Abbott Vaughn Meader (March 20, 1936 – October 29, 2004), known professionally as Vaughn Meader, was an American comedian, impersonator, musician, and film actor.
Meader began his career as a musician but later found fame in the early 1960s after the release of the 1962 comedy record The First Family. The album spoofed President John F. Kennedy – who was played by Meader – and went on to win the Grammy Award for Album of the Year in 1963. At the peak of his popularity, he performed his Kennedy impersonation on variety shows and in nightclubs around the country and was profiled in several magazines.
Meader's career came to an abrupt end after President Kennedy was assassinated in November 1963. He attempted to take his career in another direction by performing non-Kennedy related comedy, but had little success as he was typecast. He eventually returned to his native Maine where he resumed playing music and managed a pub.
Meader was born in Waterville, Maine during one of the worst floods ever to hit New England: he often said he was born on "the night the West Bridge washed out". He was the only child of Charles Vaughn Meader, a millworker, and Mary Ellen Abbott. After his father broke his neck and drowned in a diving accident when Meader was only eighteen months old, his mother moved to Boston to work as a cocktail waitress, leaving Meader behind with relatives. A sometimes unruly and troubled child, Meader was sent to live with his mother in Boston at the age of five but she had become an alcoholic, and placed him in a children's home.
First Family is an unofficial title for the family of a republic's head of state. A First Family usually consists of: the head of state, the first lady or first gentleman, and any children of the couple.
The term Second Family is often used to refer to the deputy head of state, usually a vice-president, or, in some countries, the family of the prime minister, in deference to a first family or royal family. The spouse is called the Second Lady or Second Gentleman.

Vaughn Meader does the JFK press conference routine that made him a star. When JFK was assassinated in Dealey Plaza, Dallas Texas on November 22nd 1963 the career of Vaughn Meader ended as quickly as that of the President he imitated.
When dawn broke on November 22, 1963, the most popular comic in America arguably was a man name Vaughn Meader. A Kennedy satirist, Meader hitched his star to President Kennedy's fame. But after that fateful day in Dallas, his career would never be the same. Charles Osgood reports.
Vaughn Meader left Cadence records in 1963 to record for MGM. "Have Some Nuts!!!" was to be his first comedy album that didn't include his Kennedy impersonation, for which he was so famous. This strategy could have worked. Unfortunately, he was a little too late. This album was recorded in November 1963, shortly before Kennedy was assassinated, and hit the shelves in early 1964. By that time, nobody wanted to be reminded of the "First Family" albums... or Meader. Just a warning to those of you who are sensitive to non-PC material: There's a -lot- of that on this album!

Volume two of the classic Kennedy-era comedy albums. Fortunately, this came out months before Kennedy was assassinated, and sold well... until November of '63 when it was basically pulled from shelves. Vaughn Meader's career was also cut short as a result.

In today's episode, we discuss the incredibly hilarious but unfortunately timed comedy album "The First Family", a lighthearted parody of the Kennedy family by Vaughn Meader.

Actress Naomi Brossart, who played Jackie Kennedy on Vaughn Meader's wildly successful 1962 album "The First Family", appears as a contestant on a 1963 episode of "To Tell the Truth" hosted by Bud Collyer with panelists Tom Poston, Peggy Cass, Theo Bikel, and Kitty Carlisle. Vaughn Meader introduces the segment and identifies the real Naomi Brossart at the end. Vaughn Meader's humor album poking good-natured fun at the Kennedy clan was a huge hit at the time, but (of course) abruptly fell out of favor later in 1963.
