Homemade Red Licorice Twists- with yoyomax12

Make your own homemade red Twizzlers! These tasted remarkably like the store bought candy, but had a completely different texture. Candy making playlist: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLQhvHiBS6HlF8Z7ps3Vcf4Ui3BarvhaiP 1/3 cup unsalted butter 3/4 cup sugar 1/2 cup corn syrup 1/3 cup sweetened condensed milk Pinch of salt (I didn't add any as I used salted butter in mine) 1/2 cup plus 2 tbsp all purpose flour Cherry flavoured candy oil (I used 10-15 drops) 1 tsp red food colouring (liquid) or a few drops of paste food colour. Butter a 9 inch square baking pan (I used and 8x8" and it was fine) Line with parchment paper, allowing pieces to hang over the edges of the pan. Grease the parchment. Combine the butter, sugar, syrup, sweetened condensed milk and salt (if using) in a medium sized saucepan over medium heat. Cook until the butter has melted and sugar is dissolved. Continue to cook until the mixture reaches 250 to 255F. Reduce the heat to medium low if you find the bottom burning. You have to stir this pretty much continuously. The colour will darken as the mixture caramelizes, but I think this is normal. Once you reach the proper temperature, remove it from the heat and stir in the flour, colour and flavouring oil. Pour into prepared pan and allow to cool for about 30 minutes. Allow to cool until you can handle it without burning your hands and so that it is fairly set. Set enough so that when you cut it with a knife it stays in a rope shape. Slice into 1/4" slices and twist. Cut into desired lengths. ***to make black licorice follow the same instructions, but reduce the corn syrup to 1/3 cup and add 2 tbsp of molasses. Use anise oil instead of cherry and add black food colouring instead of red. BE SURE TO PUT YOUR POT/SPOONS IN A SINK FULL OF HOT WATER and the candy will just melt off after a bit. This recipe found in the LCBO magazine called "FOOD & DRINK HOLIDAY 2014" Store in an airtight container at room temperature. Home Made Black Licorice Squares

This is a nice blend of flavors, combining mild black licorice with buttery caramel. After testing several home-made licorice recipes, we decided this was the one we liked most. Here is what you will need: 1 Cup Butter 2 Cups Granulated Sugar 1 Cup Light Corn Syrup 14 Ounce Can Sweetened Condensed Milk 1 or 2 Teaspoons Anise Extract (we used 1, this is the licorice flavor) 1/2 Teaspoon Black Food Coloring Pinch Salt Start out by melting the butter over medium heat. Once melted, add the condensed milk, sugar and corn syrup. Heat mixture to 245F, stirring frequently to constantly so it does not burn. Once at the desired temperature, remove from the heat, then add your anise extract and food coloring, stir to blend. Transfer the candy to a 9" x 9" pan lined with foil and sprayed with a light coat of cooking oil. Allow to cool and set overnight before cutting into single serving sized pieces. Wrap individually and store in refrigerator. Liquorice or licorice (/ˈlɪkᵊrɪʃ/ LIK-(ə-)rish or /ˈlɪkᵊrɪs/ LIK-(ə-)ris) is the root of Glycyrrhiza glabra from which a somewhat sweet flavour can be extracted. The liquorice plant is a legume (related to beans and peas) that is native to southern Europe and parts of Asia. It is not related to anise, star anise, or fennel, which are the sources of similar-tasting flavouring compounds. The word 'liquorice'/'licorice' is derived (via the Old French licoresse), from the Greek γλυκύρριζα (glukurrhiza), meaning "sweet root", from γλυκύς (glukus), "sweet" + ῥίζα (rhiza), "root", the name provided by Dioscorides.

It is a herbaceous perennial, growing to 1 m in height, with pinnate leaves about 7–15 centimeters (3–6 in) long, with 9–17 leaflets. The flowers are 0.8–1.2 cm (½–⅓ in) long, purple to pale whitish blue, produced in a loose inflorescence. The fruit is an oblong pod, 2–3 centimetres (1 in) long, containing several seeds. The roots are stoloniferous. The flavor of liquorice comes mainly from a sweet-tasting compound called anethole ("trans"-1-methoxy-4-(prop-1-enyl)benzene), an aromatic, unsaturated ether compound also found in anise, fennel, and several other herbs. Much of the sweetness in liquorice comes from glycyrrhizin, a compound sweeter than sugar.

