Interview with Produer/Director of Nagina, Harmesh Malhotra.
Q: Tell us about Sridevi and Nagina. How did you convince her to play a snake?
Harmesh Malhotra: I had that subject with me for years but I didn't know which actress could be approached for the role. I first thought of casting Jayaprada because I thought she was beautiful and had lovely eyes. When I narrated the subject to her she did not identify with the subject at all.
Then I met Sridevi on the sets of Subhash Ghai's Karma and I asked her to spare some time to listen to a story. She gave me one hour and when I completed the narration she just turned to her mother and said mummy I'm doing this role. We finalised everything in a month. I still remember the date when we started shooting. It was May 24 just before the monsoon arrived in Bombay.
Sridevi is one of the most professional and gifted actresses in Indian cinema. She endowed that complex role with a power and energy that remains unmatched. She gives the impression of being aloof and cold but scratch the surface and you'll find a warm considerate human being. Like Rekha who gives the feeling that she is unapproachable and difficult. She is yet another actress who is very dedicated and sincere and extremely receptive to challenges.

Nagina is 1986 fantasy Hindi film, produced and directed by Harmesh Malhotra, written by Jagmohan Kapoor, and starring Sridevi and Rishi Kapoor in lead roles. This was the second women-centric commercial film of actress Sridevi after Tohfa.
Plot
Rajiv (Rishi Kapoor) comes from a wealthy land-owning family, and lives in a palatial home with his mother, who would like him to get married to a beautiful young woman named Vijaya Singh, the only daughter of Thakur Ajay Singh (Prem Chopra). Rajiv, however, is in love with Rajni (Sridevi), who is an orphan without connections. When Rajiv informs his mother of his intent to marry Rajni, she refuses to give her blessings, but relents after a favourable meeting with Rajni. The marriage is arranged and they enjoy their marriage - until the arrival of Bhairo Nath (Amrish Puri), a sadhu capable of controlling snakes. He informs Rajiv's mum that Rajni is a shape-shifting venomous snake who has married Rajiv to avenge the death of her spouse during Rajiv's childhood. To remove her from the household, Bhairo and his disciples do a snake dance song, forcing Rajni to dance for them as she is a naga. However, when Rajiv comes into the house, Rajni escapes, only to be caught by Bhairo again, who reveals his plot, to control the world with the Mani, a sacred jewel that only Rajni knows is hidden. However, Rajiv comes and engages in a fight with the sadhu. The sadhu dies, and Rajiv and Rajni live happily ever after.

Plot: Vidya is a school-teacher in Love Dale High School, and has approximately 12 children in her classroom. One day they decide to participate in a inter-school competition and travel out of town. Vidya and the children manage to escape, but are caught and imprisoned in an underground cave. Through a snake-hole they manage to escape, this time aided by one of the masked men, and find shelter with a kind-hearted Forest Officer Ranjit Singh and his wife Jaswanti. The masked bandits follow them, locate them, kill the masked man, Jaswanti and Ranjit Singh, finally managing to entrap them. Looks like all ways of escape are closed to Vidya and her school-children, and they may be taken, held hostage until the bandits receive their ransom, and thereafter possibly get killed.

Interview with Produer/Director of Nagina, Harmesh Malhotra.
Q: Tell us about Sridevi and Nagina. How did you convince her to play a snake?
Harmesh Malhotra: I had that subject with me for years but I didn't know which actress could be approached for the role. I first thought of casting Jayaprada because I thought she was beautiful and had lovely eyes. When I narrated the subject to her she did not identify with the subject at all.
Then I met Sridevi on the sets of Subhash Ghai's Karma and I asked her to spare some time to listen to a story. She gave me one hour and when I completed the narration she just turned to her mother and said mummy I'm doing this role. We finalised everything in a month. I still remember the date when we started shooting. It was May 24 just before the monsoon arrived in Bombay.
Sridevi is one of the most professional and gifted actresses in Indian cinema. She endowed that complex role with a power and energy that remains unmatched. She gives the impression of being aloof and cold but scratch the surface and you'll find a warm considerate human being. Like Rekha who gives the feeling that she is unapproachable and difficult. She is yet another actress who is very dedicated and sincere and extremely receptive to challenges.

Harmesh Malhotra: I had that subject with me for years but I didn't know which actress could be approached for the role. I first thought of casting Jayaprada because I thought she was beautiful and had lovely eyes. When I narrated the subject to her she did not identify with the subject at all.
Then I met Sridevi on the sets of Subhash Ghai's Karma and I asked her to spare some time to listen to a story. She gave me one hour and when I completed the narration she just turned to her mother and said mummy I'm doing this role. We finalised everything in a month. I still remember the date when we started shooting. It was May 24 just before the monsoon arrived in Bombay.
Sridevi is one of the most professional and gifted actresses in Indian cinema. She endowed that complex role with a power and energy that remains unmatched. She gives the impression of being aloof and cold but scratch the surface and you'll find a warm considerate human being. Like Rekha who gives the feeling that she is unapproachable and difficult. She is yet another actress who is very dedicated and sincere and extremely receptive to challenges.

Rajiv comes from a very wealthy family, and lives in a palatial home with his mother, who would like him to get married to a beautiful young woman named Vijaya Singh, the only daughter of Thakur Ajay Singh. But Rajiv is in love with a woman named Rajni, who is an orphan and has no family background. When Rajiv mentions this to his mother, she opposes this marriage, but relents when she meets with Rajni and sees that she is a indeed a beautiful woman. Both get married and live harmoniously for quite some time - until the arrival of Bhairo Nnath a religious man, who is capable of controlling snakes. He informs Rajiv's mom that the woman, Rajni, is a shape-shifting venomous snake who has married Rajiv to avenge the death of her spouse years ago when Rajiv was a child. What Rajiv's mom does not know that Bhairavnath has a secret agenda in entrapping Rajni, a secret - the knowledge of which will shatter and change their lives forever. This movie to be followed by a sequel called "Nigahen: Nagina Part II".

Q: Tell us about Sridevi and Nagina. How did you convince her to play a snake?
