Lynn Thorndike

Lynn Thorndike (24 July 1882, Lynn, Massachusetts, USA – 28 December 1965, Columbia University Club, New York City) was an American historian of medieval science and alchemy. He was the younger brother of Ashley Horace Thorndike and Edward Lee Thorndike.

Education and teaching career

Thorndike studied at Wesleyan University, Middletown, Connecticut (Bachelor of Arts, 1902), and then medieval history at Columbia University (Master of Arts 1903, Doctorate 1905). Thorndike's doctoral dissertation (1905) was about "The Place of Magic in the Intellectual History of Europe", which he went on to link with the historical development of experimental science.

He began teaching medieval history at Northwestern University in 1907. He moved to Western Reserve University in 1909 and stayed there until 1924. Columbia University lured him away in fall 1924 and he taught there until he retired from teaching in 1950.

Writing career

After retiring from teaching, Thorndike continued to publish for an additional ten years and in 1957 received the Sarton Medal from the History of Science Society. He served as the president there in 1929 and also served as president of the American Historical Association.

The language is written in the form of HTML elements consisting of tags enclosed in angle brackets (like <html>). Browsers do not display the HTML tags and scripts, but use them to interpret the content of the page.

Sybil Thorndike

Dame Agnes Sybil Thorndike CH, DBE (24 October 1882 – 9 June 1976) was an English actress who toured internationally in Shakespearean productions, often appearing with her husband Lewis Casson. Bernard Shaw wrote Saint Joan specially for her, and she starred in it with great success. She was made Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 1931, and Companion of Honour in 1970.

Early life

Thorndike was born in Gainsborough, Lincolnshire, to Arthur Thorndike and Agnes Macdonald. Her father was a Canon of Rochester Cathedral. She was educated at Rochester Grammar School for Girls, and first trained as a classical pianist, making weekly visits to London for music lessons at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama.

Her childhood home in Rochester has been renamed after her.

She gave her first public performance as a pianist at the age of 11, but in 1899 was forced to give up playing owing to piano cramp. At the instigation of her brother, the author Russell Thorndike, she then trained as an actress.

Olavo de Carvalho

Olavo Luiz Pimentel de Carvalho (born 29 April 1947), also known as Olavo de Carvalho, is a Brazilian essayist whose interests include historical philosophy, the history of revolutionary movements, Kremlinology, the traditionalist school, comparative religion, psychology, and philosophical anthropology. He is known in Brazil for his conservative political stance, and for being a critic of the political Left.

Career

He taught political philosophy at the Pontifical Catholic University of Paraná, Brazil, from 2001 to 2005. He moved to the United States, and works as an international correspondent. He writes a weekly column for the Brazilian newspaper Diário do Comércio and teaches philosophy in an online course to over 2,000 students. Carvalho has previously written for several other magazines and newspapers, such as Bravo!, Primeira Leitura, Claudia, O Globo, Folha de S.Paulo, Época and Zero Hora, and taught philosophy to a smaller circle of students while still living in Brazil. He introduced to Portuguese speaking readers works of important philosophers of the 20th century, such as Eric Voegelin,Xavier Zubiri, Bernard Lonergan, René Guénon, and Frithjof Schuon, and can be credited with being responsible for the rediscovery of Brazilian philosopher Mário Ferreira dos Santos in the lusophone world. He has commented on and developed original research and theories on the works of Aristotle.
