Neighboring Sounds

Neighboring Sounds (Portuguese: O Som ao Redor) is a 2012 Brazilian drama film directed and written by Kleber Mendonça Filho, produced by Emilie Lesclaux and starring Irandhir Santos, Gustavo Jahn and Maeve Jinkings.

The film entered the list of top films of 2012 made by film critic Anthony Oliver Scott from The New York Times. The film was screened at the International Film Festival Rotterdam and was released nationally on January 4, 2013. The film was selected as the Brazilian submission in the foreign-language race for the 86th Academy Awards, but it was not nominated.

Plot

Life in a middle-class neighbourhood in present day Recife takes an unexpected turn after the arrival of an independent private security firm. The presence of these men brings a sense of safety, but also a good deal of anxiety, to a culture which runs on fear. Meanwhile, Bia (Maeve Jinkings), married and a mother of two, must find a way to deal with the constant barking and howling of her neighbour’s dog.

Recife

Recife (Portuguese pronunciation: [ʁeˈsifi]) is the fifth-largestmetropolitan area in Brazil with 3,743,854 inhabitants, the largest metropolitan area of the North/Northeast Regions, the 5th-largest metropolitan influence area in Brazil, and the capital and largest city of the state of Pernambuco. The population of the city proper was 1,555,039 in 2012.

The former capital of the 17th century Dutch Brazil, Recife was founded in 1537, during the early Portuguese colonization of Brazil, as the main harbor of the Captaincy of Pernambuco, known for its large scale production of sugar cane. The city is located at the confluence of the Beberibe and Capibaribe rivers before they flow into the Atlantic Ocean. It is a major port on the Atlantic Ocean. Its name is an allusion to the stone reefs that are present by the city's shores. The many rivers, small islands and over 50 bridges found in Recife city centre characterise its geography and led to the city being called the "Brazilian Venice." As of 2010, it is the capital city with the highest HDI in Northeast Brazil.

Melissa

Melissa is a given name for a female child. The name comes from the Greek word μέλισσα (melissa), "honey bee", which in turn comes from μέλι (meli), "honey". In Hittite melit signifies "honey". Thus the name is the approximate Greek equivalent for the Hebrew name Deborah (דְּבוֹרָה), meaning bee.

She was one of the nymph nurses of Zeus, sister to Amaltheia, but rather than feeding the baby milk, Melissa, appropriately for her name, fed him honey. Or, alternatively, the bees brought honey straight to his mouth. Because of her, Melissa became the name of all the nymphs who cared for the patriarch god as a baby.
