In preparation for the 2012 Christmas Lectures Dr Peter Wothers heads off to the University of Leicester to conduct an extraordinary experiment - reacting the most reactive metal in the periodic table (Caesium) with the most reactive non-metal (Fluorine).
Due to the extreme reactivity of the two elements, Fluorine expert Professor Eric Hope is on hand to enable the experiment to be conducted safely.
We believe this is the first time the reaction has been caught on camera.

Is cesium really as reactive as people say it is?
Does it catch fire on contact with air?
Does it explode on contact with water?
etc.
Well yes, it is pretty reactive stuff. It reacts with air almost immediately. However if its a lump of cesium, it takes a time to heat up. You get a little film, or drop of cesium in air and it will catch fire pretty quick. And yes, it explodes pretty quick on contact with water. However it really isnt that different in reactivity from sodium potassium alloy, which casts doubt on many of the hand waving arguments about cesium being the most reactive of the alkali metals.

We tried to break a 25g cesium (caesium) ampoule in the air, but it started to rain. The bomb group helped us with a detonating cord.

So here's a question: when we were filming our caesium in water, we expected it to cause a big explosion, much like the rubidium did. Instead we saw this: a series of small, pulsating explosions as it sank. We shot this three times and it was the same each time. Being curious folk, we're trying to find out why - we have a few ideas, but does anyone know for sure? Please help!
Background info: the caesium was kept in liquid nitrogen before the drop and fell from about a metre. The water is at room temperature and contains phenolphthalein.

Caesium or cesium (
/ˈsiːziəm/ SEE-zee-əm) is the chemical element with the symbol Cs and atomic number 55. It is a soft, silvery-gold alkali metal with a melting point of 28 °C (82 °F), which makes it one of only five elemental metals that are liquid at (or near) room temperature. Caesium is an alkali metal and has physical and chemical properties similar to those of rubidium and potassium. The metal is extremely reactive and pyrophoric, reacting with water even at −116 °C (−177 °F). It is the least electronegative element having a stable isotope, caesium-133. Caesium is mined mostly from pollucite, while the radioisotopes, especially caesium-137, a fission product, are extracted from waste produced by nuclear reactors.
Two German chemists, Robert Bunsen and Gustav Kirchhoff, discovered caesium in 1860 by the newly developed method of flame spectroscopy. The first small-scale applications for caesium were as a "getter" in vacuum tubes and in photoelectric cells. In 1967, a specific frequency from the emission spectrum of caesium-133 was chosen to be used in the definition of the second by the International System of Units. Since then, caesium has been widely used in atomic clocks.

prelude to an upcoming project [to be announced]. 8D many of you have commented that my protective garb is either excessive or insufficient. the consensus among experts in this field seems to be that such measures are not necessary for the types of samples i have in my collection. sealed source discs are generally considered safe, as long as they are kept intact. one more correction: Cs-137 does not emit alpha radiation. its primary mode of decay is beta, and secondarily it also produces gamma through internal transition of the nuclear isomer Barium-137m.

Cesium, the most reactive Alkali metal!
Is cesium really as reactive as people say it is? Does it catch fire on contact with air? Does it explode on contact with water? etc. Well yes, it is pretty reactive stuff. It reacts with air almost immediately. However if its a lump of cesium, it takes a time to heat up. You get a little film, or drop of cesium in air and it will catch fire pretty quick. And yes, it explodes pretty quick on contact with water. However it really isnt that different in reactivity from sodium potassium alloy, which casts doubt on many of the hand waving arguments about cesium being the most reactive of the alkali metals. -

We tried to break a 25g cesium (caesium) ampoule in the air, but it started to rain. The bomb group helped us with a detonating cord. So here's a question: when we were filming our caesium in water, we expected it to cause a big explosion, much like the rubidium did. Instead we saw this: a series of small, pulsating explosions as it sank. We shot this three times and it was the same each time. Being curious folk, we're trying to find out why - we have a few ideas, but does anyone know for sure? Please help! Background info: the caesium was kept in liquid nitrogen before the drop and fell from about a metre. The water is at room temperature and contains phenolphthalein. For best results, watch in HD. -

prelude to an upcoming project [to be announced]. 8D many of you have commented that my protective garb is either excessive or insufficient. the consensus among experts in this field seems to be that such measures are not necessary for the types of samples i have in my collection. sealed source discs are generally considered safe, as long as they are kept intact. one more correction: Cs-137 does not emit alpha radiation. its primary mode of decay is beta, and secondarily it also produces gamma through internal transition of the nuclear isomer Barium-137m. -
