Is it possible to abolish kanji? - Hiragana and Katakana are phonetic characters. - Kanji (literally meaning Chinese letters) is like a symbol. - Japanese has a lot of homophones and homographs and kanji helps to distinguish them. - We have a set of official kanji on the joyo kanji list. - There has been a number of attempts to abolish kanji in Japanese history. - Once, John Pelzel from the Allied occupation of Japan tried to completely romanise Japanese after WWII. [Here's a bit of history of people who tried to abolish kanji] 1866 - Hisoka Maejima, a Japanese statesman, was said to send a proposal to the shogun, insisting on abolishing kanji. 1872 - Yukichi Fukuzawa, Japan's prominent figure featured in the current 10,000 yen bill, wrote about his idea of abolishing kanji. 1881 - A group of people started a movement to promote the use of kana letters in place of kanji. 1946 - Naoya Shiga, a famous Japanese novelist, suggested that Japan should adopt French as the official language. 1946 - The Yomiuri Shimbun, one of the most popular Japanese newspapers, published an editorial arguing that adopting Roman alphabet would be key to democratise the country.

On Sunday, a cuddly clan of Japanese mascots set a Guinness Record for synchronized mascot dancing, Rocket News reported. Of the 141 characters that participated, 134 continuously danced in unison for five minutes. The mascots, known as yuru-kyara, earned success on their third attempt, when less than 5 percent of them fell out of sync, according to Kyodo News. The dance, performed to "The Beard Dance" by Japanese comedy-rock band The Drifters, can't compete with Gangnam Style, but it scores high on the adorableness meter. Yuru-kyara, meaning "loose characters," maintain plush popularity in Japan, where local governments, companies, and campaigns use the mascots for brand promotion. The country boasts an estimated 1,000 yuru-kyara. Characters represent entities ranging from the Liberal Democratic Party to tax collectors to general causes like recycling. For the past three years, Japan has hosted a Yuru-Kyara Grand Prix, to crown the country's most popular fluffy friend. The 2012 event featured over 800 mascots. But until now, they've never danced as one. In the video above, it's easy to see how excited the new record makes its participants. When record officials deem the stunt a success, a celebration breaks out -- complete with hugs, high fives, and playing "We Are The Champions." We can appreciate a cuteness overload when we see one. 「Learn Japanese」 Intro to Kanji #01. What is Kanji? Kanji is the ideographic system writing system of the Japanese language that originates from Chinese characters. The kanji for kanji is 漢字 and it literally translates to “characters of the Han dynasty.” In contrast to the English language and the other two aspects of Japanese written language, hiragana and katakana, all of which are primarily phonetic, kanji is ideographic (also commonly described as logographic), which means that the characters primarily represent ideas as opposed to sounds (although every single kanji character is naturally associated with a respective set of pronunciations). For example, take the kanji 門, which can be read as “kado,” “to,” or “mon,” depending on the usage. This character is perhaps the most visually indicative of the idea it represents, as it translates to “gate” and quite literally looks like one as well (more so a traditional Japanese gate than a conventional Western gate). For the sake of comparison, the aspect of the English language that resembles the system of kanji is its implementation of numbers. In short, the sight of the character 1 is not suppose to evoke the idea of the pronunciation of “one” [wuhn] so much as it is suppose to evoke the idea of a singular existence. The same dynamic applies to kanji. Additionally similar is how 1 can be pronounced a vast number of ways (due to the fact that numbers are used in a vast number of languages but also in different instances of the same language such as in “1” and “1st”) but represents the same idea for every single pronunciation. The same goes for kanji, in that the same kanji character can be pronounced differently depending on the circumstances it is used (this variation originates from a very, very long history of Chinese characters being imported into the Japanese language, so it is interestingly enough a condition of time as opposed to the number system’s condition of space). However, despite kanji’s status as a system of characters that are suppose to graphically represent ideas, not all kanji give a clear idea graphically of what they represent. For instance, while the kanji for “meat,” 肉, visually resembles meat on bones, none of the kanji that are used to mean “circle” (丸, 輪, 円) look like the shape of a circle at all. Kanji can also be misleading, such as the character 口, which looks like the shape of a square but actually represents the concept of “mouth.” In due consideration to this, the visual depiction of a kanji is an ultimately an unreliable method in deciphering its meaning. ✧¸¸.•*¨*• •*¨*•.¸¸✧ Support Learning Japanese on Patreon! Original scripts below! 　２０１２年ゴールデンウィーク　江南にて　　　ソウルに来て五日目。ホテルで出会ったジョンというぽっちゃりしたノルウェイ人と江南を散策中。出発して三時間が経った頃。「腹減んない？」　僕がジョンに聞く。「ああ。何か食べよう」「和食なんかどう？」「和食が何だかよく分からんけど、カニと生きてるもの以外は大丈夫」「なら問題ない。行こ」　十分後、「あびこ」？　