Lord, you have been our dwelling place
in all generations. (Ps. 90:1)
In the year 1778, when
Benjamin Chappell gathered the first Methodists on this
Island…
..
Lord, you have been our dwelling place
in all generations
.
In the early years, when the people were often discouraged,
when preachers were few, and the
Spirit fires burned low….
Lord, you have been our dwelling place
in all generations.
In the year
1864, when the
Fathers of Confederation came to town and a new brick church was rising on
Prince St….
Lord, you have been our dwelling place
in all generations.
In the year 1894, when
General William Booth* stood in this pulpit and thundered forth his fiery gospel….
Lord, you have been our dwelling place
in all generations.
In the
World War 1 years, when young men and women died in faraway places, and the congregation mourned….
Lord, you have been our dwelling place
in all generations.
In the year 1925, when the
United Church of Canada was born…
Lord, you have been our dwelling place
in all generations.
In the
Great Depression years, when pockets and stomachs were often empty…
Lord, you have been our dwelling place
in all generations.
In the
World War II years, when young men and women died in faraway places, and the congregation mourned…
Lord, you have been our dwelling place
in all generations.
In the
1950s years, when the pews were filled and late comers were too late….
Lord, you have been our dwelling place
in all generations.
In the sixties and seventies, when the winds of change
blew strong and hard…..
Lord, you have been our dwelling place
in all generations.
In the
1980s, the years of controversy and division…
Lord, you have been our dwelling place
in all generations.
In these present years, with all their challenges and possibilities…
Lord, you have been our dwelling place
in all generations.
In all the years to come, whatever comes….
Lord, you have been our dwelling place
in all generations.
*General William Booth was the founder of the
Salvation Army and a former
Methodist lay preacher. He spoke at
Trinity, the largest hall on the Island, in October of 1894.

Hymn #42 (
M V) “
Praise God for This
Holy Ground”
Opening Prayer:
God, thus far you have helped us.
You have not failed us or forsaken us.
Today, we give thanks for your faithfulness
and for the faithfulness of the people
who have gone before us in this place.
We are here because they loved
Jesus
and taught their children
to praise your name
and live for you.
Be with us now in our worship
and in our celebration, which we offer to you,
God of our salvation, our strength and our hope.
Amen.
