"Swales are Swell and So Are Rain Gardens" is Episode 7 the last in the series of instructional videos the Water Board has been posting on how we can be stewards of our watersheds - which starts at home. Make sure to keep in the loop for upcoming events showcasing these videos.
When rain hits hard surfaces, it runs off and is collected by the storm drain system and can end up polluting the water body it drains to. This video focuses on alternatives to directing water off your property through creating depressions in your landscape that slow the flow and often create habitat full of native flora and fauna.

Construction of our first mainframe swale in Fall 2015. I failed to mention it in the video, but this swale is 280 feet long. It took almost two days from start to finish, but a good portion of that on day 1 was me fiddling with the tractor & the plow. Once I decided to make due with how it was working, it probably only took about 8-10 hours to do the whole thing, start to finish (seeded & mulched).

Today We got 2-3 inches of rain in about 30 minutes and a total of 8 inches over a 48 hour period. The swale held it's own for a while but ultimately it had multiple failures. Bridges and roads get swallowed up by the massive amounts of water and old timers say they have never seen it this high.

Here is a video of a micro swale that I'm building to divert runoff water to my fruit trees. It's kind of a blend of a Geoff Lawton style permaculture swale mixed with a Brad Lancaster styled diversion berm/basin swale. It's only in the beginning stages but hopefully it'll help to hydrate my fruit trees when we get our infrequent rains. I plan on adding another PVC diverter to direct overflow from my upper fruit trees to my lower trees that are soon to be planted. I'm sure it's not a perfect plan but I think it might just work out alright with a few tweaks here and there. Thanks for watching.

Swale is a local government district with borough status in Kent, England. Its council is based in Sittingbourne. The borough is named after the narrow channel called The Swale, a channel that separates the mainland of Kent from the Isle of Sheppey, and which occupies the central part of the district.
The Roman Watling Street passed through the area, as witness the straightness of the A2 main road, now by-passed by the M2 motorway. Apart from northern coast of the Isle of Sheppey, and the immediate areas around the towns, it is a mainly rural borough, containing a high proportion of the UK's apple, pear, cherry and plum orchards, as well as remaining hop gardens.
The district was formed in 1974 under the Local Government Act 1972, from the boroughs of Faversham and Queenborough-in-Sheppey (which covered all of Sheppey), the Sittingbourne and Milton urban district and Swale Rural District.
Swale railway station is at the southern end of the Kingsferry Bridge.
There are four towns in the borough: Sittingbourne and Faversham on the mainland; Sheerness, Queenborough on the Isle. In addition local government is carried out by the following parish councils:

Construction of our first mainframe swale in Fall 2015. I failed to mention it in the video, but this swale is 280 feet long. It took almost two days from start to finish, but a good portion of that on day 1 was me fiddling with the tractor & the plow. Once I decided to make due with how it was working, it probably only took about 8-10 hours to do the whole thing, start to finish (seeded & mulched).

Here is a video of a micro swale that I'm building to divert runoff water to my fruit trees. It's kind of a blend of a Geoff Lawton style permaculture swale mixed with a Brad Lancaster styled diversion berm/basin swale. It's only in the beginning stages but hopefully it'll help to hydrate my fruit trees when we get our infrequent rains. I plan on adding another PVC diverter to direct overflow from my upper fruit trees to my lower trees that are soon to be planted. I'm sure it's not a perfect plan but I think it might just work out alright with a few tweaks here and there. Thanks for watching.

This is the steam version. All Level 5 upgrades needed. No Hero! This works about 1 in 5 tries for me. So easy to mess it up. Not sure how I'd improve it from here to make the strategy more reliable.. Very tricky. Need to place spear throwers very carefully and use rain of fire at exactly the right times. Enjoy!
Some explanations:
The rain of fire at 3:30 isn't necessary. Just felt like making my life easy for a minute since I knew it would recharge by the time I really needed it.
The rain of fire at 4:33 may look a bit silly as it is only used to weaken 3 werewolves. But it is critical to do this so that they are killed very quickly when they reach the rock elemental and 4 reinforcements. If not done the position gets overrun with more than 5 enemies and they run through the defenses. If you wait to use the rain of fire when the 3 werewolves and multiple lycans are together then the fire wont recharge in time for when you need it again. It barely recharged in time to save me at 5:34

Driver cut too soon coming out of the Sentry store in Nasalle WA . His trailer tires went over the curb and down into a small swale . A lion charged and killed a safari guide who was leading a group of tourists in the same national park in Zimbabwe that was the home of Cecil the lion who was killed by a bow hunter in July.Police spokeswoman Charity Charamba said Tuesday that Quinn Swales was in Hwange National Park when he spotted six lions on Monday."One of the lions had cubs and they became hostile. Mr. Swales at first manage to scare the lions away but then the male lion later made a U-turn and attacked him," Charamba told The Associated Press. None of the tourists was harmed, she said.Swales was leading six tourists on a walking safari when he spotted fresh lion spoor and decided to track a pride of lions consisting of two females, two cubs and two males, according to the Zimbabwe National Parks and Wildlife Management Authority.The collared lion, named Nxaha, attacked Swales, the parks authority said.Cecil's killing in July by American dentist James Walter Palmer just outside the park sparked outrage in the United States. All this I use as tools to describe, explain and deepen the interest in the sites that we visit. From my experience, I have learned that in this way, the Holy Land becomes more than just history, and that the large stones that we see scattered about in dissaray, join together one by one until they become - a Byzantine Church. This also happens when I lead a group of Pilgrims in the Steps of Jesus. We climb to the peak of Mount Precipice, "glide" over the land to the Sea of Galilee, land on the water and "see" the miracle which enfolds before us. This is a many faceted experience. Not only history which you will remember and cherish, but an experience which I hope will be inplanted in your hearts and minds, and will accompany you all the days of your life.

