TURKISH JETS STRIKE KURDISH POSITIONS IN IRAQ AMID RISING TENSION BETWEEN ANKARA & BAGHDAD - 09 Dec - Ankara carried out airstrikes targeting Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) forces in northern Iraq, the Turkish army said on Wednesday. The action comes in the wake of rising tensions between Ankara and Baghdad over the deployment of Turkish troops in Iraq.
Ten F-16 fighter jets launched an attack between 10pm and 10:50pm on Tuesday, targeting PKK positions in the Kandil, Hakurk, Zap and Avasin-Baysan regions in northern Iraq, the Turkish General Staff said in a statement. It added that the targets were “destroyed in an aerial campaign.”
Tensions have been rising between Ankara and Baghdad after Turkey deployed hundreds of troops equipped with tanks and artillery to Iraq’s northern Nineveh Governorate last Thursday, saying they will train forces battling Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL).
Baghdad said it had not asked for the help of Turkish forces, and demanded their withdrawal after it said Turkey had “illegally” sent the troops into Iraq. Describing the move as violation of sovereignty, the Iraqi government also asked NATO to intervene.
Meanwhile, Shiite paramilitary groups have threatened to use force against Turkey unless it pulls its forces out of Iraq. Likening the Turkish incursion to the occupation of Iraq by IS militants, Badr Brigade spokesman Karim al-Nuri said "all options" were available.
"We have the right to respond and we do not exclude any type of response until the Turks have learned their lesson," Nuri said on Wednesday. "Do they have a dream of restoring Ottoman greatness? This is a great delusion and they will pay dearly because of Turkish arrogance."
Also on Wednesday, the Iraqi parliament unanimously approved a motion condemning the Turkish intervention, supporting the government in taking whatever measures it viewed as appropriate.
Russia raised the issue at a meeting of the UN Security Council on Tuesday, expressing hope that Ankara will avoid escalating the situation in the region with any further reckless actions. Following the meeting, Russia’s UN envoy Vitaly Churkin said that Moscow expects Ankara to “settle the situation in Iraq in a way that would satisfy the Iraqi government."
“Now the situation is within the focus of the attention of the Security Council, so we hope it will help resolve [it] to the satisfaction of the Iraqi government, whose sovereignty, territorial integrity and independence will be respected,” he said.

STATE DEPARTMENT: EVIDENCE SHOWS RUSSIA HIT HOSPITAL IN SYRIA WITH AIRSTRIKE - 29 Oct - The U.S. administration has evidence that leads it to believe Russia hit a hospital in Syria with an airstrike, said State Department spokesman John Kirby in a press briefing Thursday.
"We have evidence that leads us to believe that that happened," Kirby said.
Kirby said the U.S. used various operational reporting to come to that conclusion. Russia has denied that it hit the hospital.
Russia has been accused several times in recent weeks of hitting hospitals in Syria. Last week the Syrian American Medical Society said Russian airstrikes killed least 12 people in a hospital in the northwest province of Idlib. At least 595 people have been killed by Russian airstrikes in Syria so far, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a monitoring group, said Thursday.

John Kirby Allen (1810–1838) was born in Canasareaugh, near Syracuse in the U.S. state of New York. He, along with his older brother, Augustus Chapman Allen, founded Houston, Texas in 1836. John Kirby Allen was never married. He died of congestive fever on August 15, 1838, and was buried at Founders Cemetery in Houston.
When he was seven years old, John took his first job, as a bellboy in a hotel in Orrville. Three years later, he started working as a clerk in a retail shop. At sixteen, he formed a partnership with a friend operating a hat store at Chittenango, New York, where his brother, Augustus Chapman Allen, was professor of mathematics. In 1827, John cashed in his interest in the hat store and followed his brother to New York City, where they were investors in H. and H. Canfield Company until 1832. The brothers then moved to Texas.
The Allen brothers arrived first in Galveston, Texas and then moved to the small town of Saint Augustine. In 1833, John Allen and his brother associated with a group of entrepreneurs in Nacogdoches and started operating a business as land speculators.