This is a nice blend of flavors, combining mild black licorice with buttery caramel. After testing several home-made licorice recipes, we decided this was the one we liked most. Here is what you will need: 1 Cup Butter 2 Cups Granulated Sugar 1 Cup Light Corn Syrup 14 Ounce Can Sweetened Condensed Milk 1 or 2 Teaspoons Anise Extract (we used 1, this is the licorice flavor) 1/2 Teaspoon Black Food Coloring Pinch Salt Start out by melting the butter over medium heat. Once melted, add the condensed milk, sugar and corn syrup. Heat mixture to 245F, stirring frequently to constantly so it does not burn. Once at the desired temperature, remove from the heat, then add your anise extract and food coloring, stir to blend. Transfer the candy to a 9" x 9" pan lined with foil and sprayed with a light coat of cooking oil. Allow to cool and set overnight before cutting into single serving sized pieces. Wrap individually and store in refrigerator. Home Made Black Licorice Squares
This is a nice blend of flavors, combining mild black licorice with buttery caramel. After testing several home-made licorice recipes, we decided this was the one we liked most. Here is what you will need: 1 Cup Butter 2 Cups Granulated Sugar 1 Cup Light Corn Syrup 14 Ounce Can Sweetened Condensed Milk 1 or 2 Teaspoons Anise Extract (we used 1, this is the licorice flavor) 1/2 Teaspoon Black Food Coloring Pinch Salt Start out by melting the butter over medium heat. Once melted, add the condensed milk, sugar and corn syrup. Heat mixture to 245F, stirring frequently to constantly so it does not burn. Health Alert: Black Licorice Candy Warning
CINCINNATI (Liz Bonis) -- A word of caution before Halloween about a popular kind of candy. Research shows it could be hard on your heart. Medical reporter Liz Bonis shares details in Wednesday's Health Alert. Not sure what kind of candy you are passing out this Halloween, but this report found a word of caution about licorice this time of year. Local 12 has details from the Cleveland Clinic where researchers found those who especially like black licorice, two ounces a day for two weeks is enough to raise the risk of an irregular heartbeat. Black licorice contains a compound that comes from the licorice root. It may lower potassium levels which can impact heart rhythm. It's also possible that a second compound in black licorice called glycyrrhizin, it's a sweetening compound in licorice...

Candy making playlist: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLQhvHiBS6HlF8Z7ps3Vcf4Ui3BarvhaiP 1/3 cup unsalted butter 3/4 cup sugar 1/2 cup corn syrup 1/3 cup sweetened condensed milk Pinch of salt (I didn't add any as I used salted butter in mine) 1/2 cup plus 2 tbsp all purpose flour Cherry flavoured candy oil (I used 10-15 drops) 1 tsp red food colouring (liquid) or a few drops of paste food colour. Butter a 9 inch square baking pan (I used and 8x8" and it was fine) Line with parchment paper, allowing pieces to hang over the edges of the pan. Grease the parchment. Combine the butter, sugar, syrup, sweetened condensed milk and salt (if using) in a medium sized saucepan over medium heat. Cook until the butter has melted and sugar is dissolved. Continue to cook until the mixture reaches 250 to 255F. Reduce the heat to medium low if you find the bottom burning. You have to stir this pretty much continuously. The colour will darken as the mixture caramelizes, but I think this is normal. Once you reach the proper temperature, remove it from the heat and stir in the flour, colour and flavouring oil. Pour into prepared pan and allow to cool for about 30 minutes. Allow to cool until you can handle it without burning your hands and so that it is fairly set. Set enough so that when you cut it with a knife it stays in a rope shape. Slice into 1/4" slices and twist. Cut into desired lengths. ***to make black licorice follow the same instructions, but reduce the corn syrup to 1/3 cup and add 2 tbsp of molasses. Use anise oil instead of cherry and add black food colouring instead of red. BE SURE TO PUT YOUR POT/SPOONS IN A SINK FULL OF HOT WATER and the candy will just melt off after a bit. This recipe found in the LCBO magazine called "FOOD & DRINK HOLIDAY 2014" Store in an airtight container at room temperature. This is a nice blend of flavors, combining mild black licorice with buttery caramel. After testing several home-made licorice recipes, we decided this was the one we liked most. Here is what you will need: 1 Cup Butter 2 Cups Granulated Sugar 1 Cup Light Corn Syrup 14 Ounce Can Sweetened Condensed Milk 1 or 2 Teaspoons Anise Extract (we used 1, this is the licorice flavor) 1/2 Teaspoon Black Food Coloring Pinch Salt Start out by melting the butter over medium heat. Once melted, add the condensed milk, sugar and corn syrup. Heat mixture to 245F, stirring frequently to constantly so it does not burn. Once at the desired temperature, remove from the heat, then add your anise extract and food coloring, stir to blend. Transfer the candy to a 9" x 9" pan lined with foil and sprayed with a light coat of cooking oil. Allow to cool and set overnight before cutting into single serving sized pieces. Wrap individually and store in refrigerator. Medical reporter Liz Bonis shares details in Wednesday's Health Alert. Not sure what kind of candy you are passing out this Halloween, but this report found a word of caution about licorice this time of year. Local 12 has details from the Cleveland Clinic where researchers found those who especially like black licorice, two ounces a day for two weeks is enough to raise the risk of an irregular heartbeat. Black licorice contains a compound that comes from the licorice root. It may lower potassium levels which can impact heart rhythm. It's also possible that a second compound in black licorice called glycyrrhizin, it's a sweetening compound in licorice, it too may alter heart rhythm and blood pressure which could make a difference for those with heart concerns. Now if you eat it once in awhile, or prefer kit-kats or chocolate, no problem. Other than we probably eat too much of these this time of year.

