Alex Lewis who lost four limbs and part of his face to flesh-eating bug gets new lips..A father who lost his limbs and part of his face to a flesh-eating bug has undergone an operation to give him back his lips and open up his mouth again.
Alex Lewis, from Wiltshire, was just 34 when he fell ill last November with what he thought was a common cold.
However, the illness was a Strep A infection, resulting in the loss of all his limbs and part of his face.
Nearly a year later, Alex has gone under the knife again to reconstruct some of what he lost.
Surgeons at Salisbury District Hospital spent more than 20 hours last week sculpting him new lips using flesh from his shoulder. he will undergo another operating in six months time to shape the lips and have texture added with tattoos.
Still pumped full of drugs, Alex’s first reaction when he saw his new face in the mirror was panic.
‘I have never felt so scared. I was absolutely petrified,’ he told The Daily Echo newspaper.
‘I could see the puffiness of my lips and the big flap of skin on the left hand side of my mouth and thought ‘My God’.
But after his initial worries, Alex was still able to have a sense of humour.
‘It is quite comical to look at. I do find it funny in a macabre kind of way, a weird funny’, he said.
Alex underwent an initial six-hour operation last Monday to open up his mouth and a day later spent a further 14.5 hours having his lips built.
Veins were fused to an artery to give the flesh its own blood supply and an extra bit of skin was stitched on to the left side of his mouth.
This will be removed later if there are no problems during the healing process.
‘I think a lot of people I know will thankfully appreciate the level of surgery and the skill that was undertaken in it all, and they won’t just see two huge puffy lips,’ he said.
Alex, who is married to wife Lucy, has said he wants photos of his new lips to be published so he can be a role model to his three-year-old son Sam and make him ‘proud’.

Lewis (Scottish Gaelic: Leòdhas, pronounced [ʎɔː.əs̪], also Isle of Lewis) is the northern part of Lewis and Harris, the largest island of the Western Isles or Outer Hebrides (an archipelago) of Scotland. The total area of Lewis is 683 square miles (1,770 km2).
Lewis is, in general, the lower lying part of Lewis and Harris, with the other part, Harris, being more mountainous. The flatter, more fertile land means Lewis contains the largest settlement, Stornoway, and three-quarters of the population of the Western Isles. Beyond human habitation, the island's diverse habitats are home to an assortment of flora and fauna, such as the golden eagle, red deer and seals and are recognised in a number of conservation areas.
Lewis is of Presbyterian tradition with a rich history, having once been part of the Norse Kingdom of Mann and the Isles. Today, life is very different from elsewhere in Scotland with Sabbath observance, the Gaelic language and peat cutting retaining more importance than elsewhere. Lewis has a rich cultural heritage as can be seen from its myths and legends as well as the local literary and musical traditions.

Surgeons at Salisbury District Hospital spent more than 20 hours last week sculpting him new lips using flesh from his shoulder. he will undergo another operating in six months time to shape the lips and have texture added with tattoos. Still pumped full of drugs, Alex’s first reaction when he saw his new face in the mirror was panic. ‘I have never felt so scared. I was absolutely petrified,’ he told The Daily Echo newspaper. ‘I could see the puffiness of my lips and the big flap of skin on the left hand side of my mouth and thought ‘My God’. But after his initial worries, Alex was still able to have a sense of humour. ‘It is quite comical to look at. I do find it funny in a macabre kind of way, a weird funny’, he said. Alex underwent an initial six-hour operation last Monday to open up his mouth and a day later spent a further 14.5 hours having his lips built. Veins were fused to an artery to give the flesh its own blood supply and an extra bit of skin was stitched on to the left side of his mouth. This will be removed later if there are no problems during the healing process. ‘I think a lot of people I know will thankfully appreciate the level of surgery and the skill that was undertaken in it all, and they won’t just see two huge puffy lips,’ he said. Alex, who is married to wife Lucy, has said he wants photos of his new lips to be published so he can be a role model to his three-year-old son Sam and make him ‘proud’. -

