care.data - what is going to happen ?

GP practices nationwide will soon be required to supply patients' personal and confidential medical information, on a regular and continuous basis, to the Health and Social Care Information Centre (HSCIC).

Under the Health and Social Care Act 2012, GP practices have no choice but to allow the HSCIC to extract this information.

This project, called care.data, is administered by the HSCIC using software and services provided by a private sector company (ATOS).

When will this take place ?

The HSCIC states that care.data extractions will start from GP surgeries in March 2014.

..really???

Look out for this innocent looking document that will arrive through your door in the near future

To find out what is going on please see - http://www.care-data.info/

You will need to act soon if you want to prevent your health data being uploaded from your GP surgery.

Thanks

thanks for the heads up, we receive a copy of that document today.

You can opt out

I dealt with this issue with my GPs before Xmas but have not seen the leaflet referred to.
Please be aware that you have the option to opt out. Simply write asap to your GP asking for the dissent codes (ie for sharing in and sharing out) to be added to your notes.
Remember to ask that they write back to you confirming they have done this.

As an aside, I also spent out that I only consent to my medical records being seen by people who need to see the as an essential part of the treatment for a specific medical condition they may be treating me for. I then got a call from an admin assistant to say she had entered the dissent codes and saw on my records that I had objected previously!
