Ann-Marie MacDonald - Internationally Renowned Novelist | Playwright and Actress | Television Host
Ann-Marie MacDonald is a novelist, playwright, actor, and broadcaster, whose formal training was as an actor. As such, she is an unusual hybrid among literary figures in that she is as at home on stage engaging a live audience, as she is at her desk. Her presentations are a combination of careful crafting and spontaneous exchange with the audience.
Ann-Marie hosted and narrated
CBC TV’s acclaimed documentary series,
Life and Times and Doc
Zone. Her work as a film and television actor has been honoured with a
Genie Nomination and a
Gemini Award. She has performed in theatres across the country, and counts among her favourite shows
Mirvish Productions’
Cloud Nine and Top
Girls at
Soulpepper Theatre. She is the author of numerous plays, including
Goodnight Desdemona (
Good Morning Juliet) and
Belle Moral: A
Natural History. As well, she has co-created numerous collective creations, including
This is For You, Anna, and
The Attic,
The Pearls and 3
Fine Girls. She has also worked in music theatre, writing the libretto for the chamber opera
Nigredo Hotel and book and lyrics for the musical,
Anything That Moves. Her works continue to be staged across
North America, in the UK, and in translation in
Europe and
Asia, and have been honoured with a
Chalmers Prize, a
Dora Mavor Moore Award and numerous
Dora nominations.
Ann-Marie is the author of three novels,
Fall On Your Knees,
The Way the Crow Flies, and, recently,
Adult Onset. These works are international bestsellers which have been translated in over a dozen languages. They have been honoured with numerous nominations, including the
Scotiabank Giller Prize Shortlist, and have won the
Commonwealth Prize for
First Novel,
The Canadian Authors
Association Award, and The Canadian Booksellers Association Libris
Awards for
Fiction Book of the Year and
People’s Choice. Her first novel, Fall On Your Knees, was an
Oprah’s Book Club pick, and The Way the Crow Flies was an
NBC’s Today Show Book
Club selection.
She is a graduate of the
National Theatre School of Canada, where she continues to coach students in the Acting
Program. She is also the inaugural
Mordecai Richler Reading Room Writer in Residence at
Concordia University.
