Michalis Tzouganakis has been born on July 31, 1969, in Beringen, Belgium. His parents came from Crete, region Sfakia, and together with his brothers and sisters they returned to Crete when Michalis was about nine years old. He started to play the lute when he was about two and a half years old.
When he is thirteen he meets the famous lute master Leonidas Klados, who is from that time on his Lute teacher.

The earliest documented music on Crete comes from Ancient Greece. Cretan music like most traditional Greek began as product of ancient, Byzantine, western and eastern inspirations. The main instrument lyra, is closely related to the bowed Byzantine lyra. The Persian geographer Ibn Khordadbeh (d. 911) of the 9th Century, in his lexicographical discussion of instruments, cited the Byzantine lyra (Greek: λύρα - lūrā), as similar to the Arabic rebab and a typical Byzantine instrument along with the urghun (organ), shilyani (probably a type of harp or lyre) and the salandj. Bowed instruments descendants of the Byzantine bowed lyra (lūrā) have continued to be played in post-Byzantine regions until the present day with few changes, for example the Calabrian Lira in Italy, the Cretan Lyra, the Gadulka in Bulgaria, and the Armudî kemençe (or πολίτικη λύρα) in Istanbul, Turkey.

Stelios Petrakis is one of the is the most popular representative of the new generation of Cretan music. He studied the lyra and also became interested in related musical traditions (Anatolian folk music, classical secular and religious music of Istanbul, traditional Greek music) and instruments (saz, Politiko and Cretan laouto, bulgari, Politiki lyra).
Giorgos Manolakis was born in Heraklion, Crete in 1982. Today Giorgos is considered to be one of the most important virtuosos of his generation on lyra, laoute & bouzouki. Οι μουσικές του δεξιότητες αναδεικνύονται μέσα από τα διαφορετικά μουσικά όργανα που επιλέγει, όπως το μαντολίνο, ο τζουράς, ο μπαγλαμάς και η κιθάρα. Pentozali is a very ancient war dance and in the past it was danced only by men. Now it is danced by women too. Its origin is from the ancient war dance, the Pyrrhichios (Pyrrhic dance ):

Pyrrha is the name of the mythic mother of the Greek nation. It's been said that Achilles danced this dance in honor of dead Patroklos around his funeral fire (pyre) and also his son Pyrrhos (Neoptolemus)danced it at Troy and gave his name to the dance. Pyrrhichios was danced at all the places of Ancient Greece, but especially in Sparta. Another possible origin of the name of the dance: the Ancient city Pyrrichos in Mani peninsula, Laconia, Greece was said to be named after Pyrrhichos, who invented the dance. Pyrrhichos was promised to Achilles for his participation in the Trojan War.

Crete (Greek: Κρήτη; [kriti]) is the largest and most populous of the Greek islands, the fifth-largest island in the Mediterranean Sea, and one of the thirteen administrative regions of Greece. It forms a significant part of the economy and cultural heritage of Greece while retaining its own local cultural traits (such as its own dialect, poetry, and music). Crete was the centre of the Minoan civilization (c. 2700–1420 BC), the earliest civilization in Europe, comprising the first palaces in Europe.
The island is first referred to as Kaptara in texts from the Syrian city of Mari dating from the 18th century BC, repeated later in Neo-Assyrian records and the Bible (Caphtor). It was also known in ancient Egyptian as Keftiu, strongly suggesting some form similar to both was the Minoan name for the island.
The Mycenaean Greek name for Crete is unknown; it is not mentioned in extant Linear B texts. The name Crete (Κρήτη) first appears in Homer's Odyssey. Its etymology is unknown. One speculative proposal derives it from a hypothetical Luvian word *kursatta (cf. kursawar "island", kursattar "cutting, sliver"). In Latin, it became Creta.

Pentozali is a very ancient war dance and in the past it was danced only by men. Now it is danced by women too. Its origin is from the ancient war dance, the Pyrrhichios (Pyrrhic dance ): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pyrrhic_dance Pyrrha is the name of the mythic mother of the Greek nation. It's been said that Achilles danced this dance in honor of dead Patroklos around his funeral fire (pyre) and also his son Pyrrhos (Neoptolemus)danced it at Troy and gave his name to the dance. Pyrrhichios was danced at all the places of Ancient Greece, but especially in Sparta. Another possible origin of the name of the dance: the Ancient city Pyrrichos in Mani peninsula, Laconia, Greece was said to be named after Pyrrhichos, who invented the dance. Pentozali is a very ancient war dance and in the past it was danced only by men. Now it is danced by women too. Its origin is from the ancient war dance, the Pyrrhichios (Pyrrhic dance ): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pyrrhic_dance Pyrrha is the name of the mythic mother of the Greek nation. It's been said that Achilles danced this dance in honor of dead Patroklos around his funeral fire (pyre) and also his son Pyrrhos (Neoptolemus)danced it at Troy and gave his name to the dance. Michalis Tzouganakis has been born on July 31, 1969, in Beringen, Belgium. His parents came from Crete, region Sfakia, and together with his brothers and sisters they returned to Crete when Michalis was about nine years old. He started to play the lute when he was about two and a half years old.
When he is thirteen he meets the famous lute master Leonidas Klados, who is from that time on his Lute teacher.