Alex Lewis who lost four limbs and part of his face to flesh-eating bug gets new lips..A father who lost his limbs and part of his face to a flesh-eating bug has undergone an operation to give him back his lips and open up his mouth again. Alex Lewis, from Wiltshire, was just 34 when he fell ill last November with what he thought was a common cold. However, the illness was a Strep A infection, resulting in the loss of all his limbs and part of his face. Nearly a year later, Alex has gone under the knife again to reconstruct some of what he lost. Surgeons at Salisbury District Hospital spent more than 20 hours last week sculpting him new lips using flesh from his shoulder. he will undergo another operating in six months time to shape the lips and have texture added with tattoos. Alex Lewis who lost four limbs and part of his face to flesh-eating bug gets new lips..A father who lost his limbs and part of his face to a flesh-eating bug has undergone an operation to give him back his lips and open up his mouth again.
Alex Lewis, from Wiltshire, was just 34 when he fell ill last November with what he thought was a common cold.
However, the illness was a Strep A infection, resulting in the loss of all his limbs and part of his face.
Nearly a year later, Alex has gone under the knife again to reconstruct some of what he lost.
Surgeons at Salisbury District Hospital spent more than 20 hours last week sculpting him new lips using flesh from his shoulder. he will undergo another operating in six months time to shape the lips and have texture added with tattoos.
Still pumped full of drugs, Alex’s first reaction when he saw his new face in the mirror was panic.
‘I have never felt so scared. I was absolutely petrified,’ he told The Daily Echo newspaper.
‘I could see the puffiness of my lips and the big flap of skin on the left hand side of my mouth and thought ‘My God’.
But after his initial worries, Alex was still able to have a sense of humour.
‘It is quite comical to look at. I do find it funny in a macabre kind of way, a weird funny’, he said.
Alex underwent an initial six-hour operation last Monday to open up his mouth and a day later spent a further 14.5 hours having his lips built.
Veins were fused to an artery to give the flesh its own blood supply and an extra bit of skin was stitched on to the left side of his mouth.
This will be removed later if there are no problems during the healing process.
‘I think a lot of people I know will thankfully appreciate the level of surgery and the skill that was undertaken in it all, and they won’t just see two huge puffy lips,’ he said.
Alex, who is married to wife Lucy, has said he wants photos of his new lips to be published so he can be a role model to his three-year-old son Sam and make him ‘proud’.

Reminiscent nostalgia springs to mind when we listen to ‘Distant Memories’, a seamless expression of old-school jazz roots & new age production.
Almost a dozen layers of trumpet are layered upon each other, accompanied by a minimal drum beat & flowing chord changes to create a short yet succinct piece that requires repeat listening on the regular.
The track is a collaborative piece between BrassTracks, a Brooklyn based trumpeter /producer / drummer duo & Alexander Lewis, Multi instrumentalist / producer recently graduated from Manhattan School of Music Jazz Program.

When you're planning your visit to Scotland you can't forget to include at least one of the islands on your itinerary. We pondered of them all and the different ways in which to get there and eventually decided on The Isle of Skye and the Isle of Lewis and Harris. I admit I was quite nervous about driving on the opposite side from what I am used to and after being in Edinburgh for a month, I was extra nervous about city driving. We decided to take the bus to Inverness, a smaller city, and rent a car from there. I am glad we did because we just wouldn't have been able to explore the islands the way we did, with lot's of time, freedom and flexibility if we hadn't. I adjusted quite quickly after a couple of laps around the hotel parking lot and away we went. Reaching for the seatbelt on the wrong side or constantly wanting to rest the wrong arm while driving were the only adjustments I really had to make, there are constant reminders and the signs are clear so there was no trouble whatsoever. Furthermore, once you are on the islands, the roads for the most part, are single track and other cars are few and far between.
