VO NA candidate dies in
Attapeu province
INTRO: Attapeu province (
Constituency 17) now has only six candidates standing for election as members of the
National Assembly (NA) on March 20 after
Major Visay Chanthamath died on Monday. Prior to this, there were seven candidates for Attapeu province, of which five will be elected as NA members.
STORY:
The National Election Committee announced on Tuesday that it will keep only six candidates for the ballot with five to be elected.
Major Visay Chanthamath was formerly
Party Committee member of the
Ministry of National Defence and
Ministry of Defence's
Department of
Military Science and
History Director General.
An official wreath-laying ceremony was held in
Vientiane on Wednesday, allowing individuals and government sectors to express their condolences in honour of Major Visay. The cremation ceremony took place on Thursday.
Major Visay was candidate
No.2 and the
National Election Committee has decided to move the bottom five candidates up one position on the ballot paper.
The election campaign is now active with the six candidates travelling across all five districts to meet local people to introduce themselves and talk about their vision for serving the nation and people.
The March 20 election is a landmark as
Laos aims to strengthen the people's democratic regime and ensure the rights and benefits of local people are protected.
The government called for eligible voters to exercise their rights and obligations in electing their qualified representatives to
the NA.
