Making your own lumber is a dream for most woodworkers. It's not always easy to find the logs, then to have the equipment that will handle cutting them into usable lumber. There is not a lot of options when it comes to cutting lumber, and you always need to work safely. Commercial saw mills have not always been as safe as they are now and it's a good lesson in working safely, even with smaller equipment. When cutting lumber from logs, I always want to make sure it is a size that is something I can easily handle in terms of both size and weight.
Cutting lumber from logs is one of the more exciting things in woodworking. Almost every log has something interesting inside. It's just like opening a gift ... you never know what is going to be inside. I might be just plain lumber or it could have some figure, some knots, some swirling grain or all sorts of different effect.
When working with logs that you can see spalting when they are cut, you still never know what is going to be inside, or it could be that the spalting has gone too far and the logs are more rot than they are usable wood. That's the beauty and the fun of cutting your own lumber.

Lumber (also known as timber) is wood in any of its stages from felling to readiness for use as structural material for construction, or wood pulp for paper production.
Lumber is supplied either rough or finished. Besides pulpwood, rough lumber is the raw material for furniture-making and other items requiring additional cutting and shaping. It is available in many species, usually hardwoods.[citation needed]Finished lumber is supplied in standard sizes, mostly for the construction industry, primarily softwood from coniferous species including pine, fir and spruce (collectively known as Spruce-pine-fir), cedar, and hemlock, but also some hardwood, for high-grade flooring.
In the United Kingdom and other Commonwealth Countries such as Australia and New Zealand, timber is a term used for sawn wood products, such as floor boards, whereas generally in the United States and Canada, it refers to felled trees, later milled into boards referred to as lumber. "Timber" is also used there to describe sawn lumber not less than 5 inches (127 mm) in its smallest dimension. An example of the latter is the often partially finished lumber used in timber-frame construction.

Making your own lumber is a dream for most woodworkers. It's not always easy to find the logs, then to have the equipment that will handle cutting them into usable lumber. There is not a lot of options when it comes to cutting lumber, and you always need to work safely. Commercial saw mills have not always been as safe as they are now and it's a good lesson in working safely, even with smaller equipment. When cutting lumber from logs, I always want to make sure it is a size that is something I can easily handle in terms of both size and weight.
Cutting lumber from logs is one of the more exciting things in woodworking. Almost every log has something interesting inside. It's just like opening a gift ... you never know what is going to be inside. I might be just plain lumber or it could have some figure, some knots, some swirling grain or all sorts of different effect.
When working with logs that you can see spalting when they are cut, you still never know what is going to be inside, or it could be that the spalting has gone too far and the logs are more rot than they are usable wood. That's the beauty and the fun of cutting your own lumber.

Here's a trip to a local fella that owns a bandsaw mill and kiln. I took two medium size poplar logs up and we cut them into lumber to be used as siding boards on a house that I'm renovating.