Images of a checkpoint on the border between the Turkish town of Reyhanli and the town of Sarmada in Syrian taken in late October and late January show a buildup of transportation infrastructure that could be used for moving in troops, ammunition and weapons, spokesman Maj. Gen. Igor Konashenkov said in an English-language written statement. He said these were among growing signs of "hidden preparation of the Turkish armed forces for active actions on the territory of Syria. "Maybe, in peacetime, these facts would indicate the expectation of trade turnover growth between the neighboring countries," Konashenkov said. "However, during wartime, in such a way the transport infrastructure is preparing on the eve of military intervention." TURKISH JETS STRIKE KURDISH POSITIONS IN IRAQ AMID RISING TENSION BETWEEN ANKARA & BAGHDAD - 09 Dec - Ankara carried out airstrikes targeting Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) forces in northern Iraq, the Turkish army said on Wednesday. The action comes in the wake of rising tensions between Ankara and Baghdad over the deployment of Turkish troops in Iraq.
Ten F-16 fighter jets launched an attack between 10pm and 10:50pm on Tuesday, targeting PKK positions in the Kandil, Hakurk, Zap and Avasin-Baysan regions in northern Iraq, the Turkish General Staff said in a statement. It added that the targets were “destroyed in an aerial campaign.”
Tensions have been rising between Ankara and Baghdad after Turkey deployed hundreds of troops equipped with tanks and artillery to Iraq’s northern Nineveh Governorate last Thursday, saying they will train forces battling Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL).
Baghdad said it had not asked for the help of Turkish forces, and demanded their withdrawal after it said Turkey had “illegally” sent the troops into Iraq. Describing the move as violation of sovereignty, the Iraqi government also asked NATO to intervene.
Meanwhile, Shiite paramilitary groups have threatened to use force against Turkey unless it pulls its forces out of Iraq. Likening the Turkish incursion to the occupation of Iraq by IS militants, Badr Brigade spokesman Karim al-Nuri said "all options" were available.
"We have the right to respond and we do not exclude any type of response until the Turks have learned their lesson," Nuri said on Wednesday. "Do they have a dream of restoring Ottoman greatness? This is a great delusion and they will pay dearly because of Turkish arrogance."
Also on Wednesday, the Iraqi parliament unanimously approved a motion condemning the Turkish intervention, supporting the government in taking whatever measures it viewed as appropriate.
Russia raised the issue at a meeting of the UN Security Council on Tuesday, expressing hope that Ankara will avoid escalating the situation in the region with any further reckless actions. Following the meeting, Russia’s UN envoy Vitaly Churkin said that Moscow expects Ankara to “settle the situation in Iraq in a way that would satisfy the Iraqi government."
“Now the situation is within the focus of the attention of the Security Council, so we hope it will help resolve [it] to the satisfaction of the Iraqi government, whose sovereignty, territorial integrity and independence will be respected,” he said.

STATE DEPARTMENT: EVIDENCE SHOWS RUSSIA HIT HOSPITAL IN SYRIA WITH AIRSTRIKE - 29 Oct - The U.S. administration has evidence that leads it to believe Russia hit a hospital in Syria with an airstrike, said State Department spokesman John Kirby in a press briefing Thursday.
"We have evidence that leads us to believe that that happened," Kirby said.
Kirby said the U.S. used various operational reporting to come to that conclusion. Russia has denied that it hit the hospital.
Russia has been accused several times in recent weeks of hitting hospitals in Syria. Last week the Syrian American Medical Society said Russian airstrikes killed least 12 people in a hospital in the northwest province of Idlib. At least 595 people have been killed by Russian airstrikes in Syria so far, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a monitoring group, said Thursday.

