Portsmouth is the second largest town in Dominica, with 2,977 inhabitants. It lies on the Indian River on Dominica's northwest coast, in Saint John Parish. Cabrits National Park is located on a peninsula to the north of town. Portsmouth has its own sea port in Prince Rupert Bay.
Portsmouth was initially chosen as the capital of Dominica, but only served in that capacity in 1760. After malaria broke out there the same year, the capital was moved to Roseau, where it remains.
The Ross University School of Medicine, which has over 1,000 students mainly from the United States and Canada, is located near Portsmouth, in Picard. The school's presence is a major economic resource for the local people.
A farmer's market runs Tuesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays in the city.
The area is the birthplace of local politician Roosevelt Douglas.
The area has many plans for tourism and employment in general. The Japanese Government is currently funding and constructing a fish processing plant in Portsmouth.

St. Vincent belongs to the Windward-Islands and it is located in the north of Trinidad and Tobago. The volcanic island lies north of the small island Bequia, which is strongly influenced by whaling.
Because of its diverse flora and fauna, the Caribbean Island Dominica is also known as the nature island. Diseases are cured traditionally by herbs growing here.
St Vincent and the Grenadines are in the Eastern Caribbean Sea. The natives are the descendants of the caribs, which immigrated from Venezuela. St. Vincent is a volcanic Island and forms with forty other islands the island state St. Vincent and the Grenadines.
1498 Christopher Columbus arrived in St. Vincent where the Caribs lived. It remained very long uncolonised It was occupied by the British in the 18th century.
Whale hunting was an important part of the local economy. Today there is an agreement with greenpeace to hunt four Humpback whales a year for the own consumption.
Life in Crusoe, the capital of Domenica, is much more hectic. It has the unofficial name “The Nature Island”. Domenica is very mountainous and has a lot of rivers and waterfalls. Chistopher Columbus did not set a food on the island, but gave her its name from “Domingo”, Sunday, Domenica was the last island colonised by the Europeans because of the resistance of the caribs. Herbs are used for healing, the very traditional medical knowledge is transmitted from generation to generation. Canoes are constructed from a single treetrunk,
St Vincent and Domenica have the only Carib reservations in the whole Caribbean. It is here that the descendants of the people who gave the name to the region continued to live. They are the last reminents who long resisted the colonial ambition of the European and never allowed to be enslaved

Caribbean Moments shows a different side to the Caribbean. Everyone visualises sand, sunshine and palm trees – but hardly anyone really discovers what lies behind them. In fact an unbelievable variety of cultures, music and religions has developed as a result of the different influences – African, Indian, English, French and authentically Caribbean.
This documentary series attempts to portray the people - be they the Rastas, who have a lot to say about their mission, the Amerindians in Trinidad, who still have their own Queen, or the Black Caribs – a mixture of escaped slaves and Caribs.
In addition, of course, there’s a huge variety of music: steelpan, parang, calypso, soca and chutney soca shape Trinidad, whilst other islands are especially scenically beautiful, such as Dominica, which is actually a single rain forest and which seduces with its abundant vegetation. Here too are the true Caribs, who occupy themselves with traditional boat building in the same way as their ancestors did centuries ago.
The films were produced in 6 parts to create a documentary series that shows what lies beneath the surface.

A select group of aspiring filmmakers, photographers, and story tellers, were offered free round-trip airfare, accommodations, meals, trail guides, and access to one of the most beautiful and inspiring landscapes in the world. All they had to do was explore and document their adventures. This is the result.
Dominica – "The New"
Before landing on the island, Trent and Josh thought they already knew what they wanted to capture. And then the plane landed and all of that flew out the window. Immediately they began to discover things they couldn’t predict and as the week wore on their own adventures began to make their way into the film.
From arm-wresting a dock worker to hiking the boiling lake, it became clear the only way to experience the beauty of Dominica was to discover it on your own. So check out their adventures and know that this film is merely a glimpse of what the island has to offer. (Trent & Josh)

Nature Island. Dominica, located in the French West indies is a really magical place.
It’s kind of crazy how life works. A few weeks ago I was boarding a plane for Dominica for a film project. I posted a photo on facebook and received a message from a friend, Ashley, just after I arrived on the island mentioning she knew someone who was living there. Ashley said I must meet her friends Melissa and Andy – with a big emphasis on must.
As the film challenge I was there for commenced, I found myself changing my plane ticket to stay in Dominica four more days, and hopping in Melissa’s car going to who knows where for the last two. Where I ended up couldn’t have been more perfectly planned. I did not, however plan to make a film, and especially the way I did.
Can you recall an experience that changed you? A moment that will forever be engrained in you and you recall it when you smell a certain something or flip through an old photo album. These moments don’t occur often. But they did for me twice in Dominica. I hope you’ll watch this short film I was inspired to make yesterday and be taken back to remember some of your own serendipitous moments in life. And always remember to be open to letting life lead you once in a while.
Melissa and Andy are now like my long lost friends who I just hadn’t yet met. Melissa is a qualified architect and chef and Andy is a yacht captain. They both work on Yachts and after sailing and traveling the world decided to call Dominica home. They just finished building their house, the one you see in the film, and rent the little cottage down the way to guests traveling through. They are fully off the grid, powered by solar and fresh spring water and harvest their meals (they are INCREDIBLE chefs) from their food forrest they’ve grown on the property. If you find yourself in Dominica, make sure you look them up. I’m sure they’d love to meet you. You can find them under Banana Lama Eco Villa on Facebook.
