Marion Mitchell Morrison (born Marion Robert Morrison; May 26, 1907 – June 11, 1979), known by his stage name John Wayne and by his nickname "Duke", was an American film actor, director, and producer. An Academy Award-winner for True Grit (1969), Wayne was among the top box office draws for three decades. An enduring American icon, for several generations of Americans he epitomized rugged masculinity and is famous for his demeanor, including his distinctive calm voice, walk, and height.
Born in Iowa, Wayne grew up in Southern California. He found work at local film studios when he lost his football scholarship to USC as a result of a bodysurfing accident. Initially working for the Fox Film Corporation, he mostly appeared in small bit parts. His first leading role came in Raoul Walsh's lavish widescreen epic The Big Trail (1930), which led to leading roles in numerous B movies throughout the 1930s, many of them in the Western genre.
Wayne's career took off in 1939, with John Ford's Stagecoach making him an instant mainstream star. Wayne went on to star in 142 pictures. Biographer Ronald Davis says: "John Wayne personified for millions the nation's frontier heritage. Eighty-three of his movies were Westerns, and in them he played cowboys, cavalrymen, and unconquerable loners extracted from the Republic's central creation myth."

This is a one minute clip from a WWII John Wayne movie, with some flattering words about our airport's locale and a closing shot of a marine landing on 15. (In the background you can see Sunkist's Goleta packing house on the north side of Hollister. It's long gone - - all you'll find there now is just a giant slab of concrete.)

Both actors are great. Clint Eastwood tells how his film characters differ from the ones John Wayne played and he even imitates Wayne : ) The interviewer is James Lipton. The films they're talking about in the beginning are of course those from the "Dollars Trilogy". The director Clint is talking about is Don Siegel, who directed the first Dirty Harry film, and 4 other Clint Eastwood films. "The Shootist" (1976) actually was John Wayne's last film. This fragment is from the series "Inside the Actors Studio" in 2003. "I don't care what that kid would have done! I don't shoot him in the back!"
Audio excerpted and condensed from TonyMacklin.net, 1975. Interview conducted by Tony Macklin. Audio interview originally published on February 15, 2009 on tonymacklin.net. The interview was in Wayne's home in Newport Beach, California. Published in the Summer 1975 issue of Film Heritage. "Hell yes, I'm a liberal. I listen to both sides before I make up my mind. Doesn't that make you a liberal? Not in today's terms, it doesn't. These days, you have to be a fucking left-wing radical to be a liberal. Politically, though ... I've mellowed." - John Wayne, 1973

While the men are well meaning, he finds them undisciplined and prone to always finding excuses to do what is easy rather than what is necessary. The root of the problem is the second in command, Capt. Carl 'Griff' Griffin. Griff is the best flier in the group but Kirby finds him a poor commander who is not prepared to the difficult decision that all commanders have to make - to put men in harm's way knowing that they may be killed.
