Kranj
Kranj (pronounced [ˈkɾàːn]; also known by other alternative names) is the fourth-largest city in Slovenia, with a population of 54,500 (2010). It is located approximately 20 kilometres (12 miles) northwest of Ljubljana. The centre of the City Municipality of Kranj and of the traditional region of Upper Carniola (northwestern Slovenia) is a mainly industrial city with significant electronics and rubber industries.
Geography
The nucleus of the city is a well-preserved medieval old town, built at the confluence of the Kokra and Sava rivers. The city is served by the Kranj railway station on the route from Ljubljana to Munich, Germany (via Jesenice and Villach, Austria) and a highway. Slovenia's national airport, Ljubljana Jože Pučnik Airport (in Brnik) is also very close to Kranj, considerably more so than its nominal client, Ljubljana.
Name
Kranj was attested in written sources in the 5th century and c. 670 as Carnium (and as via Chreinariorum in 973, actum Kreine in 1050–65, in loco Chreina in 1065–77, and Chrainburch in 1291). The Slovene name is drerived from Slavic *Korn’ь, borrowed from Romance Carnium in late antiquity. Like the Latin regional name Carnia, it is derived from the northern Italic (Celtic) tribe known as the Carnī (Greek: Κάρνοι). The name of the tribe is probably derived from the Celtic root *karno- 'peak, hill, pile of stones'. The German name of the town was Krainburg. The name of the historical region of Carniola is a Latin diminutive form of Carnia.

Republika Slovenija ,abbr.: RS), is a nation state in southern Central Europe, located at the crossroads of main European cultural and trade routes. It is bordered by Italy to the west, Austria to the north, Hungary to the northeast, Croatia to the south and southeast, and the Adriatic Sea to the southwest. It covers 20,273 square kilometers (7,827 sq mi) and has a population of 2.06 million. It is a parliamentary republic and a member of the United Nations, European Union, and NATO.The capital and largest city is Ljubljana.
The territory is mostly mountainous with a mainly continental climate, with the exception of the Slovene Littoral that has a sub-Mediterranean climate and the north-western area that has an Alpine climate. Additionally, the Dinaric Alps and the Pannonian Plain meet on the territory of Slovenia. The country, marked by a significant biological diversity, is one of the most water-rich in Europe, with a dense river network, a rich aquifer system, and significant karst underground watercourses. Over half of the territory is covered by forest. The human settlement of Slovenia is dispersed and uneven.

Slovenian wine
Slovenian wine is wine from Slovenia. Viticulture and winemaking has existed in this region since the time of the Celts and Illyrians tribes, long before the Romans would introduce winemaking to the lands of France, Spain and Germany.
Today Slovenia has more than 28,000 wineries making between 80 and 90 million litres annually from the country's 22,300 ha of vineyards. About 75% of the country's production is white wine. Almost all of the wine is consumed domestically with only 6.1 million l a year being exported—mostly to the United States, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, and lately the Czech Republic. Most of the country's wine production falls under the classification of premium (vrhunsko) wine with less than 30% classified as basic table wine (namizno vino). Slovenia has three principal wine regions: the Drava Valley, Lower Sava Valley and Slovenian Littoral.
History
Unlike many of the major European wine regions, Slovenia's viticultural history predates Roman influences and can be traced back to the early Celtic and Illyrian tribes who began cultivating vines for wine production sometime between the 5th and 4th centuries BC. By the Middle Ages, the Christian Church controlled most of the region's wine production through the monasteries. Under the rule of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, privately owned wineries had some presence in the region but steady declined following the empire's fall and the beginning of Yugoslavia. By the end of the Second World War, co-operatives controlled nearly all of the region's wine production and quality was very low as the emphasis was on the bulk wine production. The exception was the few small private wineries in the Drava Valley region that were able to continue operation.

The 2004 European election was the sixth election to the European Parliament. However, as Slovenia had only joined the European Union earlier that month, it was the first election European election held in that state. The election took place on June 13.
The biggest surprise was the victory of the New Slovenia party over the Liberal Democracy of Slovenia and the defeat of the Slovene People's Party, which did not win a seat. The parties on the right of centre that form the opposition in the Slovenian national parliament won this election.
2009
The 2009 European election was the seventh election to the European Parliament. The number of seats was increased to eight.

I spent 7 days travelling round one of Europe's best kept secrets, the gorgeous country of Slovenia.
Starting in the picturesque capital of Ljubljana, I then made my way round to Lake Bohinj, where I took the cable car up to Mt Vogel.
I went white water rafting near Bled before swimming in the crystal clear waters of Lake Bled itself.
Then I travelled round to the Soča Valley and stayed in Bovec where I went canyoning, zip-lining and took the cable car up to Mt Kanin.