In 1845, 53 year old Samuel K. Barlow of Illinois arrived at The Dalles. He became very disgruntled at the high tolls being charged to transport emigrants down the Columbia. He was also very concerned about the extreme hazards of the trip. Barlow scouted out a wagon road around the south side of Mt. Hood, which he began operating as a toll road in 1846. It was a very rough road, with trees and rocks making the journey even more difficult.
The Barlow Road was the last overland segment of the Oregon Trail before reaching the Willamette Valley. This road provided an alternative to the dangerous and expensive route that used rafts to transport wagons down the Columbia River. But it was not free. The Barlow Road was the first place on the 2,100 mile Oregon Trail where tolls were charged. When the road opened in 1846, tolls were $5.00 per wagon and 10 cents for every head of livestock. Five dollars was about one week's wages, but consider the alternative -- floating down the Columbia River in boats or rafts cost nearly $50.00! By 1863, tolls had changed to $2.50 per wagon and team, 75 cents for horse and rider, and 10 cents for other livestock.
The Barlow Road operated under many owners as a toll road from 1846 to 1919. There were no tolls after 1919 when the estate of the final owner deeded the road to the State of Oregon.
The Mount Hood National Forest maintains 40 miles of Barlow Road corridor. Much of the road on the Forest is still in use today for recreation activities. About 30 miles remain "intact," but not always in a form you would expect. The Barlow Road underwent an evolution of travel modes--from oxen-pulled wagon to Model A Fords. In the Zigzag Valley, much of the original route is beneath U.S. Highway 26. Motorized travel meant mechanized re-routing and maintenance. The new motorized routes (including Mount Hood Loop Highway of 1924) left many isolated pieces of "pristine wagon ruts." Rut traces are still visible today.
The ruts are actually a swale--a five to six foot wide trench worn out by the wagon and the stock that pulled them. Near "Pioneer Woman's Grave," they get four to five feet deep. Fine traces exist within 200 feet of paved parking at Pioneer Woman's Grave and Barlow Pass. The one mile hiking trail from Barlow Pass to Pioneer Woman's Grave has some of the best rut traces to be seen; they are marked with rustic "Original Wagon Route" signs. There are also fine traces near Devil's Half Acre. Without formal maps, ruts on Laurel Hill are for the true "rut nuts" to search out. Wagons were lowered at Laurel Hill; a stump with rope burn was near the top of chute number two, but the marks have disintegrated through time.

To help prevent stormwater pollution and urban runoff, this partnership project replaced some of the school's hard surfaces with an Ocean Friendly Garden, complete with a linear "bioswale." A lesson in how Mother Nature cleans and returns water to the ground, the school's bioswale, with its sloped sides and a depressed area filled by rocks, native vegetation, mulch and organic compost, will retain stormwater and trap pollutants and silt that would otherwise would travel to the ocean.
Sustainable Ventura.TV was on hand on Wednesday, October 2,when the City of Ventura Fire Department joined Will Rogers Elementary School and other local community members to commemorate the newly landscaped areas, and to demonstrate how the new bioswale operates by releasing 500 gallons of water into the swale.

Hello explorers! Hoping you enjoy the results of a two week journey in, out, and around astonishingly lush jungles and smile-inducingly friendly small towns of Costa Rica with Wild Planet Adventures. After landing from a red-eye out of LAX our journey immediately began by picking up companion travelers and making way to our accommodations. Inching closer and closer to the coast along the way our van stalled while navigating a highly flooded coastal road! We were stuck in hot and sticky air, bugs and birds abound....but isn't that exactly what makes it an adventure?! Speedbump out of the way, the trip could now truly begin. Traveling to new locations for fresh activities almost daily we visited places like Cahuita, on the Caribbean side of the country, to experience a beachside hike through Cahuita National Park where we saw howler monkeys, dozens of birds, whiptail lizards, and hundreds of insects. Wet, thunderous nights awaited us in Sarapiquí, although it brought out at least ten marvelously different species of frogs for our exciting night hikes, along with ramping up the rapids for white water rafting the Sarapiquí River the following day - a supreme rush that will fill you with life! Later we visited Arenal where we had a mostly cloudy view of the volcano, but it was all still quite formidable - we did get to enjoy hot springs too - as well as interact with wildlife at a great operation called Proyecto Asis. In La Fortuna, Proyecto Asis takes in injured wildlife found throughout the country and those confiscated by police from households having been owned illegally, here we learned about animals ranging from spider and white faced capuchin monkeys to scarlet macaws and peccaries. Eventually our travels took us up ravenously rugged roads to chilly cloud forest heights of Monteverde. Here we visited hummingbird and butterfly gardens, explored Selvatura Park via traversing misty canopy bridges and zip lining over trees and through clouds! We spent our final nights in hydroelectric & solar powered jungle lodge on the Osa Peninsula, along the southernmost tip of Costa Rica, bordering virgin rainforest of Corcovado National Park where we tackled a testy hike along the coast with potential views for jaguars, puma, monkey, endless scarlet macaws, and more!
Our journey was absolutely amazing. There were great challenges and greater rewards that I will cherish for the rest of my life! Endless thanks to our incredible guide Mario, fantastic driver Pablo, and travel companions Sally & Merrill.

