FIgured it's about time to finally post something that related to drums and music seeing that everything I've ever posted is just a bunch of craziness really. I loved playing with NIN and the last month I was on tour with them decided to throw up a couple of FLIP cameras, get a live mix from the board that night of a few songs (thanks Pete) and one day I'd get around to messing around with them on my lap-top. Well, the Lights In The Sky fan video that just came out was great and inspired me to put this one up for the drummers that have ever asked me to post drum-related stuff (and anyone else interested.) Try and get through the first half because the 2nd half is pretty kick ass! I'm proud of my involvement with NIN and to stay I enjoyed doing this every night would be an understatement. -Josh

Here's the 4th and last of the drum perspective songs I shot with FLIP cams in December of 2008 with NIN. I forgot that I had this one and never posted it. This was the opening of the "Lights In The Sky Tour" for pretty much all of '08. It goes into "Letting You" which I know I already previously posted but I let it run right into it on the video anyway. Nothing fancy but some good old fashioned "beating the hell out of the drums." 1,000,000 is one of my favorite NIN songs (nice and angry) and was exciting to open the show with every night.

Here's part 2 of the live stuff I filmed with a few FLIP cameras around my drums towards the end of the "Lights In The Sky" tour. Pretty much straight out bashing (cool 7/8 stuff in the verses) but this one was exciting to play every night. One of my favorite moments in the set every night that I always looked forward to was 2nd Verse up through the breakdown.

Josh Freese (born December 25, 1972) is an American session drummer and songwriter. He is a permanent member of A Perfect Circle, The Vandals, and Devo, having formerly played drums for Nine Inch Nails from late 2005 until late 2008, and for Guns N' Roses from mid-1998 to 2001. Freese has appeared on close to 400 records. He is currently performing live with Devo, Weezer and Sublime with Rome. In December 2010, Josh began touring with Paramore on their South American Tour, temporarily replacing the drummer Zac Farro after he and his brother left the band earlier the same month.
Josh Freese was born in Orlando, Florida. His father conducted the Disney World (Florida) and Disneyland (California) Band and his mother was a classical pianist. Freese began playing the drums when he was 8 years old. He started playing professionally at the age of 12 (in a primarily Top 40 band at Disneyland). As a teenager, he played electronic drums in an all-child rock band at Disneyland named Polo, which led to an endorsement deal with the Simmons electronic drum company. There is an old Simmons commercial (directed by Mitch Brisker), featuring Freese on the additional content section of The Vandals' Live at the House of Blues DVD.

John Christopher "Johnny" Depp II (born June 9, 1963) is an American actor, producer and musician. He has won the Golden Globe Award and Screen Actors Guild award for Best Actor. Josh Freese became my favorite rock drummer after I discovered him by chance on the 1992 Suicidal Tendencies album, Art of Rebellion. I was heavy into skateboarding at that time and hardcore punk was the soundtrack of choice during those early teen years. ST was big in the skate scene but I hadn't heard much of their music, so I went to Waxie Maxies in the mall and grabbed their most recent album, which happened to be one where they hired Freese to play drums. FIgured it's about time to finally post something that related to drums and music seeing that everything I've ever posted is just a bunch of craziness really. I loved playing with NIN and the last month I was on tour with them decided to throw up a couple of FLIP cameras, get a live mix from the board that night of a few songs (thanks Pete) and one day I'd get around to messing around with them on my lap-top. Well, the Lights In The Sky fan video that just came out was great and inspired me to put this one up for the drummers that have ever asked me to post drum-related stuff (and anyone else interested.) Try and get through the first half because the 2nd half is pretty kick ass! I'm proud of my involvement with NIN and to stay I enjoyed doing this every night would be an understatement. -Josh

Josh Freese became my favorite rock drummer after I discovered him by chance on the 1992 Suicidal Tendencies album, Art of Rebellion. I was heavy into skateboarding at that time and hardcore punk was the soundtrack of choice during those early teen years. ST was big in the skate scene but I hadn't heard much of their music, so I went to Waxie Maxies in the mall and grabbed their most recent album, which happened to be one where they hired Freese to play drums. That record established an entirely new benchmark for me, as far as what I wanted to sound like on the drums. All throughout, Josh is reckless yet calculated, fresh and exciting yet always in service of the songs, and his sound is loose and natural yet cuts through the mix like a laser beam. He was early in his session career at the time, but it was clear that he was on another level.
Other favorite Freese records are Infectious Grooves' Sarsippius Ark and the first two A Perfect Circle releases. "Judith" is my track of choice here because it's loaded with Freese-isms, like machine-gun fills, over-the-bar phrases, and tribal toms. It also grooves like a mofo. I haven't gotten it down perfectly; I'm still stuck in the "thinking" phase, as my friend and studio great Nir Z once pointed out. But it's about as close as I can get it...for now.
The backing track is from the Hal Leonard "Modern Rock" drum play-along book/CD (www.halleonard.com)

