for 43 years ranging from a rank-and-file member to Chief of Staff of the Defense Force, and his exemplary steadfastness persisted in safeguarding the nation's sovereignty and the nation-building process. He also possessed a valuable charisma concerning nationalism, love for people, energy, bravery and pleasant personality. The funeral service witnessed the laying of wreath by President Isaias, Mr. Al-Amin Mohammed Seid, PFDJ Secretary, Gen. Sibhat Ephrem, Defense Minister, Ms. Leul Gebreab, Chairperson of the NUEW, and Commanders of all commands, Naval force and Air Force, as well as the People's Army. Asmara, 08 March 2014 -- The funeral service of the late veteran fighter Maj. General Gebregziabher Andemariam, Chief of Staff of the Eritrean Defence Force,was conducted today at Asmara Patriots Cemetery with patriotic zeal in the presence of President Isaias Afwerki, Ministers, Senior Government and PFDJ officials, Army Commanders, religious leaders and a large number of nationals.
The funeral ceremony was accompanied by Salute of the Guard of Honor that marched from Maj. General Gebregziabher's home to the cemetery, and the memoir was presented by Brig. General Tekle Libsu.
The departed Maj. General Gebregziabher joined the Liberation Forces in 1971 and served in various capacities for 43 years ranging from a rank-and-file member to Chief of Staff of the Defense Force, and his exemplary steadfastness persisted in safeguarding the nation's sovereignty and the nation-building process. He also possessed a valuable charisma concerning nationalism, love for people, energy, bravery and pleasant personality.
The funeral service witnessed the laying of wreath by President Isaias, Mr. Al-Amin Mohammed Seid, PFDJ Secretary, Gen. Sibhat Ephrem, Defense Minister, Ms. Leul Gebreab, Chairperson of the NUEW, and Commanders of all commands, Naval force and Air Force, as well as the People's Army.
The Government of Eritrea conveys message of condolence to the family members and the citizenry in connection with the passing away of the late Maj. General Gebregziabher Andemariam, chief of staff of the Defense Force.