POLICE RAID OFFICES OF POPULAR CRITICAL NEWSPAPER IN TURKEY AFTER GOVERNMENT SEIZURE - 04 Mar - Turkey's bestselling daily opposition newspaper, critical of the Turkish president, has been seized by a court, raising fears over the government's crackdown on journalists and media groups.
Popular daily Zaman, linked to the self-exiled preacher Fethullah Gulen, has been ordered into administration by an Istanbul court after a request from state prosecutors, Turkey's Anadolu agency said.
Police raided the offices of the newspaper on Friday night after hundreds of readers and Zaman supporters were outside the newspaper's offices in Istanbul protesting against the court's decision despite heavy rain.
They had been chanting "free press cannot be silenced" as well as holding placards which said: "Don't touch my newspaper."
The order issued on Friday means that trustees will be appointed for the newspaper to take over management, the newspaper's sister English publication, Today's Zaman reported.

RUSSIA ACCUSES TURKEY OF PREPARING TO INVADE SYRIA - 04 Feb - The Russian military said Thursday that it has "reasonable grounds" to suspect that Turkey is making intensive preparations for a military invasion of neighboring Syria.
Images of a checkpoint on the border between the Turkish town of Reyhanli and the town of Sarmada in Syrian taken in late October and late January show a buildup of transportation infrastructure that could be used for moving in troops, ammunition and weapons, spokesman Maj. Gen. Igor Konashenkov said in an English-language written statement.
He said these were among growing signs of "hidden preparation of the Turkish armed forces for active actions on the territory of Syria.
"Maybe, in peacetime, these facts would indicate the expectation of trade turnover growth between the neighboring countries," Konashenkov said. "However, during wartime, in such a way the transport infrastructure is preparing on the eve of military intervention."
A Turkish Foreign Ministry official said the ministry would have no immediate comment.

In comments published Sunday, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said Washington should choose between Turkey and the Kurdish Democratic Union Party, or PYD, as its partner.
That came after envoy Brett McGurk's visit to Kobani, where the PYD's military wing, aided by U.S.-led airstrikes, drove back Islamic State militants a year ago. Turkey considers the PYD a terrorist group because of its affiliation with Turkey's outlawed Kurdistan Workers' Party, or PKK.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported Monday morning that the People's Protection Units (YPG) took control of the villages of Deir Jamal and Maarnaz in northern Aleppo countryside, placing the Kurdish force within striking distance of the rebel-held Minnegh airbase.

TURKEY'S ZAMAN VOWS TO CONTINUE AS OPPOSITION NEWSPAPER IN GERMAN EXILE - 07 Mar - Turkey's top-selling newspaper Zaman plans to continue publishing as an opposition daily in Germany after it was taken over by the state in its home country, the editor-in-chief of Zaman Almanya (Zaman Germany) said on Monday.
Turkish authorities seized control of Zaman on Friday in a widening crackdown against supporters of U.S.-based Muslim cleric Fethullah Gulen, an influential foe of President Tayyip Erdogan. Zaman has been affiliated with Gulen.
"As of today we are printing a version of Zaman that has nothing to do with Zaman there (in Turkey) because it has been forcibly taken over by the state," Sueleyman Bag told Reuters TV in an interview.
Monday's edition of Zaman Almanya bore a black front page with the headline: 'The constitution is abolished'. That stood in stark contrast to the paper published in Turkey, which on Sunday dropped its criticism of the government and published flattering stories about Erdogan.

Obviously the whole concert was recorded on unknown audio-discs; in 1947 parts of them were used on the 33 rpm-series "Notes On Jazz" (forerunner of AFRTS-ETs) without any detailed reference to this concert. Bozy White had noted them without any details due to Eddie Condon Concerts because Notes On Jazz used an Eddie Condon intro-theme.
Concert was long pre- and reviewed in several US-negro-newspapers.
My friended late Buck Clayton and Nancy Elliott have been exhausted in the early `80s about my Basie-Clayton working book with advertisements 1934 (Buck´s wedding photo) to 1967 (now available on pdf-files) and the 1941 Carnegie Hall Concert on tape for him and who absolutely couldn´t understand that US-LP producers refused a LP-release fearing any "later" often self-called Basie-copyright holders. I used several silent background fragments copied from private old film-reels or docus to give the concert a vivid impression with aggreement by Buck for non commercial use and hope any "later" copyright holders will aggree for historical reasons.