The earliest documented music on Crete comes from Ancient Greece. Cretan music like most traditional Greek began as product of ancient, Byzantine, western and eastern inspirations. The main instrument lyra, is closely related to the bowed Byzantine lyra. The Persian geographer Ibn Khordadbeh (d. 911) of the 9th Century, in his lexicographical discussion of instruments, cited the Byzantine lyra (Greek: λύρα - lūrā), as similar to the Arabic rebab and a typical Byzantine instrument along with the urghun (organ), shilyani (probably a type of harp or lyre) and the salandj. Bowed instruments descendants of the Byzantine bowed lyra (lūrā) have continued to be played in post-Byzantine regions until the present day with few changes, for example the Calabrian Lira in Italy, the Cretan Lyra, the Gadulka in Bulgaria, and the Armudî kemençe (or πολίτικη λύρα) in Istanbul, Turkey.

Ο Στέλιος Πετράκης είναι ο πλέον δημοφιλής εκπρόσωπος της νέας γενιάς της Κρητικής μουσικής - και όχι μόνο. Παράλληλα με τη λύρα στρέφεται και στη μελέτη συγγενικών μουσικών παραδόσεων: λαϊκή μουσική της Ανατολίας, κλασσική κοσμική και θρησκευτική μουσική της Πόλης, παραδοσιακή μουσική του Ελλαδικού χώρου, αλλά και μουσικά όργανα όπως το saz και το βιολί.
Γιωργος Μανωλάκης: Δεξιοτέχνης στο λαούτο και το μπουζούκι, μυήθηκε σε αυτά από μικρή ηλικία κοντά στον πατέρα του Κώστα Μανωλάκη, ενώ μαθήτευσε κοντά στους δασκάλους του, Ανδρέα Στεφανάκη και Ιωσήφ Κέρπελη. Οι μουσικές του δεξιότητες αναδεικνύονται μέσα από τα διαφορετικά μουσικά όργανα που επιλέγει, όπως το μαντολίνο, ο τζουράς, ο μπαγλαμάς και η κιθάρα. Stelios Petrakis is one of the is the most popular representative of the new generation of Cretan music. He studied the lyra and also became interested in related musical traditions (Anatolian folk music, classical secular and religious music of Istanbul, traditional Greek music) and instruments (saz, Politiko and Cretan laouto, bulgari, Politiki lyra).
Giorgos Manolakis was born in Heraklion, Crete in 1982. Today Giorgos is considered to be one of the most important virtuosos of his generation on lyra, laoute & bouzouki. He has collaborated with many musicians and composers such as: Ross Daly, Hainides, Naseer Shamma, Psarantonis, Sokratis Malamas, Zohar Fresco

Ο Στέλιος Πετράκης είναι ο πλέον δημοφιλής εκπρόσωπος της νέας γενιάς της Κρητικής μουσικής - και όχι μόνο. Παράλληλα με τη λύρα στρέφεται και στη μελέτη συγγενικών μουσικών παραδόσεων: λαϊκή μουσική της Ανατολίας, κλασσική κοσμική και θρησκευτική μουσική της Πόλης, παραδοσιακή μουσική του Ελλαδικού χώρου, αλλά και μουσικά όργανα όπως το saz και το βιολί.
Γιωργος Μανωλάκης: Δεξιοτέχνης στο λαούτο και το μπουζούκι, μυήθηκε σε αυτά από μικρή ηλικία κοντά στον πατέρα του Κώστα Μανωλάκη, ενώ μαθήτευσε κοντά στους δασκάλους του, Ανδρέα Στεφανάκη και Ιωσήφ Κέρπελη. Οι μουσικές του δεξιότητες αναδεικνύονται μέσα από τα διαφορετικά μουσικά όργανα που επιλέγει, όπως το μαντολίνο, ο τζουράς, ο μπαγλαμάς και η κιθάρα. Έχει συνεργαστεί με πολλούς και σημαντικούς καλλιτέχνες, όπως οι Χαϊνηδες, Naseer Shamma, Ψαραντώνης, Σωκράτης Μάλαμας, Zohar Fresco, καθώς επίσης και με το Μουσικό Εργαστήρι Λαβύρινθος και τον Ross Daly.
