Ramesses II (born 1303 B.C. - died July or August 1213 B.C.), son of Seti I & popularly known as "Ramesses the Great" was the third pharaoh of the 19th dynasty of ancient Egypt. The most powerful pharaoh of his time, he was referred as the "great ancestor" by later Egyptians. His reign lasted just over 66 years, and is thought to have finally died in his early nineties.
ARTIST NOTES: This is a two-parter, mainly to stave off complaints about timeline accuracy. I've already stated that I prefer to do reconstructions of people in their prime, as more of their features are intact than in later life. So it is with Ramesses, here, I built a face of a pharaoh in his prime before moving time forward closer to the face that would have been seen in his much older years.
**Inevitably, the subject of Ramesses' "red" hair has been thrown into the ring. What seems to cause the most sound and fury on this subject is what image pops into most people's heads when they hear "red hair". To many, that also suggests pale skin, like a redhead from Scotland or Ireland. "Red" hair exists in Asia as well as in the Aborigine tribes of Australia, as well as in other cultures spanning the globe for which red hair is not a prerequisite feature for pale skin.
So, to claim that Ramesses was "fair skinned" or even white based on the preponderance of his red hair is faulty logic. For the record, "Mediterranean" skin is not "fair" unless it is in comparison to Negroid skin. Otherwise, it is a mid-range tone as in peoples from Burma, Saudi Arabia, India, Cuba, and Mexico---countries which, Egypt included, sit right on the line of the Tropic of Cancer north of the Equator.

The temple at Abu Simbel, which Ramses II (the Egyptian Pharaoh who ruled Egypt for 66 years from 1270 to 1213 BC) ordered built near the border of Nubia and Upper Egypt, was dedicated to two sun gods, Amun-Re and Re-Horakhte. Standing 100 feet (33 meters) tall, the temple was carved into an already-standing sandstone mountain on the banks of the Nile. Four colossal statues of Ramses, each 66 feet (22 meters) high, guard the entrance to the temple. Rising to the pharaoh's knees are smaller statues of family members: his mother; favorite wife, Nefertari; and son, Prince Amonherkhepshef. Inside the temple, three connected halls extend 185 feet (56 meters) into the mountain. Images of the king's life and many achievements adorn the walls. Rock-cut temples may have been especially significant in ancient Egypt because the bulge in the otherwise flat land may have signified the location where the gods emerged from the Earth, says Williams.

Ramses II`s was Caucasian-North African.
Ramesses II had been red-haired. It was concluded that these red pigments did not result from the hair somehow fading, or otherwise altering post-mortem, but did indeed represent Ramesses' natural hair colour. Ceccaldi also studied a cross-section of the hairs, and he determined from their oval shape, that Ramesses had been "cymotrich" (wavy-haired). Finally, he stated that such a combination of features showed that Ramesses had been a "leucoderm" (white-skinned person). [Balout, et al. (1985) 254-257.]
Balout and Roubet were under no illusions as to the significance of this discovery, and they concluded as follows:
"After having achieved this immense work, an important scientific conclusion remains to be drawn: the anthropological study and the microscopic analysis of hair, carried out by four laboratories: Judiciary Medecine (Professor Ceccaldi), Société L'Oréal, Atomic Energy Commission, and Institut Textile de France showed that Ramses II was a 'leucoderm', that is a fair-skinned man, near to the Prehistoric and Antiquity Mediterraneans, or briefly, of the Berber of Africa." [Balout, et al. (1985) 383.]

Ramesses II (variously transliterated as "Rameses" (/ˈræməsiːz/) or "Ramses" (/ˈræmsiːz/ or /ˈræmziːz/); born c. 1303 BC; died July or August 1213 BC; reigned 1279–1213 BC), also known as Ramesses the Great, was the third pharaoh of the Nineteenth Dynasty of Egypt. He is often regarded as the greatest, most celebrated, and most powerful pharaoh of the Egyptian Empire. His successors and later Egyptians called him the "Great Ancestor". Ramesses II led several military expeditions into the Levant, reasserting Egyptian control over Canaan. He also led expeditions to the south, into Nubia, commemorated in inscriptions at Beit el-Wali and Gerf Hussein.
At age fourteen, Ramesses was appointed Prince Regent by his father Seti I. He is believed to have taken the throne in his late teens and is known to have ruled Egypt from 1279 BC to 1213 BC. Estimates of his age at death vary; 90 or 91 is considered most likely. Ramesses II celebrated an unprecedented 14 sed festivals (the first held after thirty years of a pharaoh's reign, and then every three years) during his reign—more than any other pharaoh. On his death, he was buried in a tomb in the Valley of the Kings; his body was later moved to a royal cache where it was discovered in 1881, and is now on display in the Cairo Museum.

