The beauty of staying in Oia is that you can have the town almost entirely to yourself if you're willing to wake up early before the tourist buses start to arrive, which is what we did! After taking in the stunning morning views, having a simple breakfast at our Air BnB and changing our clothes (in preparation for the warmer afternoon temperature), we took the bus from Oia to Fira.
In Fira we decided to rent a car for 24 hours for just 32 Euro with full insurance (this price does not include gas). Renting a car allowed us to see much more in one day than would have been possible using the bus system.
We started our island tour by driving south to the village/town of Pirgos, which offered the most gorgeous views of the lower lying towns and sea! We were amazed by how few tourists there were in Pirgos given its rustic charm and breathtaking views. We highly recommend visiting Pirgos! While you're there, you might want to stop in at the Kastelli 1663 Art Gallery & Cafe where you can get a scrumptious snack, like affogato (espresso poured over a scoop of ice cream...drool!!) for just 3 Euro.
Next we drove to Perissa, one of Santorini's famous black sand beaches. Perissa and Kamari (another town home to black sand beaches) are separated by the mountain atop which is Ancient Thira. Tim was especially excited to go for a swim in the cool Aegean Sea! The beach is lined with restaurants that provide comfortable beach chairs and umbrellas free of charge as long as you order food and/or drink, which is reasonably priced. Beware that the beach is topless!
After lunch and a swim, we headed to the Akrotiri archaeological site, where you can see the remnants of homes, roads and pottery dating from the 17th Century BC!! Our final stop of the day was the lighthouse. It was uncrowded, the view was fantastic, and the breeze was refreshing!
Today we learned that you have to leave the tourist centers of Oia and Fira in order to truly experience all that the amazing island of Santorini has to offer to visitors!

Pirgos Dirou to niewielka wioska w Grecji, położona w południowej części Peloponezu na zachodnim wybrzeżu półwyspu Mani oddalonego o około 11 km w kierunku południowym od Areópolis. Tym co przyciąga tu wielu turystów są wydrążone w wapiennych skałach przed wiekami przez morską wodę niezwykle malownicze Jaskinie Dirou. Cały kompleks składa się z trzech głównych grot: największej Glifady, mniejszej Alepotripy i najmniejszej Katafigi.
Wytyczona trasa turystyczna liczy sobie blisko 2 km z czego przeszło połowę stanowią krystaliczne czyste jeziora które pokonuje się łodziami.
Jaskinie charakteryzują się bogatą i wielobarwną szatą naciekową w postaci licznych stalaktytów i stalagmitów. Całości wrażenia dopełnia zainstalowane w grotach artystyczne oświetlenie.
Jaskinie Dirou zamieszkiwane były już w czasach prehistorycznych, jednak później wejścia zostały zasypane podczas trzęsienia ziemi. Powtórnie odkryto i zbadano je dopiero w pierwszej połowie XX wieku. W czasie prac speleologom udało się odkryć skamieniałe szczątki zwierząt żyjących na ziemi przeszło 2 miliony lat temu.
Dla turystów jaskinie udostępnione są dopiero od 1967 roku. W sezonie letnim są one wręcz oblegane przez rzesze turystów. Temperatura wewnątrz grot waha się w granicach od 12 do 19 stopni Celsjusza. Przy wejściu do jaskini Alepotripa znajduje się niewielkie Muzeum Neolitu w którym obejrzeć można liczne znaleziska pochodzące z tego okresu.

The beauty of staying in Oia is that you can have the town almost entirely to yourself if you're willing to wake up early before the tourist buses start to arrive, which is what we did! After taking in the stunning morning views, having a simple breakfast at our Air BnB and changing our clothes (in preparation for the warmer afternoon temperature), we took the bus from Oia to Fira.
In Fira we decided to rent a car for 24 hours for just 32 Euro with full insurance (this price does not include gas). Renting a car allowed us to see much more in one day than would have been possible using the bus system.
We started our island tour by driving south to the village/town of Pirgos, which offered the most gorgeous views of the lower lying towns and sea! We were amazed by how few tourists there were in Pirgos given its rustic charm and breathtaking views. We highly recommend visiting Pirgos! While you're there, you might want to stop in at the Kastelli 1663 Art Gallery & Cafe where you can get a scrumptious snack, like affogato (espresso poured over a scoop of ice cream...drool!!) for just 3 Euro.
Next we drove to Perissa, one of Santorini's famous black sand beaches. Perissa and Kamari (another town home to black sand beaches) are separated by the mountain atop which is Ancient Thira. Tim was especially excited to go for a swim in the cool Aegean Sea! The beach is lined with restaurants that provide comfortable beach chairs and umbrellas free of charge as long as you order food and/or drink, which is reasonably priced. Beware that the beach is topless!
After lunch and a swim, we headed to the Akrotiri archaeological site, where you can see the remnants of homes, roads and pottery dating from the 17th Century BC!! Our final stop of the day was the lighthouse. It was uncrowded, the view was fantastic, and the breeze was refreshing!
Today we learned that you have to leave the tourist centers of Oia and Fira in order to truly experience all that the amazing island of Santorini has to offer to visitors!