Sublime with Rome is a musical collaboration between Eric Wilson, formerly of the band Sublime, and singer and guitarist Rome Ramirez. The group chiefly performs songs by Sublime, which was fronted by Bradley Nowell until his death in 1996.
Ramirez began performing with Bud Gaugh and Wilson in 2009, where they played under the name "Sublime", until Nowell's estate issued a legal challenge to the use of the trademarked name for a venture not including Nowell. As a result, they changed their name to "Sublime with Rome" in January 2010. The group released two albums, "Yours Truly" (2011) and "Sirens" (2015). Gaugh left the band on December 10, 2011.
Members: Rome Ramirez (vocals), Eric Wilson (bass) and Josh Freese (drums).
Yours Truly is the debut album by rock group Sublime with Rome, which was released on July 12, 2011. It is the first album since the original Sublime disbanded in 1996, due to lead singer and guitarist Bradley Nowell's death. According to the liner notes, the album is dedicated to him. After the break up, its surviving members Eric Wilson and Bud Gaugh reformed Sublime in 2009 signed with the record label Fueled by Ramen and went to work on its first full-length studio album.

Sublime with Rome nace en Enero del 2010 como una colaboración musical entre Eric Wilson y Bud Gaugh, ex integrantes de la banda Sublime, y el cantante y guitarrista Rome Ramirez. El grupo lleva a cabo principalmente canciones de Sublime, que fue encabezada por Bradley Nowell hasta su muerte en 1996. Sublime with Rome is a musical collaboration between Eric Wilson, formerly of the band Sublime, and singer and guitarist Rome Ramirez. The group chiefly performs songs by Sublime, which was fronted by Bradley Nowell until his death in 1996.
Ramirez began performing with Bud Gaugh and Wilson in 2009, where they played under the name "Sublime", until Nowell's estate issued a legal challenge to the use of the trademarked name for a venture not including Nowell. As a result, they changed their name to "Sublime with Rome" in January 2010. The group released two albums, "Yours Truly" (2011) and "Sirens" (2015). Gaugh left the band on December 10, 2011.

Yours Truly is the debut album by rock group Sublime with Rome, which was released on July 12, 2011. It is the first album since the original Sublime disbanded in 1996, due to lead singer and guitarist Bradley Nowell's death. According to the liner notes, the album is dedicated to him. After the break up, its surviving members Eric Wilson and Bud Gaugh reformed Sublime in 2009 signed with the record label Fueled by Ramen and went to work on its first full-length studio album.

At AES 2014, Audio-Technica had an informative Ask Me Anything session with Ryan Hewitt.
Ryan began his musical career by taking up drums and piano in the third grade, and set up his first primitive recording studio at age 10. This display of interest prompted his father, remote recording engineer David Hewitt, to take him on the road at age 12. Over the course of 15 years on the Remote Recording Services trucks, Ryan learned to get sessions going quickly, pay attention to details and capture the moment on tape at all costs.
After receiving a degree in Electrical Engineering from Tufts University, Ryan moved to New York City to take a job with Sony Music Studios. Once there, he quickly moved up the ranks to assist and learn from some of the best engineers and producers in the business, including Michael Brauer, Phil Ramone, Bob Power and Elliot Scheiner. Moving to Los Angeles in the autumn of 2000, Ryan landed at Cello Studios, again moving to the head of the class and working with top engineers such as Jim Scott, Richard Dodd and Ed Thacker.
Today, Ryan is emulating his mentors and recording, mixing and producing projects by diverse artists like the Avett Brothers, The Band Perry, Sheryl Crow, Brandi Carlile, Jamie Cullum, the Red Hot Chili Peppers, blink-182, Flogging Molly, The Alkaline Trio, Three Days Grace, We Are Scientists, Tom Petty and John Frusciante. Additionally, producers such as Rick Rubin, Matt Serletic, Gregg Wells, Jeff Trott and Max Martin have called on Ryan for his work ethic and sense of humor as much as for his recording and mixing skills. In his spare time, Ryan graciously writes for the Audio-Technica blog, imparting his knowledge and advice to readers all over the world.

