It starred Loretta Young, David Niven and Broderick Crawford with a large supporting cast including Hugh Herbert, Billie Burke, C. Aubrey Smith, Virginia Field, Raymond Walburn, Zasu Pitts and Eve Arden. Composer Werner Janssen was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Music.

Colorful, campy classic drama from producer Walter Wanger that catapulted Yvonne DeCarlo into stardom. Accused of being a spy during the Austrian-Prussian war, stunningly beautiful dancer Ann Marie (De Carlo), flees her country.
Per IMDB: "She ends up in a lawless western town in Arizona, where she uses her charms and dancing skills to transform herself into 'Salome' during her dance routines. She makes such an impact on the town, eventually taming it, that they re-name the town "Salome, Where She Danced." Later on, she moves to San Francisco, where she meets a wealthy Russian man, seduces him, and has him build her own opera house to perform in. Anna Marie spends her life manipulating one man after another to get what she wants. "
The Film Daily commented that the Technicolor production was "an odd film" and added it was "a hybrid that offers a little bit of everything." Later in the review, praise was showered on Ms. De Carlo, stating that she was "a newcomer who is definitely something for the boys" and "had the stuff to make a strong box office attraction."
"A colorful, disjointed oddity," is what The Independent Film Exhibitors' Bulletin called the film. It did echo the Film Daily's appraisal of Ms. De Carlo, noting she was "a sultry dark-eyed beauty who dances well and, even if her acting is a little stilted, should be a decided attraction for male patrons."
Per Wikipedia: "The film was based on a short story inspired by the Arizona legend about the town Drinkmens Wells which came to be known as Salome, Where She Danced. The story was about a Mexican dance hall performer called Salome who danced to hold the attention of a group of outlaws and give the law-abiding members of the town enough time to assemble and arm in protection of their homes. The script expanded the story to incorporate characters such as Robert E. Lee and Bismarck."

Walter Wanger
Walter Wanger (July 11, 1894 – November 18, 1968) was an American film producer active in filmmaking from the 1910s to the turbulent production of Cleopatra in 1963. Wanger developed a reputation as an intellectual and a socially conscious movie executive who produced provocative message movies and glittering romantic melodramas. Wanger was strongly influenced by European films, and made many productions geared towards international markets.
His career began at Paramount Pictures in the 1920s and led him to work at virtually every major studio as either a contract producer or an independent. Wanger served as president of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences from 1939 to October 1941 and from December 1941 to 1945.
Early life
Wanger was born Walter Feuchtwanger in San Francisco, and pronounced "Wanger" to rhyme with "danger". He was the son of Stella (Stettheimer) and Sigmund Feuchtwanger, who were from German Jewish families that had emigrated to the United States in the nineteenth century. Wanger was from a non-observant Jewish family, and in later life attended Episcopalian services with his wife. In order to assimilate into American society, his mother altered the family name simply to Wanger in 1908. The Wangers were well-connected and upper middle class, something which later differentiated Wanger from the other Jewish film moguls who came from more ordinary backgrounds.

This edition, hosted by Joanne Woodward, examines the Group Theatre with the help of archival photographs, readings, performance clips, and interviews with individuals associated with the group. Woodward begins with a brief history of the Group Theatre, an ensemble founded by Lee Strasberg, Harold Clurman, and Cheryl Crawford in 1931, and reads from Clurman's book about that period explaining his theories of acting based on real life. Strasberg, Clurman, Crawford, and original members Eunice Stoddard and Ruth Nelson describe its founding and the influence of the Moscow Art Theatre. Robert Lewis, Stella Adler, and Margaret Barker recall being invited to join the group, and Katharine Hepburn remembers dismissing the Group as contrary to her plan of becoming a star. Morris Carnovsky and Phoebe Brand then explain the Group's method of working together and developing technique. The program's second segment focuses on the Group's summer camp program in Brookfield Center, CT. The original members share memories about the communal living arrangements, and Maria Tucci, James Naughton, and Paul Newman read aloud from writings chronicling those days. However, much of the film is fictionalized—in particular, the presentation of the manner in which the police found and arrested Graham. Evidence clearly pointed to her guilt.