Make your own homemade red Twizzlers! These tasted remarkably like the store bought candy, but had a completely different texture. Candy making playlist: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLQhvHiBS6HlF8Z7ps3Vcf4Ui3BarvhaiP 1/3 cup unsalted butter 3/4 cup sugar 1/2 cup corn syrup 1/3 cup sweetened condensed milk Pinch of salt (I didn't add any as I used salted butter in mine) 1/2 cup plus 2 tbsp all purpose flour Cherry flavoured candy oil (I used 10-15 drops) 1 tsp red food colouring (liquid) or a few drops of paste food colour. Butter a 9 inch square baking pan (I used and 8x8" and it was fine) Line with parchment paper, allowing pieces to hang over the edges of the pan. Grease the parchment. Combine the butter, sugar, syrup, sweetened condensed milk and salt (if using) in a medium sized saucepan over medium heat. Cook until the butter has melted and sugar is dissolved. Continue to cook until the mixture reaches 250 to 255F. Reduce the heat to medium low if you find the bottom burning. You have to stir this pretty much continuously. The colour will darken as the mixture caramelizes, but I think this is normal. Once you reach the proper temperature, remove it from the heat and stir in the flour, colour and flavouring oil. Pour into prepared pan and allow to cool for about 30 minutes. Allow to cool until you can handle it without burning your hands and so that it is fairly set. Set enough so that when you cut it with a knife it stays in a rope shape. Slice into 1/4" slices and twist. Cut into desired lengths. ***to make black licorice follow the same instructions, but reduce the corn syrup to 1/3 cup and add 2 tbsp of molasses. Use anise oil instead of cherry and add black food colouring instead of red. BE SURE TO PUT YOUR POT/SPOONS IN A SINK FULL OF HOT WATER and the candy will just melt off after a bit. This recipe found in the LCBO magazine called "FOOD & DRINK HOLIDAY 2014" Store in an airtight container at room temperature. This is a nice blend of flavors, combining mild black licorice with buttery caramel. After testing several home-made licorice recipes, we decided this was the one we liked most. Here is what you will need: 1 Cup Butter 2 Cups Granulated Sugar 1 Cup Light Corn Syrup 14 Ounce Can Sweetened Condensed Milk 1 or 2 Teaspoons Anise Extract (we used 1, this is the licorice flavor) 1/2 Teaspoon Black Food Coloring Pinch Salt Start out by melting the butter over medium heat. Once melted, add the condensed milk, sugar and corn syrup. Heat mixture to 245F, stirring frequently to constantly so it does not burn. Once at the desired temperature, remove from the heat, then add your anise extract and food coloring, stir to blend. Transfer the candy to a 9" x 9" pan lined with foil and sprayed with a light coat of cooking oil. Allow to cool and set overnight before cutting into single serving sized pieces. Wrap individually and store in refrigerator.