Pirgos Dirou to niewielka wioska w Grecji, położona w południowej części Peloponezu na zachodnim wybrzeżu półwyspu Mani oddalonego o około 11 km w kierunku południowym od Areópolis. Tym co przyciąga tu wielu turystów są wydrążone w wapiennych skałach przed wiekami przez morską wodę niezwykle malownicze Jaskinie Dirou. Cały kompleks składa się z trzech głównych grot: największej Glifady, mniejszej Alepotripy i najmniejszej Katafigi.
Wytyczona trasa turystyczna liczy sobie blisko 2 km z czego przeszło połowę stanowią krystaliczne czyste jeziora które pokonuje się łodziami.
Jaskinie charakteryzują się bogatą i wielobarwną szatą naciekową w postaci licznych stalaktytów i stalagmitów. Całości wrażenia dopełnia zainstalowane w grotach artystyczne oświetlenie.
Jaskinie Dirou zamieszkiwane były już w czasach prehistorycznych, jednak później wejścia zostały zasypane podczas trzęsienia ziemi. Powtórnie odkryto i zbadano je dopiero w pierwszej połowie XX wieku. W czasie prac speleologom udało się odkryć skamieniałe szczątki zwierząt żyjących na ziemi przeszło 2 miliony lat temu.
Dla turystów jaskinie udostępnione są dopiero od 1967 roku. W sezonie letnim są one wręcz oblegane przez rzesze turystów. Temperatura wewnątrz grot waha się w granicach od 12 do 19 stopni Celsjusza. Przy wejściu do jaskini Alepotripa znajduje się niewielkie Muzeum Neolitu w którym obejrzeć można liczne znaleziska pochodzące z tego okresu.

