Grant's Tomb, now formally known as General Grant National Memorial, is the final resting place of Ulysses S. Grant (1822–1885), the 18th President of the United States, and his wife, Julia Dent Grant (1826–1902). Completed in 1897, the tomb is located in Riverside Park in the Morningside Heights neighborhood of Upper Manhattan in New York City, across the street from the monumental Riverside Church. It was placed under the management of the National Park Service in 1958.
On July 23, 1885, Ulysses S. Grant died of throat cancer at age 63 in Wilton, New York. Grant's family agreed to have his remains interred in New York City.William Russell Grace, the Mayor of New York City, wrote a letter to prominent New Yorkers the following day, to gather support for a national monument in Grant's honor. The letter read as follows:
This preliminary meeting was attended by 85 New Yorkers and established the Committee on Organization. The chairman of the Committee was former U.S. president Chester A. Arthur; the secretary was Richard T. Greener. This organization would come to be known as the Grant Monument Association (GMA).
Grant's is a blended Scotch whisky bottled by William Grant & Sons in Scotland.
In 1886, William Grant started working in the distillery business as a bookkeeper. In 1898, Pattison's, the largest Scotch whisky blender at the time, suddenly went bankrupt and William Grant stepped in and launched Grant's whisky.
William built the Glenfiddich Distillery in Dufftown, Scotland with the help of his seven sons and two daughters and on Christmas Day, 1887, it produced its first drops of spirit.
Later, William’s son-in-law Charles Gordon became the company’s first salesman and in 1909 spent a year taking Grant’s to Australia and the Far East.
In 1915, a new law stated that the minimum maturation period for Scotch whisky was to be two years (today it is three). While this led to the ruin of many a Scotch whisky distillery, William Grant had kept a supply of aging whisky in stock and was able to ensure continued production.
William Grant died in 1923 but by this time, the family business was well established.

From 72nd Street north it's a scenic landmark, with views that range from distinguished buildings and statues to playgrounds and river boats. The most prominent of these are Grant's Tomb and the Soldiers' and Sailors' Monument. There is so much to see and explore at Riverside Park. Watch our video, then make your own plans to visit. Click on http://amzn.to/1OpOjvO. I shot this video of the famous Riverside Church in New York City during a walk in the Morningside Heights section of Manhattan. As a relatively new resident of New York, I often wondered about the great steeple that could be seen for miles in Upper Manhattan and even across the Hudson River in New Jersey. First, I was surprised to find out it's located across Riverside Drive from another famous New York City landmark: Grant's Tomb. Riverside Church is an enormous and imposing ediface when you stand beneath it. The steeple is the tallest...

Contestant teams usually consisted of one male and one female, most selected from the studio audience. Occasionally, famous or otherwise interesting figures were invited to play (e.g., a Korean-American contestant who was a veteran and had been a prisoner of war during the Korean War). After his signature introduction of "Here he is: the one, the only..." by Fenneman and finished by a thunderous "GROUCHO!" from the audience, Marx would be introduced to the music of "Hooray for Captain Spaulding", his signature song. After which, Groucho would be introduced to the contestants and engage in humorous conversation for a lengthy period of time where Groucho both improvised his responses and employed prepared lines written by the show's writers using preshow interviews. Some show tension revol...
