1391: Year of National Production, Supporting Iranian Capital and Labor- Iran Today-04-06-2012

Iran has just started a New Year, the year 1391. Iran's New Year comes in spring, the season of renewal, and as everyone makes their New Year resolutions, goals are also set for the nation as a whole. For more than a decade it has become customary for the leader of the Islamic Republic of Iran to announce those goals on the outset of the New Year. For the last four, the leader has focused on the economy. In 1390 he called for Economic Jihad, in 1389 for the reformation of the country's consumption patterns, in 1388 for more initiative and hard work on the part of the nation. And this year he called on everyone to support national production efforts and to help protect the work and capital of Iranian citizens. But the slogan has its critics, who say setting goals after the year's budget has been thrashed out and approved in parliament is futile. They say it's all words, with no actions supporting them. That said it doesn't seem the rationale behind the leader's New Year announcements is to channel funds and resources, but to draw the people's attention to an issue of importance, to indoctrinate new ways of thinking, to create a healthier cultural atmosphere and so on. Gholam-Ali Hada'd A'del, one of the leader's senior advisors, says "the point of setting goals for the country is to focus the nation's attention on a specific issue, and to also highlight the problems that issue entails." In this edition of the show we want to put the goals set for this year into context. It's just one sentence, but a lot lies behind it, a lot of energy will have to go into realizing it, and there will be challenges along the way.
