An acoustic, electric guitar lesson on how to play "
Lyin' Eyes" by
The Eagles from the “
One of These Nights”
album released in
1975. It was nominated for record of the year.
Last week it was
David Bowie passing away, and now this week
Glenn Frey. So far 2016 has been rough on music icons…
Glenn Frey has written some amazing songs.
Ones that folks will be listening to a hundred years from now. There was something magical about the
Eagles in the early days. They had that dreamy
California laid back thing going on, but behind that vibe was some pretty awesome musicianship.
I’ve always really loved this song. Glenn Frey and
Don Henley captured the magic somehow with it.
I remember when I first heard it all I wanted to do was listen to it again! It tells a great story, almost like a movie in a song kinda thing. When
Frey and
Henley sing those 2 part harmonies in the verses, it’s just magic and when
Randy Meisner and
Bernie Leadon come in, in the chorus it’s amazing. The Eagles harmonies were unreal!
Then there’s the guitar fills played by Bernie Leadon. For me, these fills make the song. He’s such a great country player and learning these fills is an education in country style licks.
I hope you find the lesson useful and I hope you have fun playing this great song.
I get a lot of questions about my sound so here's what I'm using:
The acoustic guitar I'm playing here is a
Taylor 214ce koa deluxe. I really like this guitar, it intonates amazingly well and its tone is very balanced.
It's also very easy to play.
The strings are
Elixir phosphor bronze 12-53 with nanoweb coating. These strings are a little bit more expensive, but for me they easily last 4-5 times longer than non-coated strings.
My electric guitar is a 1975
Gibson Les Paul Deluxe. I have
Suhr Aldrich pickups on it. I have them coil split, but for this video they were in full humbucker mode.
I use
Elixir strings nanoweb 10-46. These are the best strings I’ve ever used. They last 5 times longer than uncoated strings and always sound great.
My amp is an Egnater
Renegade head. I am using a Two
Notes Torpedo Live.
It’s a load box and a speaker emulator so I’m not running the
Marshall 1960b speaker cabinet anymore. It enables you to crank up your tube amp but use headphones, or just listen at low volume through your monitors, so I can be rocking out and getting a great sound without bothering people around me.
So far I like it!
I use a
TC Electronics Nova System through the loop for effects. I also have a BB preamp which I essentially never use anymore, and sometimes (rarely) a
Boss CS-3 compressor. The reverb is from the amp. My wah is a
Dunlop MC404
CAE Dual Inductor, REALLY great pedal! I also use a Polytune tuner which is fantastic.
Folks may be surprised at how much time and effort goes into creating these videos. If you're getting something out of the lessons and can afford to contribute,
I've setup a Paypal link. If you can't afford it no worries, but if you can, any amount is appreciated and will help me to continue to make the videos.

Good luck to everyone with their guitar playing.
Cheers