Here's something definitely different from what I usually upload, a post-Sundance Devo concert! This was actually the last *concert Devo gave in 1999 (there were two more performances but I wouldn't count them as concerts). It's just your usual post-Sundance concert besides a surprise performance of "Fountain Of Filth"! It's one of the three known performances of it that was recorded (other two in very late '79). That's definitely the highlite of the show, and really the only interesting thing from this half-assed greatest hits setlist. At least this is from when they didn't constantly play their greatest hits. The audio is really good, but it's pickin' up a LOT of Josh. Both Jerry and Mark's singing is kinda bad, but it shouldn't be too bothersome.

A Perfect Circle nacieron de una manera muy espontánea; el guitarrista Billy Howerdel había conocido al cantante Maynard James Keenan cuando Tool habían sido teloneros de Fishbone en el año 1992. Howerdel ejercía en aquellos momentos de técnico de guitarra para estos últimos; y aquello fue el orígen de la amistad surgida entre los dos músicos. Pocos años más tarde Howerdel estaba buscando una habitación para alojarse en la zona del norte de Hollywood y el mismo Keenan le ofreció su propio piso.
Ello facilitó y le dió la oportunidad a Billy de mostrar algunas de sus grabaciones caseras a Keenan; quien de forma voluntaria se ofreció como vocalista para cantar encima de ellas sólo a modo de prueba. Aunque Howerdel prefería de antemano una voz femenina, quedó satisfecho con el resultado y a raiz de dicha colaboración musical entre ambos surgió la idea de formar un grupo para poder plasmar esos temas. El siguiente paso para llevar a cabo el nuevo proyecto bautizado como A Perfect Circle era reclutar al resto de músicos.
La primera formación se constituyó en torno a ellos dos junto al también guitarrista Troy Van Leeuwen, la bajista y violinista Paz Lenchantin y el ex-batería de Primus Tim Alexander. La banda ofreció una serie de conciertos en la zona de Los Angeles durante los últimos meses del año 1999 que aprovecharon para rodar y pulir las piezas compuestas de cara a una futura publicación; unos recitales que servían también de paso para presentar de manera oficial el grupo y evaluar su inmediata respuesta ante el público.
Esta grabación pertenece a uno de esas actuaciones previas a la grabación de su debut discográfico "Mer De Noms" (2000), en la primerísima etapa de un grupo que practicamente se acababa de estrenar en directo; incluso algunas de las letras son diferentes a como aparecieron en su versión definitiva de estudio. Además hay que subrayar que se trata de uno de los pocos documentos que existen de la banda todavía con el batería Tim Alexander en sus filas, que sería sustituído muy poco tiempo después por Josh Freese.

A Perfect Circle nacieron de una manera muy espontánea; el guitarrista Billy Howerdel había conocido al cantante Maynard James Keenan cuando Tool habían sido teloneros de Fishbone en el año 1992. Howerdel ejercía en aquellos momentos de técnico de guitarra para estos últimos; y aquello fue el orígen de la amistad surgida entre los dos músicos. Pocos años más tarde Howerdel estaba buscando una habitación para alojarse en la zona del norte de Hollywood y el mismo Keenan le ofreció su propio piso.
Ello facilitó y le dió la oportunidad a Billy de mostrar algunas de sus grabaciones caseras a Keenan; quien de forma voluntaria se ofreció como vocalista para cantar encima de ellas sólo a modo de prueba. Aunque Howerdel prefería de antemano una voz femenina, quedó satisfecho con el resultado y a raiz de dicha colaboración musical entre ambos surgió la idea de formar un grupo para poder plasmar esos temas. El siguiente paso para llevar a cabo el nuevo proyecto bautizado como A Perfect Circle era reclutar al resto de músicos.
La primera formación se constituyó en torno a ellos dos junto al también guitarrista Troy Van Leeuwen, la bajista y violinista Paz Lenchantin y el ex-batería de Primus Tim Alexander. La banda ofreció una serie de conciertos en la zona de Los Angeles durante los últimos meses del año 1999 que aprovecharon para rodar y pulir las piezas compuestas de cara a una futura publicación; unos recitales que servían también de paso para presentar de manera oficial el grupo y evaluar su inmediata respuesta ante el público.
Esta grabación pertenece a uno de esas actuaciones previas a la grabación de su debut discográfico "Mer De Noms" (2000), en la primerísima etapa de un grupo que practicamente se acababa de estrenar en directo; incluso algunas de las letras son diferentes a como aparecieron en su versión definitiva de estudio. Además hay que subrayar que se trata de uno de los pocos documentos que existen de la banda todavía con el batería Tim Alexander en sus filas, que sería sustituído muy poco tiempo después por Josh Freese.