Ο πύργος μονοφατσίου βρίσκεται στα νότια του νομού ηρακλείου. είναι το τέρμα του οδικού άξονα Ηράκλειο -- χουδέτσι\ αρχάνες - τεφέλι - λυγόρτυνος -- πύργος κι έχει απέχει από το ηράκλειο 49 χιλιόμετρα . από τον πύργο διέρχεται ο νότιος οδικός άξονας Κρήτης Ρέθυμνο -- Ιεράπετρα .
Είναι χτισμένος στις βόρειες υπώρειες των κεντρικών αστερουσίων σε υψόμετρο 290 μέτρων(χάρακας μονοφατσίου 290, πραιτώρια μονοφατσιου 230, μουρνιά μονοφατσιου 600,πρινιάς μονοφατσίου 550, παρανύμφοι μονοφατσιου 550, εθιά μονοφατσιου 710),ενώ βόρεια απλώνεται ο κάμπος της μεσαράς. Διοικητικά ανήκει στον νεο δήμο(λόγω καλεικρατη) αρχανών - αστερουσίων.η κομώπολη εχει 1200 κατοίκους. Διαρρέεται από τρείς χείμαρρους, οι οποίοι συγκεντρώνουν τα βρόχινα νερά των αστερουσίων.
Ο σημερινός οικισμός καλογερικό, που παλαιότερα αποτελούσε αυτοτελές χωριό, είναι ενωμένος με το κυρίως χωριό σε ένα ενιαίο σύνολο. Ο πύργος έχει σχήμα επίμηκες, ανατολικά προς δυτικά σε μήκος δύο χιλιόμετρα περίπου. Τα τελευταία χρόνια, λόγω του κεντρικού δρόμου, της λεωφόρου Κύριλλου κυπριωτάκη, προς τιμήν του συχωριανού μας μακαριστού μητροπολίτη γορτύνης και Αρκαδίας,που τον συνδέει με το ηράκλειο, το χωριό αναπτύσσεται βόρεια με νέες οικοδομές, όπου μεταφέρεται μεγάλο μέρος της οικονομικής δραστηριότητας.Οι κάτοικοι ασχολούνται κυρίως με τη γεωργία και παράγονται λάδι, επιτραπέζια σταφύλια. Μεταξύ άλλων, στον οικισμό λειτουργούν ΚΕΠ,παιδικός σταθμός,νηπιαγωγείο Δημοτικό Σχολείο,Γυμνάσιο,ΚΑΠΉ, περιφερειακό ιατρείο, τράπεζα, δημοτικό αναψυκτήριο στο δασάκι του χωριου, συμβολαιογραφείο, αστυνομικός σταθμός-τμημα, ταχυδρομείο, ΟΤΕ και άλλα. Στα δυτικά του Πύργου υπάρχει το δάσος του χωριου.Ιεροί ναοί στον Πύργο είναι της Αγίας Ειρήνης με σύνχρονες αγιογραφίες απο σύνχρονο αγιογράφο που εντυποσιάζουν τον επισκέπτη, η δίκλιτη του Αγίου Γεωργίου και Αγίου Κωνσταντίνου, με τοιχογραφίες και με επιγραφές από τον 7ο αιώνα και το 1314, της Μεταμόρφωσης του Σωτήρος ο οποίος εινα ο πολυούχος του χωριόυ και εορτάζει στις 6 αυγούστου που γιορταζει το χωριο, και του Αγίου Ραφαήλ Νικολάου και Ειρηνης των Νεομαρτύρων.επίσης απέναντι από τον ναό τους τελευταίους μήνες βρίσκετε υπο ανέγερση το γηροκομείο της ενορίας πύργου. Το χωριό πανηγυρίζει στις 6 Αυγούστου. Σύμφωνα με την παράδοση, στη θέση της πολιούχου εκκλησίας της Μεταμορφώσεως ήταν μοναστήρι με καλογριές.

Τα τελευταία χρόνια, λόγω του κεντρικού δρόμου, της λεωφόρου Κύριλλου κυπριωτάκη, προς τιμήν του συχωριανού μας μακαριστού μητροπολίτη γορτύνης και Αρκαδίας,που τον συνδέει με το ηράκλειο, το χωριό αναπτύσσεται βόρεια με νέες οικοδομές, όπου μεταφέρεται μεγάλο μέρος της οικονομικής δραστηριότητας.Οι κάτοικοι ασχολούνται κυρίως με τη γεωργία και παράγονται λάδι, επιτραπέζια σταφύλια. Μεταξύ άλλων, στον οικισμό λειτουργούν ΚΕΠ,παιδικός σταθμός,νηπιαγωγείο Δημοτικό Σχολείο,Γυμνάσιο,ΚΑΠΉ, περιφερειακό ιατρείο, τράπεζα, δημοτικό αναψυκτήριο στο δασάκι του χωριου, συμβολαιογραφείο, αστυνομικός σταθμός-τμημα, ταχυδρομείο, ΟΤΕ και άλλα. Στα δυτικά του Πύργου υπάρχει το δάσος του χωριου.Ιεροί ναοί στον Πύργο είναι της Αγίας Ειρήνης με σύνχρονες αγιογραφίες απο σύνχρονο αγιογράφο που εντυποσιάζουν τον επισκέπτη, η δίκλιτη του Αγίου Γεωργίου και Αγίου Κωνσταντίνου, με τοιχογραφίες και με επιγραφές από τον 7ο αιώνα και το 1314, της Μεταμόρφωσης του Σωτήρος ο οποίος εινα ο πολυούχος του χωριόυ και εορτάζει στις 6 αυγούστου που γιορταζει το χωριο, και του Αγίου Ραφαήλ Νικολάου και Ειρηνης των Νεομαρτύρων.επίσης απέναντι από τον ναό τους τελευταίους μήνες βρίσκετε υπο ανέγερση το γηροκομείο της ενορίας πύργου. Το χωριό πανηγυρίζει στις 6 Αυγούστου. Σύμφωνα με την παράδοση, στη θέση της πολιούχου εκκλησίας της Μεταμορφώσεως ήταν μοναστήρι με καλογριές.