Join Stevie Kim on another "On the Road Edition" (found here and on the Italian Wine Podcast) where she travels to yet another wine destination. Today she is in Brda, Slovenia! She has traveled here to take part in the Masterclass “Grand Vertical Tasting of the Finest Rebula Wines”. Since there were plenty of wine producers, influencers, writers and educators present at the event, Stevie was able to sit down with several fascinating characters to get their take on wine and culture in this region!
Brda is the home of Rebula aka Ribolla Gialla!
Brda has been home to Rebula since the Middle Ages and records show that right here, on the terraces carved from the "opoka" soil, where the Alpine and Mediterranean climates meet, the deal conditions exist for this grape variety to thrive. This mix of unique terroir combined with a grape variety with deep historical roots in the area produces authentic and expressive wines with a distinctive mineral character. Combining an original and modern approach to vinification with the experience of past generations; the ambitious winemakers of Brda make wines from Rebula which are imbued with a special quality, unique to this region.

The trip put the spotlight on the history and various styles of Rebula (Ribolla Gialla) wine in Vipava Valley, western Slovenia.
To say the trip was outstanding is an understatement. Many people who were tasting Slovenian wines for the first time were blown away. The event focused on small producers and all types of Rebula wines were present, from fresh and macerated to minimal intervention and conventional.

I spent 7 days travelling round one of Europe's best kept secrets, the gorgeous country of Slovenia.
Starting in the picturesque capital of Ljubljana, I then made my way round to Lake Bohinj, where I took the cable car up to Mt Vogel.
I went white water rafting near Bled before swimming in the crystal clear waters of Lake Bled itself.
Then I travelled round to the Soča Valley and stayed in Bovec where I went canyoning, zip-lining and took the cable car up to Mt Kanin.

Kranj
Kranj (pronounced [ˈkɾàːn]; also known by other alternative names) is the fourth-largest city in Slovenia, with a population of 54,500 (2010). It is located approximately 20 kilometres (12 miles) northwest of Ljubljana. The centre of the City Municipality of Kranj and of the traditional region of Upper Carniola (northwestern Slovenia) is a mainly industrial city with significant electronics and rubber industries.
Geography
The nucleus of the city is a well-preserved medieval old town, built at the confluence of the Kokra and Sava rivers. The city is served by the Kranj railway station on the route from Ljubljana to Munich, Germany (via Jesenice and Villach, Austria) and a highway. Slovenia's national airport, Ljubljana Jože Pučnik Airport (in Brnik) is also very close to Kranj, considerably more so than its nominal client, Ljubljana.
Name
Kranj was attested in written sources in the 5th century and c. 670 as Carnium (and as via Chreinariorum in 973, actum Kreine in 1050–65, in loco Chreina in 1065–77, and Chrainburch in 1291). The Slovene name is drerived from Slavic *Korn’ь, borrowed from Romance Carnium in late antiquity. Like the Latin regional name Carnia, it is derived from the northern Italic (Celtic) tribe known as the Carnī (Greek: Κάρνοι). The name of the tribe is probably derived from the Celtic root *karno- 'peak, hill, pile of stones'. The German name of the town was Krainburg. The name of the historical region of Carniola is a Latin diminutive form of Carnia.

She has traveled here to take part in the Masterclass “Grand Vertical Tasting of the Finest Rebula Wines”. Since there were plenty of wine producers, influencers, writers and educators present at the event, Stevie was able to sit down with several fascinating characters to get their take on wine and culture in this region!
Brda is the home of Rebula aka Ribolla Gialla!
Brda has been home to Rebula since the Middle Ages and records show that right here, on the terraces carved from the "opoka" soil, where the Alpine and Mediterranean climates meet, the deal conditions exist for this grape variety to thrive. This mix of unique terroir combined with a grape variety with deep historical roots in the area produces authentic and expressive wines with a distinctive mineral character. Combining an original and modern approach to vinification with the experience of past generations; the ambitious winemakers of Brda make wines from Rebula which are imbued with a special quality, unique to this region.

We were invited to "Vipavska Rebula Cesarjev Ižbor 1503" (Vipava Rebula: The Emperor’s Choice Since 1503), the first international showcase of Rebula wine from the Vipava Valley. The trip put the spotlight on the history and various styles of Rebula (Ribolla Gialla) wine in Vipava Valley, western Slovenia.
To say the trip was outstanding is an understatement. Many people who were tasting Slovenian wines for the first time were blown away. The event focused on small producers and all types of Rebula wines were present, from fresh and macerated to minimal intervention and conventional.
