Terence Alan "Spike" Milligan KBE (16 April 1918 – 27 February 2002) was a comedian, writer and actor. The son of an Irish father and an English mother, his early life was spent in India where he was born. The majority of his working life was spent in the United Kingdom. He disliked his first name and began to call himself "Spike" after hearing a band on Radio Luxembourg called Spike Jones and his City Slickers.
Milligan was the co-creator, main writer and a principal cast member of The Goon Show, performing a range of roles including the popular Eccles and Minnie Bannister characters. Milligan wrote and edited many books, including Puckoon and his seven-volume autobiographical account of his time serving during the Second World War, beginning with Adolf Hitler: My Part in His Downfall. He is also noted as a popular writer of comical verse; much of his poetry was written for children, including Silly Verse for Kids (1959). After success with the groundbreaking British radio programme, The Goon Show, Milligan translated this success to television with Q5, a surreal sketch show which is credited as a major influence on the members of Monty Python's Flying Circus. He was the oldest, longest lived and last surviving member of the Goons.
Puckoon is a comic novel by Spike Milligan, first published in 1963. It is his first full-length novel, and only major fictional work. Set in 1924, it details the troubles brought to the fictional Irish village of Puckoon by the Partition of Ireland: the new border, due to the incompetence of the Boundary Commission, passes directly through the village, with most of the village placed in the independent Irish Free State, but with a significant portion to Northern Ireland.
The protagonist of the novel is the feckless Dan Milligan, a man so lazy that the author is obliged to take direct action to prevent him spending the entire novel lounging about at home; thus alerted to his status as a fictional character, Dan frequently breaks the fourth wall, speaking directly to the writer about the trouble he has been made to endure.
An abridged audiobook version, read by the author, was released on LP and cassette.
A film adaptation, written and directed by Terence Ryan, was released in 2002.
Ireland–United Kingdom relations, also referred to as British–Irish relations or Anglo-Irish relations, are the relations between the states of Ireland and the United Kingdom. The three devolved administrations of the United Kingdom, in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, and the three dependencies of the British Crown, the Isle of Man, Jersey and Guernsey, also participate in multilateral bodies created between the two states.
Since at least the 1600s, all of these areas have been connected politically, reaching a height in 1801 with the creation of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland. About five-sixths of the island of Ireland seceded from the United Kingdom in 1922 as the Irish Free State. Historically, relations between the two states have been influenced heavily by issues arising from their shared (and frequently troubled) history, the independence of the Irish Free State and the governance of Northern Ireland. These include the partition of Ireland and the terms of Ireland's secession, its constitutional relationship with and obligations to the UK after independence, and the outbreak of political violence in Northern Ireland. Additionally, the high level of trade between the two states, their proximate geographic location, their common status as islands in the European Union, common language and close cultural and personal links mean political developments in both states often closely follow each other.

With all the participants holding down the pencil and much pushing and shoving, the border finds it's way down the middle of Puckoon, dividing house from outhouse, man from wife, pub chairs from bars, church from cemetery. Our hero Dan Maddigan wakes up from his indolence to find cheap beer on the wrong side of the pub, and on a border patrol demanding passports. Puckoon will never be the same again. Som...

In 1972, Spike Milligan's book Adolf Hitler, My Part In His Downfall was made into a "Hitlarious" movie. However, like most book to film adaptations, this one suffered the curse of having not much of the book actually in it. When you take out all the non-booky bits from the 98 minute movie what you're left with is this 30 minute clip show. Even that running time is with a padded out 5 mile run sequence.

The Bed-Sitting Room is a satirical play by Spike Milligan and John Antrobus from 1962. This film version was released in 1969. Very dark and surreal. Too strange for most people (but I like it). Now out on DVD.

Part of the special "Wogan's Radio Fun" program broadcast on 30 December 1987. Terry Wogan interviews Spike Milligan and Harry Secombe about The Goons.
20th October 1989, and Spike Milligan and Harry Secombe are being interviewed on the live BBC1 chat show "Wogan" (hosted this week by Joanna Lumley while Terry Wogan was on holiday). There's the usual measure of lunacy from the two ex-Goons, and then something genuinely unexpected and unplanned happens... Joanna Lumley clearly isn't too sure what do to, but Spike deals with the situation as only Spike can.

A fairly rare interview with Spike by Clive Anderson. It seems that every Clive Anderson interview I have involves someone who's now dead!

This 1996 BBC Omnibus documentary about Spike Milligan includes considerable footage of and interviews with the great comedian himself, as well as earlier archival film, audio and photos, contributions from colleagues such as Harry Secombe, Norma Farnes, Eric Sykes and Dennis Main Wilson, plus interviews with his children Laura, Jane, Sile and Sean. This is arguably the best doco on Spike recorded and broadcast before his death.

This now rather well-remembered incident by the hilariously irreverent Spike Milligan, has amusingly followed former ABC newsreader Rod McNeil ever since that day in November 1971. Spike had just finished a radio interview in the same studio where Rod then arrived to read, or attempted to, the ABC News bulletin which followed... complete with interjections from Spike, live on the air! This ABC News radio piece has become a real classic for all Milligan fans, and now we can finally hear from the newsreader himself who Spike so infamously interrupted!
Spike Milligan is the Godfather of British alternative comedy. He pioneered revolutionary radio comedy with the creation of The Goon Show and went on to be a major influence on Monty Python's Flying Circus with his innovative "Q" series. The BBC have done a spectacularly poor job of honouring his legacy with very small amounts of Spike's material making it to DVD. I will be uploading what little has made it to DVD in order to share Spike's brilliance via YouTube in the highest quality possible.
Interviewed by psychiatrist Anthony Clare in 1982, Spike Milligan tells of his racist upbringing in colonial India.

Cure for sea sickness: Sit under a tree
Very funny chat show appearance by Spike Milligan, where he is reunited with some of his old War War II colleagues to celebrate his 70th birthday on Terry Wogan's chat show in 1988. Includes surprise guest at the end. Apologies for the quality of the footage, but I thought comedy fans would like to see it.