と黒い文字で書かれたレストランを発見して中に入る。英語で挨拶してみると、いきなり「^NO^」と言われたので、日本語できますかと聞いてみる。すると今度は「NOT JAPAN」と片言の英語で逆ギレされる。まあ落ち着いてミスター金と思いながら、「so sorry」と言って、二名、と言う代わりに「ピース」をする。　テーブルにつく。間もなくチャン・グンソクにそっくりな女が現れ、水とも麦茶ともつかない飲み物とメニューを渡してきた。各ページの最初にだけ「前菜」、「定食」、「寿司」、という風に漢字が書かれている。それ以外は全部ハングルだ。ふとメニューから目を上げると、ジョンの目が泳いでいる。「どうする？　大丈夫？」「絶対大丈夫。ちゃんとした和食レストランなら何を頼んでも外れはないから」　そう言った僕は「チョギョー」とグンソク女史を呼び、「定食」のところに載っている、ジャパニーズで言えば千円のものを適当に指差す。そして「……two」とゆっくり言いながら、またピースをする。グンソクは「デー」と言って厨房に消えた。　十分後、生きたままのカニしか乗っていない皿が運ばれてきた。　　　要は、ちゃんとした和食レストランじゃなかったってことだ。 Golden Week 2012. Gangnam 5th day in Seoul. Out on the town with Jon, a husky Norwegian I met in the hotel lobby. 3 hours into our journey.“You Hungry?” I ask Jon. “Yea, let’s grab something.” “You like Japanese?” “I don’t know really what constitutes Japanese, but I’m cool with anything except living food and crabs." “Alright, no problem then. Keep your eyes open.” 10 minutes later I spot a restaurant with the letters “Abiko” ? written on its side. We go inside. I try greeting the staff in English but am met with an abrupt NO. I switch to Nihongo, asking if anyone can speak Samurai. "THIS IS NOT JAPAN.” Naturally. I apologize to Mr. Kim, and indicate 2 with a peace sign. We sit down at the table. Before long a woman closely resembling the male actor Jang Keun-suk appears and gives us two cups of watered down barley tea and a set of menus. On the top of each page of the menu there are Japanese Kanji characters. “Appetizers,” “Sets,” “Sushi.” Everything else is in Hangul. I look up from the menu at Jon. His eyes are plagued with fear and uncertainty. “Should we bail? Is it ok?” “It’s cool. As long as this is a proper Japanese restaurant we’ll be fine.” I call back Ms. Keun-suk and point to a 1000 yen equivalent item in the “Sets” section. Then, cautiously, make another peace sign, and slowly say “….two.” Keun-suk replies with a, “Deee” and disappears into the kitchen. 10 minutes later, we got a single live crab on a plate. Not a proper Japanese restaurant.

「Learn Japanese」 Intro to Kanji #02. Advantages & Disadvantages ADVANTAGES Clarity With just hiragana and katakana, the Japanese language suffers from one same issue as the English language: many words have multiple definitions that you have no way of telling without context. In Japanese, because there are so many kanji and they all represent ideas, you can instantly tell which meaning the word is referring to despite every meaning having the same pronunciation (provided you have memorized the required characters). One such example is the word “kanji” itself, which has more than five different meanings, but you can tell instantly which one is which if you’re using kanji. 漢字 means “Chinese characters” and 感じ means “feeling” and both are pronounced “kanji.” Compression & Processing In the same way that 999,999 is much easier to process than “nine hundred ninety-nine thousand nine hundred and ninety-nine,” kanji characters are much easier to process than their hiragana counterparts. Additionally, for whatever reason, the Japanese language does not employ spaces between every word; kanji eases this burden a considerable amount by representing ideas while hiragana is typically used to represent grammatical necessities (you can essentially tell when a word ends when kanji switches to hiragana or vice versa). Given this, forsaking kanji is tantamount to reading written English without any spaces. However, beyond the issue of spaces, kanji ultimately compresses written language tremendously. To illustrate, imagine if a lengthy English word such as “internalization” could be represented by one single character. (It is much easier to Tweet your ideas in Japanese without worrying about the 140 character limit than it is in English!) Transcendence Theoretically, because the characters predominantly represent ideas and can garner more pronunciations as time goes on, kanji could transcend the Japanese language and find its way into all languages of the world, just like the system of numbers all but do. Unfortunately, it’s not so simple to propogate one universal system to the entire world. However, because kanji derives from written Chinese language, a command of Japanese kanji naturally comes with a fraction of an ability to make out the meaning of some Chinese words (without even knowing how to pronounce them, which is the beauty of ideograms). DISADVANTAGES Volume It is ultimately unrealistic to create and use a writing system wherein the characters represent every single idea. Given the essentially infinite amount of ideas in the universe, which is only increasing with each passing day, one would have the memorize an infinite amount of graphic representations, or pictures, by heart just to be able to communicate in written language. The Japanese kanji system overcomes this by having its characters instead represent a set of ideas as opposed to very specific, individual ideas (this in turn results in another issue in and of itself albeit it isn’t nearly as daunting as conquering infinity). This results in there being approximately 50,000 kanji characters since the dawn of time. In the present day, the Japanese government has issued a set of approximately 2,000 most commonly used kanji, which should altogether be sufficient for being literate with modern media. as compulsory education ✧¸¸.•*¨*• •*¨*•.¸¸✧ Support Learning Japanese on Patreon!