Turkish security officials say Sunday night’s terror attack, the third bombing in the country’s capital since October, was the work of two fighters from the outlawed Kurdistan Workers' Party, known as the PKK, although no group has yet to claim responsibility.
The embassy’s message Friday warned Americans to stay away from Ankara’s city center due to a “potential terrorist plot to attack Turkish government buildings and housing located in the Bahcelievler area of Ankara.”
The warning was eerily on point, with a massive explosion detonating at a transport hub several hundred yards from Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu's office, killing dozens of innocent bystanders.

ERDOGAN'S TURKEY: A DISINTEGRATING ALLY AND IMAGINARY FRIEND - 14 Mar - The kneejerk response of Turkey’s leaders to the country’s latest terrorist atrocity – Sunday’s suicide bombing in Ankara that killed 37 people and injured more than 100 – suggests that Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, Turkey’s strongman president, and his neo-Islamist party are fresh out of ideas about how to halt what looks increasingly like a slide into chaos.
The bigger problem, for Turkey’s US and European allies, is how to shore up a strategically important Muslim democracy, Nato member and EU applicant that had long been considered a vital outpost of stability in a volatile region. State Department spokesman John Kirby struggled Monday to articulate whether the Obama administration believes Iran’s recent ballistic missile tests violated a standing U.N. Security Council resolution and did not deny that the softening on missile test restrictions in the resolution was a concession made by the United States during negotiations over the Iran nuclear deal. Associated Press reporter Matt Lee challenged Kirby during the State Department daily press briefing on whether the Iranian missile launches violated U.N. Security Council resolution 2231, which endorsed the Iran deal as international law. He did so by first comparing the language of resolution 2231 with the older resolution 1929 that it replaced upon the passing of the nuclear accord.
“[Resolution] 1929 says ‘that Iran shall not undertake any activity related to ballistic missiles capable of delivering nuclear weapons, including launches using ballistic missile technology,’” Lee quoted to Kirby. “2231, which replaced [1929] and enshrined the Iran deal, says ‘Iran is called upon not to undertake any activity related to ballistic missiles designed to be capable of delivering nuclear weapons, including launches using such ballistic missile technology’ … You have ‘shall not’ and ‘is called upon.’ And as [Russian Ambassador to the U.N. Vitaly] Churkin said, you can’t violate a call. You can ignore it, but it’s not a violation.” Iran test-fired two ballistic missiles capable of reaching Israel on March 9, with the phrase “Israel must be wiped off the map” written on them in Hebrew. The launches appeared to intentionally coincide with Vice President Joe Biden’s trip to the Jewish state on the same day.
These launches came one day after Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps tested several more ballistic missiles. Iranian leaders also promised the same week that their missile work will not stop as they continue to build on their current arsenal, the most sophisticated one in the Middle East. The missiles were all reportedly capable of delivering nuclear warheads, a point that Kirby confirmed on Monday. Kirby responded to Lee that he is not going to engage in a “rhetorical debate” to determine if Iran violated resolution 2231, but Lee immediately challenged him, saying the U.S. will have to do just that if it wants the U.N. to act on the missile tests. “You’re going to have to because if you’re going to push this at the Security Council, you’re going to have to convince people, like the Russians and the Chinese and others, that they’re wrong and your interpretation is right,” Lee said. “And if you can’t do that, then you’re going to lose. You’re not going to be able to get anything through the Security Council.”
Kirby assured Lee the U.S. has a strong case that Iran violated resolution 2231 with its missile tests, saying the “launches are clearly in defiance of that resolution. There’s no question about it.” Lee kept pushing Kirby on the topic, causing the spokesman to become noticeably irritated and flustered. “It seems to me you think it’s a violation still, but I don’t know,” Lee asked. Kirby looked down and smiled in frustration before responding, “We believe that [Iran’s] activity, [which] even you admitted is not consistent with what they are called upon to do in the resolution. Therefore, we believe … that it is important for the council to take this up. And the council can have this discussion about whether it was technically a violation or not.”