Yvonne De Carlo was a Canadian-American actress, singer, and dancer. She was born on September 1, 1922 and her career in film, television, and musical theater spanned six decades. She obtained her breakthrough role in Salome, Where She Danced (1945), produced by Walter Wanger, who described her as "the most beautiful girl in the world." Success followed in films such as Criss Cross (1949) and The Captain's Paradise (1953). Her film career reached its peak when director Cecil B. DeMille cast her as Sephora, the wife of Moses, her most prominent role, in his biblical epic The Ten Commandments (1956). After her lead performance in Band of Angels (1957) and supporting role in McLintock! (1963), she played Lily Munster, the wife of Herman Munster, in the CBS sitcom The Munsters (1964–1966). De Carlo was spotted dancing at a Hollywood nightclub by a Paramount talent scout, who signed her to the studio as a back up Dorothy Lamour. Cecil B. DeMille saw de Carlo in So Proudly We Hail!, and arranged for her to be screen-tested and interviewed for the role of Tremartini in Cecil B. DeMille's The Story of Dr. Wassell (1943); it was announced she would play a key role. She wasn't cast in the end, but DeMille promised to "make it up" to her on another film "in the future." De Carlo received her big break in September 1944 when she was chosen over a reported 20,000 girls to play the lead role in Salome, Where She Danced (1945), a Walter Wanger production in Technicolor. Though not a critical success, it was a box office favorite, and the heavily-promoted De Carlo was hailed as an up-and-coming star. Salome was released by Universal who signed de Carlo to a long-term contract. She was used by the studio as a backup star to Maria Montez, and indeed stepped into a role rejected by Montez when she starred in Frontier Gal.[27] In 1946, exhibitors voted her the ninth-most promising "star of tomorrow." Trained in opera and a former chorister at St Paul's Anglican Church, Vancouver, when she was a child, De Carlo possessed a powerful contralto voice. In order to expand her appeal she began frequently singing on television and trained in opera. In 1951 she was cast in the role of Prince Orlovsky in a production of the opera Die Fledermaus at the Hollywood Bowl. In September 1954,[41] director Cecil B. DeMille cast her as Sephora, the wife of Moses (played by Charlton Heston), in his biblical epic The Ten Commandments (1956). She prepared extensively for the role, taking weaving lessons at the University of California, Los Angeles, and shepherding lessons in the San Fernando Valley.[42] Months before filming began, she had worked on the part with a drama coach.[43] Her performance was well received by film critics, described as "notably good" by Bosley Crowther. De Carlo was in debt by 1964 when she signed a contract with Universal Studios to perform the female lead role in The Munsters opposite Fred Gwynne. Though not a critical success, it was a box office favorite, and the heavily-promoted De Carlo was hailed as an up-and-coming star. Salome was released by Universal who signed de Carlo to a long-term contract. She was used by the studio as a backup star to Maria Montez, and indeed stepped into a role rejected by Montez when she starred in Frontier Gal.[27] In 1946, exhibitors voted her the ninth-most promising "star of tomorrow." Trained in opera and a former chorister at St Paul's Anglican Church, Vancouver, when she was a child, De Carlo possessed a powerful contralto voice. In order to expand her appeal she began frequently singing on television and trained in opera. In 1951 she was cast in the role of Prince Orlovsky in a production of the opera Die Fledermaus at the Hollywood Bowl. In September 1954,[41] director Cecil B. Film storico di taglio thrillerista, nel quale Anthony Mann, merito alla sapiente scrittura di due specialisti, Æneas MacKenzie e Philip Yordan, riesce ad alimentare l'interesse grazie a una certa corrispondenza di generi. Colloca la storia in un'atmosfera nera e in questa allaccia venature avventurose, classiche dei suoi western futuri e ricongiungimenti al cinema tipicamente bellico, con chiari riferimenti al secondo conflitto mondiale e alla figura di Adoph Hitler. La struttura narrativa è impiantata sul lato oscuro dei personaggi e sull'ambiente clautrofobico che li circonda. La suspance è dettata dal movimento della cinepresa in un susseguo di piani lunghi, allungati e angolati, supportati alla grande dalle inquadrature di John Alton, che riescono a creare quel clima d'incertezza necessario a manifestare la paura dilagante. La scelta del cast è discutibile, per la presenza di nomi americani in una storia francese ma le interpretazioni, almeno quelle di Richard Basehart nel ruolo di Robespierre e del suo antagonista Robert Cummings nella parte di Charles D'Aubigny, appaiono comunque buone. Perfetta messa scenografica. Arrivato in Europa con il titolo inglese The Black Book.

It was the most expensive film ever made up to that point and almost bankrupted 20th Century-Fox.
It received mixed reviews from critics, although critics and audiences alike generally praised Taylor and Burton's performances. It was the highest grossing film of 1963, earning US$26 million ($57.7 million total; equivalent to $445.98 million in 2016), yet made a loss due to its production and marketing costs of $44 million (equivalent to $340.09 million in 2016), making it the only film ever to be the highest grossing film of the year yet to run at a loss.[5] Cleopatra later won four Academy Awards, and was nominated for five more, including Best Picture (which it lost to Tom Jones).
