Maracas ( pronunciation (help·info), sometimes called rumba shakers) are a native instrument of Latin America. They are a percussion instruments (idiophones), usually played in pairs, consisting of a dried calabash or gourd shell (cuia "cue-ya") or coconut shell filled with seeds or dried beans. They may also be made of leather, wood, or plastic.

Often one ball is pitched high and the other is pitched low. There is evidence of clay maracas used by the natives of Colombia 1500 years ago.[citation needed] The word maraca is thought to have come from the Tupi language of Brazil, where it is pronounced 'ma-ra-KAH'. They are known in Trinidad as shac-shacs.
Although a simple instrument, the method of playing the maracas is not obvious. The seeds must travel some distance before they hit the leather, wood, or plastic, so the player must anticipate the rhythm. One can also strike the maraca against one's hand or leg to get a different sound. Band leader Vincent Lopez hosted a radio program in the early 1950s called Shake the Maracas in which audience members competed for small prizes by playing the instrument with the orchestra.

We went back-a-wards
Directionally impaired
Those were your words
Oh I was sober
But to drive I wasn't fit
And the road came up so quickly
The road came up so quick
Uh oh, uh oh
We went side-a-ways
Past everything we ever made
Parking lot full of mistakes
My head was dizzy
But the steering wheel was square
Oh, it wouldn't take me where I wanted
Wouldn't take me anywhere
Oh and I was blind to your design
You had it planned out all the time
(Back and forth is the way way I'm going
If you want, I could give you a ride
Drive around all night
You hang out the side
Tune me out just like radio)
Uh oh, uh oh
We went no-oh-where
Can't release the brake
Stalled and it was too late
My day was vacant
And you came to fill it in
But my whole world would be shaking
If we said what we were thinking
Oh and I was blind to your design
You had it planned out all the time
(Back and forth is the way way I'm going
If you want, I could give you a ride
Drive around all night
You hang out the side
Tune me out just like radio)
I believe you'd fall
I believe you'd fall
Oh and I was blind to your design
You had it planned out all the time
(Back and forth is the way way I'm going
If you want, I could give you a ride
Drive around all night
You hang out the side
Tune me out just like radio)
I would walk those three-thousand miles to you
I'd walk them every step
But would you be there when I get there
Will you be there 'til the end?
(Drive around all night
You hang out the side