Ramesses II (born 1303 B.C. - died July or August 1213 B.C.), son of Seti I & popularly known as "Ramesses the Great" was the third pharaoh of the 19th dynasty of ancient Egypt. The most powerful pharaoh of his time, he was referred as the "great ancestor" by later Egyptians. His reign lasted just over 66 years, and is thought to have finally died in his early nineties.
ARTIST NOTES: This is a two-parter, mainly to stave off complaints about timeline accuracy. I've already stated that I prefer to do reconstructions of people in their prime, as more of their features are intact than in later life. So it is with Ramesses, here, I built a face of a pharaoh in his prime before moving time forward closer to the face that would have been seen in his much older years.
**Inevitably, the subject of Ramesses' "red" hair has been thrown into the ring. What seems to cause the most sound and fury on this subject is what image pops into most people's heads when they hear "red hair". To many, that also suggests pale skin, like a redhead from Scotland or Ireland. "Red" hair exists in Asia as well as in the Aborigine tribes of Australia, as well as in other cultures spanning the globe for which red hair is not a prerequisite feature for pale skin.
So, to claim that Ramesses was "fair skinned" or even white based on the preponderance of his red hair is faulty logic. For the record, "Mediterranean" skin is not "fair" unless it is in comparison to Negroid skin. Otherwise, it is a mid-range tone as in peoples from Burma, Saudi Arabia, India, Cuba, and Mexico---countries which, Egypt included, sit right on the line of the Tropic of Cancer north of the Equator.

The temple at Abu Simbel, which Ramses II (the Egyptian Pharaoh who ruled Egypt for 66 years from 1270 to 1213 BC) ordered built near the border of Nubia and Upper Egypt, was dedicated to two sun gods, Amun-Re and Re-Horakhte. Standing 100 feet (33 meters) tall, the temple was carved into an already-standing sandstone mountain on the banks of the Nile. Four colossal statues of Ramses, each 66 feet (22 meters) high, guard the entrance to the temple. Rising to the pharaoh's knees are smaller statues of family members: his mother; favorite wife, Nefertari; and son, Prince Amonherkhepshef. Inside the temple, three connected halls extend 185 feet (56 meters) into the mountain. Images of the king's life and many achievements adorn the walls. Rock-cut temples may have been especially significant in ancient Egypt because the bulge in the otherwise flat land may have signified the location where the gods emerged from the Earth, says Williams.

Ramesses II had been red-haired. It was concluded that these red pigments did not result from the hair somehow fading, or otherwise altering post-mortem, but did indeed represent Ramesses' natural hair colour. Ceccaldi also studied a cross-section of the hairs, and he determined from their oval shape, that Ramesses had been "cymotrich" (wavy-haired). Finally, he stated that such a combination of features showed that Ramesses had been a "leucoderm" (white-skinned person). [Balout, et al. (1985) 254-257.]
Balout and Roubet were under no illusions as to the significance of this discovery, and they concluded as follows:
"After having achieved this immense work, an important scientific conclusion remains to be drawn: the anthropological study and the microscopic analysis of hair, carried out by four laboratories: Judiciary Medecine (Professor Ceccaldi), Société L'Oréal, Atomic Energy Commission, and Institut Textile de France showed that Ramses II was a 'leucoderm', that is a fair-skinned man, near to the Prehistoric and Antiquity Mediterraneans, or briefly, of the Berber of Africa." [Balout, et al. (1985) 383.]

An ISIS-affiliated news agency Thursday confirmed the death of the group’s Minister of War Abu Omar Al-Shishani in March during combat in the south of Mosul, Newsweek reported.The Georgian national, known by his nom de guerre “Omar the Chechen,” was one of the most-wanted ISIS militants. The U.S. government placed a $5 million bounty on him. Amaq news agency said he was killed in clashes in the Iraqi city of Shirqat, the report said....