Driver cut too soon coming out of the Sentry store in Nasalle WA . His trailer tires went over the curb and down into a small swale . As his trailer dropped into the ditch it hooked a 3 foot section of concrete culvert that ran under the road for drainage . The culvert kicked up and was between his axles on the right side pointing straight up . The culver was full of mud and heavy . I backed into the ditch thinking I would be able to use my wheel lift to raise the springs up high enough to pull the debris out . Problem with this was by the time I got my truck in the ditch I didn't have enough lift to do any good . I reset my truck used one line and a small hook to go into the wheel on the rear axle . I extended the boom out and proceeded to gently lift the trailer high enough to roll the culvert out . A local helped me we hooked the culvert to his truck and pulled it out from under the unit . The concrete curb was only 2 feet long and the owner of the trailer and myself were able to pull it out between the tires . He managed to pull the trailer out of the ditch using just his Ford truck .

The Miami Beach Botanical Garden is a 2.6-acre urban greenspace in Miami Beach, Florida founded in 1962. It was transformed in 2011 with a $1.2 million landscape renovation designed by South Florida landscape architect Raymond Jungles. The new landscape showcases native Florida plants and trees including bromeliads, palms, cycad, orchids and many others. There is a Japanese garden, native garden and bio-swale, and water gardens including ponds, fountains, and a wetland with mangrove and pond apple trees. The renovation also expanded the Great Lawn area for corporate and social events, established a plant nursery and event plaza, and enhanced the night-time lights, entrance gate, and pathways.
The Garden offers free admission and is open Tuesday to Sunday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
In 1962, the City of Miami Beach created the "Garden Center" on a vacant site opposite the Miami Beach Convention Center built in 1957. Operated then as a City park, the Garden was situated on the historic Collins Canal, an integral part of the beginnings of Miami Beach. In the early 1900s pioneer John Collins dug the canal to transport mangoes and avocados, then called alligator pears by boat to the Port of Miami from groves along what is now Pinetree Drive. In the 1920s pioneer Carl Fisher developed Lincoln Road, luxury hotels such as the Flamingo and the Nautilus with polo fields and golf courses. The Garden site was originally a golf course. By 1922 Miami Beach boasted the largest avocado and mango groves in the world, but Miami's agricultural roots wouldn't last much longer, sacrificed for the tourist trade. Tourism has long been a driving force in Miami Beach, but the City also experienced the impact of economic recessions, World Wars, and destructive hurricanes. The Garden had sadly deteriorated before the Art Deco renaissance of the 1980s and after Hurricane Andrew in 1992. A group of residents approached the City in 1996 to create the Miami Beach Garden Conservancy as a non-profit organization with a mission to restore the Garden. Today's Miami Beach Botanical Garden is a public/private partnership, owned by the City of Miami Beach. The Garden has again become a dynamic venue for arts and cultural programming, environmental education and cultural tourism.

This is the third slideshow I've made at Ewaninga Rock Carvings Conservation Reserve down the Old South Road, Central Australia. I went down for the sunset light show on Friday 13th. The earlier two Ewaninga slideshows were made last year from photos taken in the early morning. I've used the same music (a tune I sort of made up, till someone tells me differently) with all three. It somehow suits the red rock scenery the way I see it.
There are three stories in this slideshow:
The first, is about the Arrernte Aboriginal rock carvings around the knoll beside the claypan. The age of the rock carvings is not known, but they are highly culturally significant. The interpretation of their abstract meanings is restricted to oral transmission to tribal members only ... for visitors: look, photograph by all means, but do not touch. There is, some might say, an incongruous viewing platform that allows visitor viewing of some of the rock carvings without climbing on the rocks.
The second story is about the brief but brilliant light play on the reserve's iron rich red rocks remnant from the tidal zones of a huge inland sea some 500 million years ago.
The third story is about the drying up of the shallow ephemeral claypan that is nestled in the swale of the crescent shaped sand dune beside the rocky knoll. Claypans are literally big puddles. They fill when there is sufficient rain and evaporate away when there isn't. There is still enough water in some of the claypan (just a slither) to be highly reflective of the sky and clouds etc, while there are plates cracking, forming, oozing colour as the claypan dries, making for colourful patterns on the surface.
