The Fimiston Open Pit, colloquially known as the Super Pit, is Australia's largest open cut gold mine. The Super Pit is located off the Goldfields Highway on the south-east edge of Kalgoorlie, Western Australia. The pit is oblong in shape and is approximately 3.5 kilometres long, 1.5 kilometres wide and 570 metres deep. At these dimensions, it is large enough to be seen from space.
The Super Pit is owned by Kalgoorlie Consolidated Gold Mines Pty Ltd, a company owned 50/50 by Barrick Gold Corporation and Newmont Mining Corporation. The mine produces 850,000 ounces (28 tonnes) of gold per year, and employs around 550 employees directly on site.
Originally consisting of a number of small underground mines, consolidation into a single open pit mine was attempted by Alan Bond, but he was unable to complete the takeover. The Super Pit was eventually created in 1989 by Kalgoorlie Consolidated Gold Mines Pty Ltd.
Barrick Gold acquired its share of the mine in December 2001, when it took over Homestake Mining Company . Newmont became part-owner of the mine three months later, when it acquired Normandy Mining in February 2002.

OZ trip around Australia the day after i got bogged in the Land Cruiser camper i visit this disused open cut gold mine, 'Enterprise pit' in Pine Creek, 226 km's south of Darwin Northern Territory. Over 1 billion dollars of gold was extracted out of this mine from 1906 - 1994 from small mining leases, attracted lots of Chinese that had to dig mostly by hand. SMALL IN COMPARISON TO THE SUPER PIT IN KALGOORLIE WA WHICH PRODUCES MORE THAN THIS AMOUNT OF GOLD EVERY YEAR... The Enterprise Pit began life as the Enterprise Shaft in 1906. It was converted to an open cut mine in 1985 and over a ten year period yielded 764,000 ounces of gold (23,760.4 kg). It is now filled with water and, at its deepest point, is 135 metres deep. The lookout is located at the south-western end of Moule Street. - See...
I used to drive a huge dump truck in an opencut gold mine here in Australia, and wanted to capture what this was like. Its a brilliant job, very well paid, and most of the day you are sat listening to your music in an air-conditioned cab! I filmed a couple of complete runs down into the pit, and have included them at the end of the video, speeded up to 25 times actual speed - looks good. If you weren't aware, the steps to accessing the City of Gold are: I. Find the Udjat Eye by carrying the Big Key to the Golden Lock Chest. The Key and Chest will always spawn together on some level in The Mines (meaning you'll never have to carry it between levels to unlock the Chest), and usually/always on the second, third, or fourth level of that area. If they end up being on a special level, the Key and/or Chest is often found in the actual pit of Snake Pit ("I hate snakes!") levels / guarded by the four Giant Spiders in Crawling Skin levels. Good luck! II. Find the entrance to the Black Market. The entrance is always hidden in terrain in the first, second, or third level in The Jungle. Kind of like a metal detector, the Udjat Eye blinks and make sounds corresponding to your distance...

Ancient mining techniques go well back into our history – well back into ourprehistory, in fact. As we progressed through the Stone Age, with more and more sophisticated tools and weapons being designed and developed, so too,our need for more and better raw materials for these implements. Stone and flint led to copper, then bronze, gold, silver, iron… all in the name of progress, war, technology, vanity or greed. In fact, it’s ironic (pun intended) that the substance prized and even mined by our ancient ancestors for some of the earliest stone tools and weapons – flint – was later a hindrance encountered by Classical miners – who were in many cases also Classical minors – in gold mining galleries described by Pliny the Elder in the 1st century AD as “thought to be the hardest thing that ex...

Central Washington University geology professor Nick Zentner presents “Yellowstone Hot Spot & Liberty Gold: Is There a Connection?”. An old oceanic terrane, Siletzia, is the key to the lecture. The Yellowstone Hot Spot created Siletzia offshore 55 million years ago, and its accretion to the Pacific Northwest crust set the stage for gold deposition in Liberty, Washington. Includes a visit to Rob Repin’s placer gold mine in Liberty, Washington. 280 folks attended this lecture at the Hal Holmes Center in downtown, Ellensburg, Washington. February 17, 2016.
Gold Mining | The Hunt for Mankind's Most Precious Metal | World Documentary Films It is impossible to know the exact date that humans first began to mine gold, but some of the oldest known gold artifacts were found in the Varna Necropolis in Bulgaria. The graves of the necropolis were built between 4700 and 4200 BC, indicating that gold mining could be at least 7000 years old.[1] A group of German and Georgian archaeologists claims the Sakdrisi site in southern Georgia, dating to the 3rd or 4th millennium BC, may be the world's oldest known gold mine.[2] Bronze age gold objects are plentiful, especially in Ireland and Spain, and there are several well known possible sources. Romans used hydraulic mining methods, such as hushing and ground sluicing on a large scale to extract gold from e...

I've been searching
I've been searching
I've been searching for a gold mine
To open up the skies and make me feel alive
Been searching for a gold mine
A gold mine
Well I've got trouble sleeping in
And when I feel the day begin to change my mood
It's been feeling kinda dull, and I been waiting for a call to answer to
I have to be honest
I wouldn't know what's true
So won't you take me up with you 'cause
I've been searching for a gold mine
To open up the skies and make me feel alive
I've been searching for a gold mine
A gold mine
Well I've been traveling high and low
I'm searching for that glow before it strays
I only got one life to give
Only have so long to live
Won't throw this away
I have to be honest,
I wouldn't know what's true
So won't you take me up with you 'cause
I've been searching for a gold mine
To open up the skies and make me feel alive
I've been searching for a gold mine
A gold mine
