Let's talk about some of the reasoning behind the idea of including some cooked food on an otherwise raw food diet and the effects it has on the body.
We are promoters of a raw, vegan, fruit based diet. Why? Because we promote the principles of optimal health!
Likewise, we promote clean, fresh air, clean water, adequate sleep, sunshine, rest and activity. Those are the ideals.
It's not always that we have optimal conditions however, and in those situations we must do with the next best thing, and make small compromises.
When it comes to diet,
I've found over the years that even though I can maintain a strictly raw food diet almost anywhere in the world if I want to, the reality is that when the fruit quality is less than ideal and I'm forced to eat nothing but bananas and dried fruit (which is more often than you'd think), I personally find that I do not enjoy it. I love to eat fresh, quality, tropical fruits in their ripe and ready state, but I don't enjoy the bananas only diet - especially the Cavendish only diet which can sometimes be the reality when staying in colder climates as a raw vegan. In this case I'd much rather eat some simple cooked foods like steamed sweet potatoes and pumpkins in addition to lots of bananas obviously.
I'm OK with the small compromise because the payoff - I enjoy my diet - is worth it to me.
Nutritionally speaking, cooked starchy foods like roots and tubers, are inferior to raw fruits, but not by as much as some people would like to believe. Just like year round tropical sunshine is ideal, we can still be fine with a little bit less than optimal conditions in the subtropics. Just like clean, oxygen rich air is the best to breathe, we'll still by quite healthy with slightly less ideal air quality.
The
point is this:
Ideal is ideal. Then there's a range of less than ideal as we move away from that. The practical truth is that life is never ideal on all accounts, for most people anyway, and small compromises here and there does not make a huge deal in the grand scheme of things. You'll only do what you'll enjoy - that's the truth. Foodwise this means that if you can get high quality, enjoyable fruits then go for it, but if you don't have access to that, be sure to modify your diet to a point that you can still enjoy your meals, otherwise what's the point?
Fruit takes the gold -
Everytime!
Roots, tubers and cooked fruits come in second and takes the silver! At the bottom of the podium, for the bronze, we have the grains and the legumes, best avoided if possible, but still top 3!
Do your best!
